Eternally damned techno-priest heretic, curly brace balancer, and pesky citation requester.
When someone tells me we need to replace unpleasant American surveillance tech with the exact same thing but open source and hosted in a data centre in Brussels.
My heart swells with pride when we can get the drone murder decider running on a GPU in a Welsh AI growth zone with a picture of the Queen Mother on the side. It’s very important that human rights are undermined by your own government rather than a foreign corporation, after all. #SovereignTech
Agentic AI has "guardrails" (e.g. you have to explicitly say "don't delete all the files on my computer" if you don't want it to delete all your files).
One of these guardrails is asking users to confirm whether to do things. Claude Code apparently has now decided that if you take over sixty seconds to answer a question, it'll just go ahead.
Turns out guardrails get in the way of consuming tokens, and you must consume tokens in order for the business model to work.
I've spoken to people working at major tech companies who've written little scripts that fire off some queries every day specifically so they can say they're using the stupid AI system.
"Here, god of matrix arithmetic, enjoy my burnt token offerings."
Oh no, someone might post “homosexual pornography” on the fediverse. And someone who definitely isn’t homophobic will cry about it.
Every so often, someone writes an essay about how AI is inherently fascist and the standard reaction is "sure, interesting, but perhaps a little much".
Meanwhile corporations are now using algorithms to mask the accents of ESL speakers at call centres because god forbid someone hear an accent that's different from their own.

Think Robin Hood, except everyone wakes up to find 16GB of DDR5-6000 on their doorstep.
Also ChatGPT and Claude are mysteriously offline, causing the most deranged LinkedIn posts from the absolute worst people on the planet.
If UK politics doesn’t work out, Farage has shown the kind of skills necessary to run FIFA.
I need to reformat the indentation and spacing of an XML file.
-
xmllint --format my_file.xml -
Pay lots of money to upload it to a third party service which may or may not reliably do it, and hope they don't use the contents of the file in a way you don't like.
I'm apparently the strange one because I think (1) is a good solution.
Tech fascists are the sort of people who will recognise the humanity of, and grant rights to, an AI language model before they do the same for women, LGBTQ people, or racial and ethnic minorities.
Every time I see a Labour Party advert on Facebook trying to tell me that the Greens are bad because of their drugs policy, it re-emphasises that the UK really needs to replace the failed war on drugs with literally anything else. e.g. a combo of American-style legalisation of softer drugs (with tax revenue from legal sale), and Portugal-style public health diversion for harder drugs—both are huge improvements on the status quo.
Not that who runs the local council has any effect on drug policy.
Based on every conversation I’ve had with academics about what teaching is currently like for them, I feel I should add “(no AI used)” after each entry in the education section of my CV.
Fair play to Pizza Express for doing a more diligent inquiry into Prince Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein than many other organisations and institutions.
It’d be fascinating to imagine a liberal commentariat that was as forgiving to a 19-year-old student activist being cringe at a Free Palestine rally as they are to Peter Thiel or Steve Bannon. The latter invite you to hang out though.
While other people I know have really embraced Jujutsu, for me I've got enough of Git burned into my brain as to change the cost-benefit analysis of learning JJ.
But LightJJ is a really superb UI (similar to the macOS GitUp UI), and makes the benefits JJ brings over Git clear, e.g. visually moving (and splitting/rebasing) changes between parents is quite intuitive.
According to BBC News, 80% of culture news is Taylor Swift.
