We are thrilled with the renewed attention that The Carpentries has received for deciding to withdraw a $1.5 million proposal to the National Science Foundation (NSF), thanks to a recent similar decision made by the Python Software Foundation (@ThePSF@fosstodon.org) and the shout-out they gave us when they announced it.

PSF raised $65K+ within 24 hours of making their announcement, an amount which rose to $135K+ within a week in solidarity funds from 1400+ donors and 270+ new members. This is incredible financial support to PSF from the Python community!

The Carpentries has an open appeal to our community and the general public for donations and sponsorships to help us make up the shortfall in funds due to our proposal withdrawal. We are deeply grateful for the encouragement and solidarity we received in response. We value all contributions!

Our choice came with financial challenges. In the context of our operating budget ($1.2 million in 2024), $1.5 million is a significant amount of money. The loss of those anticipated NSF funds, therefore, represents a substantial impact on our sustainability.

With this renewed attention to values-based decision making, we would like to use this opportunity to highlight The Carpentries' continued need for financial support. We hope that Python community members and like-minded organisations will also support the work of The Carpentries in some way.

The support the Python community has shown to PSF for its decision has given us hope in the sustainability of open science communities. Please consider extending your generosity to our organisation’s fundraising efforts, and help us to reach more individuals that are aligned to our mission and values: https://carpentries.org/support/

We are grateful to the individuals and organisations who provide financial support to The Carpentries. If you are interested in supporting our work, you can learn more about becoming a Partner Organisation or donor. Your contributions help us create positive change in the data and software communities. Just as important as financial contributions is the support that individuals and organisations give to The Carpentries by getting involved in a wide range of activities and volunteer roles.

📢 Today and tomorrow, 21-22 July 2026, our Director of Curriculum, Dr Toby Hodges, is participating virtually at the Library of Congress AI Literacy + Learning for Libraries, Archives, and Museums (LAMs) Summit. He will give a brief overview of current activities and suggestions for how summit participants can get involved in the AI Carpentry project. 🌟

The gathering, in Washington, DC and virtually, brings together leaders and stakeholders working at the intersection of responsible AI and libraries, archives and museums. The goal is to work toward developing resources that support the responsible implementation of AI across knowledge institutions that prioritise trust, authenticity, and the public good--building on and connecting to existing efforts. 👏

🗓️ Over the two days participants will:
• Day 1 — Share work and outcomes from AI literacy and learning initiatives across the sector.
• Day 2 — Engage in structured activities to develop shared resources and guides.

After the event, the summit organisers will summarise the key outcomes and share the resources publicly.

📢 We have some BIG and EXCITING news! On 5 February 2026 our Board of Directors voted unanimously to approve the adoption of @hpccarpentry@hachyderm.io as an official lesson program of The Carpentries, launching on 1 September 2026! https://carpentries.org/blog/2026/02/adopting-hpc-carpentry/ 🚀

From that point, The Carpentries will have four official Lesson Programs: Data Carpentry, Library Carpentry, Software Carpentry, and HPC Carpentry! 🎉

HPC Carpentry teaches foundation skills for high performance computing, through inclusive, accessible, interactive workshops aimed at novices. This makes them a perfect fit with our mission to empower a diverse global community by equipping individuals with essential data and computational skills.

The HPC Carpentry project would not have made it to this pivotal moment without the efforts of many HPC Carpentry community members, past and present. The Carpentries and the Steering Committee of HPC Carpentry wish to thank everyone who has contributed to the project, hosted or taught a workshop, and engaged with the HPC Carpentry community up to now. Your support for the project is highly appreciated.

Read more about this project's journey so far, and find out about some ways that the Carpentries community can get involved, and the work ahead required to adopt a new Lesson Program: https://carpentries.org/blog/2026/02/adopting-hpc-carpentry/

Our impact starts with people. Behind every Carpentries workshop is a community of Instructor Trainers, Instructors, Maintainers, and many other contributors working together to build data and computational skills worldwide. 🌍

Instructor Trainers prepare new Instructors in evidence-based teaching practices. Those Instructors then teach workshops that reach hundreds of learners. That’s the multiplier effect at the heart of The Carpentries.

Earlier this week, our Director of Workshops and Training, SherAaron Hurt, delivered a lecture and workshop as part of the Ashton Speaker Series at the University of New Mexico Libraries, and we are so pleased by how well it went!

Titled "When Expertise Isn't Enough: How Connection and Belonging Sustain Learning", and relying on examples from volunteer-driven educational models, her talk reframed the notion of expertise by exploring how connection, encouragement, and psychological safety shape engagement and persistence in academic learning environments.

We are so grateful also to the Carpentries Instructors at UNM who joined the session! 💙

It's been a busy week away from the office for our Director of Curriculum Toby Hodges who attended the #deRSE26 conference at the University of Stuttgart!

He presented a talk on the developments around the AI Carpentry project, and also co-led two HPC Carpentry-related sessions.

Toby's talk, "Training to Protect Research Integrity in the Age of AI-assisted Coding," explored some of the open questions surrounding the use of LLMs for coding in research, including: what role should RSEs take in an environment where it has never been easier for researchers to produce code? https://events.hifis.net/event/2945/contributions/21155/

The talk was very well attended and received lots of really positive feedback afterwards about the direction the AI Carpentry project is headed, giving us confidence that we are on the right track. Thanks everyone for your contributions to the project so far!

And thank you, Toby, for all that you do for The Carpentries and our curricula! 🙏💙

At the beginning of last year, we announced that The Carpentries would sunset support for our previous lesson infrastructure, 𝘴𝘵𝘺𝘭𝘦𝘴, at the end of last year.

Over the last twelve months, lesson developers either transitioned their repositories to The Carpentries Workbench or requested that the Curriculum Team make the transition for them. Recently, the Curriculum Team has been archiving repositories that had not migrated to the Workbench.

Our latest blog post reports and reflects on the progress made during this migration process: https://carpentries.org/blog/2026/02/end-of-support-for-styles/

Thank you to everyone who helped make this process a success, to the developers and Maintainers of the 𝘴𝘵𝘺𝘭𝘦𝘴 infrastructure that this community built so many fantastic lessons with over the years, and to the developers and contributors to the Workbench who are carrying this work into the future! 🙏

👏 Hearty congratulations to our subcommunity in New Zealand/Aotearoa for organising and hosting a successful CarpentryConnect event earlier this week! 🎉

The Carpentries' expansion and stability of its communities in different regions of the world are made possible by the self-directed activities of subcommunity members in those regions. We are extremely excited and proud, therefore, to have had another successful, subcommunity-organised regional #CarpentryConnect event!

We are also so pleased our Executive Director @drkariljordan@mastodon.social was able to attend and deliver a keynote! And we also wish to extend thanks to all the attendees and guest speakers, including Tom Pollard, Christopher Endemann, Iva Momcheva, Olga Mineava and Giulia Crocioni.
