They made the moose go through the locks like a boat, lowering each section! https://www.cbc.ca/player/play/video/9.7357588?utm_source=flipboard&utm_medium=activitypub

Moose becomes trapped in Rideau Canal in Merrickville

Residents of Merrickville found a moose stuck in the Rideau Canal locks on Thursday morning. Rescuers eventually lowered the water level and helped the animal move to the relative safety of the Rideau River. The CBC’s Stu Mills reports.

#doggust day 29: Black Russian Terrier This one got a bit Disney-ified in the face because I was looking at the 101 dalmatians stuff in the hobinichi store 😅 Also, tried using fountain pens like watercolour pencils and oh that's fun. The ink utterly melts into the page with very little water; it was actually hard to get the messy stripe look I wanted for the background! And the bandana is also painted from pen lines but they're pretty much gone (same pen used for the label). Inks are both Wonder Pens exclusives from Dominant Industries. Tuna and Olives is the green, Ginger Chicken the orange. #dog #fountainpens #dogsofmastodon #painting #WonderPens

For the #FediCraftClub crowd: Cat and Dog Socks are grafted! I like how the pattern has appropriately different paw prints for each underside. And I'm entertained that the best light I can reach is by my dog's toes at the moment. #knitting #cat #dog

Spent some time doing painting exercises from a library book and I'm pretty happy with how this iris turned out! #iris #watercolour #bloomscrolling

Swatch Wednesday: Diamine Red Dragon https://curiousity.ca/2026/swatch-wednesday-diamine-red-dragon/ This is the second ink out of a set of three I bought to celebrate finishing a longer piece of fiction writing,  This is the colour of the three that I really wanted.  I love red inks, probably a bit of a holdover when I did more editing and marking by hand.  When I was … Continue reading → #FountainPens #InkSwatch #SwatchWednesday

I really love this description of a retracted study: not only does it explain what was retracted (turns out men don't generally divorce their sick wives), but also it covers what the error was (a coding problem treated people who left the study as divorced) how it all went down (someone tried to replicate, asked for data and didn't get the same analysis. Contacted the authors and they were horrified and immediately worked to retract).

It's a really nice story of why replication matters and how to be good at science. This is how I was taught science should work, but I rarely come across such good retrospectives.

“To our horror”: Widely reported study suggesting divorce is more likely when wives fall ill gets axed

A widely reported finding that the risk of divorce increases when wives fall ill — but not when men do — is invalid, thanks to a short string of mistaken coding that negates the origina…

Not sure I'm going to be doing an actually daily #DailyDaffofil this year because there aren't as many near my new house, but here's a gnarly one by the bus stop.

Swatch Wednesday: Teranishi Guitar Brilliant Mint https://curiousity.ca/2026/swatch-wednesday-teranishi-guitar-brilliant-mint/ It’s gotten warm enough that I didn’t have to worry about ink freezing in the mail! My first impression looking in the box was “oh no there’s something on the lid” because normally I put a label on top with the colour to make it easier to find the ink I want in my drawer. … Continue reading →

Has anyone here heard anything about GiveHero? Work's using it for a fitness challenge thing and while I'm ok with handing out a week of fitness data for some fun community building nonsense with my new coworkers I'd rather not find out the app is a front for some military-industrial complex spyware or something.

@eisfunke@inductive.space this is so neat! I keep thinking I should make myself a cover that suits me better but the idea of figuring out all those measurements is daunting!

@kerravonsen @ansate @knitting adding to this: I also use removable stitch markers for:

  1. Marking rows to make it easier to count either for doing repeats or things like sweaters where I might need to do 20 rows and it's much faster to see when I'm done if I mark them off in 5s or something. Also good for repeated charts to make checking progress faster.

  2. Grabbing a dropped stitch or marking a mistake so I can fix it when I get back around to that part of the knitting. Very helpful for mistakes where you need to drop back a bunch and reknit.

  3. Marking off a larger cast or place where my repeats change I forgot to use the other type of stitch marker on the previous row. Turns out I really hate counting some days.

  4. Holding up my pants hem when I inevitably rip it out after 5 years and don't want it to get caught on my bike on the way home. 😂
