England Vs Argentina last night was busy! Easily the busiest ever live event on the BBC (I can't give you streaming stats, sorry).
On my logging pipeline (subset of BBC logs):
- Peak: 2.2M row/s (105GB/s)
- Total: 20.1B rows (16.4TB), 2.7M log files
- 0 write fails
- 0 duplicated rows
- Peak: 1035 Cloud Run containers @ 2x CPU each ∴ 2070 CPU
Best bit is that we did precisely nothing, it all just worked.
If this turns out to be meaningful rain, it'd be *very* welcome.
We've had zero significant rain here since March - so ~5 months. For much of that time it's been 30-35℃.
75% of England and all of Wales is in drought currently.
In south oxfordshire we've had a hosepipe band for quite a while now.
Anyone who isn't convinced about climate change needs to stop smoking whatever they're smoking and look outside.
We've officially f**ked up as a species.
Amount of AI I use at work: 0
Amount I am falling behind my peers: Also 0
Maybe AI is a thing for some people but not for me.
I've had to deploy a spare laptop for my cat to sleep on.
He was on my work laptop and managed to turn it off whilst I was mid-work.
RE: @depthsofwiktionary@wikis.world
This just reminded me of a call I was on recently when a colleague warned others not to do $thing in case they get "porned".
The English FA in 2026, everyone.
You know, a mere 61 years after metrication.
Feet and inches are literally the stupidest measurement system. Why would anyone use that when metric measurements exist and are the default for your country?
FFS. Football is run by morons.
Opposition to Infantino's grift is building.
Three of the six continental governing bodies for football have rejected it:
- UEFA (Europe)
- CONCACAF (North, Central & South America)
- AFC (Asia)
UEFA (backed by the English FA) will boycott FIFA tournaments and now Carlos Cordeiro - senior adviser to Infantino has resigned.
Infantino is now trying to weasel out of it, saying it's been confused by the Media reporting and he really was going to talk to people. Prick.
We're recruiting for a new Security Architect role in BBC InfoSec:
Location: Remote (within UK) Salary range: £75-85k + solid pension & benefits Type: Permanent Closing date: 2026-02-16
"The BBC reaches over half a billion people online every week. By joining this team you will help keep these systems secure. You’ll regularly collaborate with critical BBC product teams such as iPlayer, Sounds and News..."
It's a great team to work with (I do regularly)

FFS. Literally the only thing I even marginally like LLMs for (Pull Request reviews, because it's a total pedant) now seems shonky.
Just in case you thought Infantino's plan somehow wasn't a grift:
Infantino has written to all 211 member associations saying they will receive $40m (£30m) if they back his controversial plan to sell off stakes in its major competitions
Sweet! Orban is in the bin.
Let's keep this rolling everywhere.

Long shot...does anyone know any details about AS213802 - "tianfeng (hong kong) communications limited" AKA TFTel?
We saw what looks like a crawler make a chunk of requests from IP addresses geoip'd in China (which may be inaccurate) so I checked them out...
- HTTP only website
- Made up or massively out of date map location
- Text looks very generic (could be a poor machine translation though)
All in all, they look a bit fishy. I suspect this is traffic from their customer though.
TCP RTT for a BBC telemetry service by country from end user/client to closest CDN [1] PoP.
Larger, redder circles are slower/worse.
This neatly illustrates the global web performance divide.
TCP: Transmission Control Protocol
RTT: Round Trip Time
PoP: Point of Presence
[1] I can't name the CDN, sorry, corp/competition rules.
The investment fund Fifa is dealing with - Thrive Capital - is led by Josh Kushner, the brother-in-law of Trump's daughter Ivanka.
[Infantino] created a Peace Prize and awarded it to Trump. He opened a Fifa office in Trump Tower, New York. He allowed the Club World Cup trophy to be kept in the Oval Office at the White House. He laughed along during Trump's inauguration speech in which he threatened World Cup co-hosts Canada and Mexico.
Grift all the way down.
Microsoft/GitHub should offer an easy way for enterprise orgs to fund packages/maintainers. How about something like:
Enterprise orgs allocate whatever monthly/annual amount they choose & GitHub uses the package manifest files to divide that amount up based on the org pref - e.g. % based on usage or even split or a custom setup - maybe with exclusions.
Feels like a major reason orgs don't fund maintainers is it's too fiddly & time-consuming & needs contracts.

The kid is 6 years old. Imagine the pollution they've created.
"...two malicious versions of the widely used axios HTTP client library published to npm: axios@1.14.1 and axios@0.30.4...[which installs] a `postinstall` script that acts as a cross platform remote access trojan (RAT) dropper, targeting macOS, Windows, and Linux"
My `package.json` files across 4 projects:
```
"axios": "1.14.0"
I just found 4x responses in our server logs which have a `content-type` of `image/html`.
Even better, turns out they're `301` redirects.
Google Cloud Storage now has a batch operations API.
I've not used it but you basically feed it bucket name(s) and prefix(es) or object names and the operation to run and it'll go away and do it for you - apparently across "billions of objects". Super handy for e.g. adjusting permissions/metadata/compression across an existing collection.
There's Terraform support: https://registry.terraform.io/providers/hashicorp/google/latest/docs/resources/storage_batch_operations_job
https://docs.cloud.google.com/storage/docs/batch-operations/overview
It's 2026 and people are still emailing word doc attachments around groups for joint input.
Hidden Agenda: Is it love?
Super chilled D&B track from the mid 90's (on one of my "for work" playlists).
Warning: YouTube Music (because I never found anything with better privacy that has the content)
