An interesting thing is happening in my orbit. Several enthusiastic AI early adopters (who's past works I respect) are starting to publish think pieces about 'how to get the best out of AI' . One is about how to stop AI cheating at tests, another about how to get repeatable results, a third about how we aren't thinking about AI right and finally one about how dull AI text is to read. So I think these folks have started to put their enthusiasm aside and started to see the inherent problems.

Corners of the internet are still strangely wonderful.

Late last night I joined @susankayequinn@wandering.shop 's "solar punk book club" meeting and had a lovely time discussing "The Ministry Of The Future" with a range of folks from around the world.

I'd seen that it was happening here on the fediverse and decided to read the book and join.

To cap it, we used jitsi.org - written in part by my friend @s@fedi.saghul.net .

None of this would have been possible 15 years ago.

@Maker_of_Things@cupoftea.social I am going to guess that modern encryption in https would make that almost impossible. I did a thought experiment of building a clock that decoded and displayed a time signal in 80s era TTL (no microprocessor) and it was hard. Your best bet might be to implement a minimal RISC in valves, then use a clang backend to compile modern stuff to it. But even then you would need a lot of valves for storage.

@joomy@functional.cafe I remember explaining this to a VAT inspector who was checking the books for our software company. Once I'd explained that we had exported an SNMP stack to a customer in Boston over the internet I then had to explain that it was open source software. In the end we agreed that we had done consultancy and that no actual goods were involved. It was a long afternoon.

10 years ago, I bought a second hand ev. It was 4 years old and had massively depreciated. I planned to use it as a runabout, for trips to the airport, shops etc for a year or two until the battery gave out.

Yesterday 3 of us did a comfortable air conditioned 35 mile trip in it, parked it on a charger, did our errands, had lunch and tootled back an additional 35 motorway miles.

The range is 20% down on what it was when I got it, but still useful.

One of my best investments :-)

I have a 'smart' power socket which switches a single thing on and off once a day.

I set it up by pairing it to a temporary wifi access point that _isn't_ shared with anything else (partly because I don't trust it and partly because it sits on the very edge of wifi).

Every now and then it forgets what it is doing and switches on at a 'random' time.

I suspect it is sulking because it can't talk to the mothership (or NTP?).

Anyone else experienced this ?

@AimeeMaroux @stuartyeates It probably isn't enough, but there are vague plans for live video feeds to ops centres, (like CCTV) of both internal and external views. In Europe it looks like the ops centre staff have to be qualified bus drivers, which makes a sort of sense. The question then becomes 'what is the remote bus driver going to do?' - and that's even more vague and troubling.

@kerfuffle @moreentropy Last time I did a full waterfall project it was for ESA (30 years ago) - we were launching the thing with no opportunity to update the inflight stuff and a very short lifespan of the mission (limited by cryogenics). Accompanied by inflexible budgetary politics. Waterfall made a lot of sense at that point. Oh and did I mention that the launch window was determined by planetary locations? All the _hard_ constraints.

@darnell@one.darnell.one @randomwalker@mastodon.social I think you both might be missing the fact that the other folks on your server act as moderators for your local and federated feeds. So if you join the right instance, 'local' becomes a human curated equivalent of the algorithmic feed. That starts to break if everyone just uses the AI.

@tomayac @moopet It's not the model I'm worried about. Having a Claude written bit of software auto updating on my dev machine is a supply chain attack vector I don't need at the moment. I.e. I'm not installing any auto updating open source that has Claude as a major contributor onto my dev machine, whatever it is supposed to do.

@itnomad @yadt It trusts your device (somewhat) - but that is a design choice - trusting the device in your hand more than the distant server managed by someone else. It also specifically says that the PIN stuff is the area it expects actual providers to customise and improve when they take the white label demo app and productise it.

There is an absolute storm of weird RFC proposals coming out of the AI 'community'. They all relate to finding, validating, linking and paying AI agents. None of them make any sense to me or (as far as I can tell) the (other?) greybeards. I guess the IETF is seeing the effect of lowering the cost of writing plausible drivel. Some of it might be useful, but it is so, so hard to tell.

@kerfuffle @moreentropy The general direction of the concerns were right, but the _detail_ of emerging best practice is new (at least to me) and not what I would have guessed. For example, to paraphrase one of the commentators, we are seeing a return to the specification as the key to a software project. I did not expect AI to revive the waterfall project dev method ;-) ( to be fair my friend strenuously objects to that characterisation!)

@lightspeed @EUCommission @raccoon Yup. But as I said later in the thread , some of the newer cryptography can be used to significantly reduce that risk. That cryptography runs on your device, which also reduces the risks of mass surveillance somewhat. The minimum (IMHO) is to get that risk to be significantly lower than the risk that the website is hacked and your visit is made public that way.
