I've been largely Unplugged™️ from the internet for the last few months and I gotta say, the stuff I do see about AI and software engineering is fucking bleak. I can't help but think about the tools and impact we could build with 1/10th the investment, hype, and attention. When I think about returning to work eventually and opening up my editor, I feel sad that I'm going to have to work around AI throughout the entire process, instead of just building something with other people. There has been enormous joy for me in engineering, and AI is antithetical to that for me. LLMs absolutely have their uses, but the pervasive and inescapable way it's been shoved onto every aspect of software engineering is just dreadful to me. I used to look forward to seeing a pull request on my projects, now I dread it. Even people I work with that I trust to use AI in a sensible way are affected- I see their work and know AI was involved and it kills a bit of my enthusiasm for engaging. I'm not condemning them and I'm glad they found some use in it, but it still takes a bit of wind out of my sails.

Honestly the best thing about intensive mental health treatment is that there are 10 hours in each day where the internet can not reach me. Gonna have to start unplugging the router religiously when this is over.

Please wake me if you find me daydreaming
In your fields of gentle pale-gold freckles
Pull me to shore should you catch me swimming
In the waves of your cornflower-blue eyes

Blind my vision if you find me sneaking
Longing glances at your witty smile
Give me direction if I'm wandering
Lost within your resonant melodies

Expel my ghost if I begin haunting
Your attic, power sockets, and floorboards
Forgive my lonely little heart's pining
For one so wonderful and frightening

And know that I am content to nestle
On the warm steps just outside the threshold
A stray tattered tabby taking shelter
Never daring to dart through the open door

Between depression, heartache, and the state of the world, it's hard for me to be "visible" today. It means a lot to see so many others speak out and be visible.

So, I'm still here, still visible.

Every day
I hear the incessant,
Annoying buzz
Of tiny engines
Rearranging the leaves

And yet
My gentle, quiet
Wildflowers
Have grown too tall
To be tolerated

The software I'm working on runs on a RaspberryPi and serves a webapp. But, it's experimental and things can break so I built a little "rescue" web-app that lets you view status, logs, and restart the service or reboot the machine. 😎

<100 lines of python, love it.

A programmer saying "If I don't use AI tools, I'll be left behind" is like trying to outrun a steamroller by preemptively flattening your feet.

RE: @Edent@mastodon.social

Wholehearted agree. If it's gonna be revolutionary, I don't need to be an early adopter.

Inspired by @josefprusa@mas.to 's new license "for the maker community", OCL, I'm introducing it's long-awaited sequel, SOCL!

Like Hollow Knight Silksong, it promises to be an improvement over its prequel in every way.

Looking forward to community adoption and feedback!

Wow, I just saw a video that segued into an ad read with "we don't think AI should ever replace human creativity" and then proceeded to earnestly read an ad for an AI subscription service. 💀

@alpenglow@mstdn.social you might wanna open a bug on the kicad-libraries repo, a lot of those are generated via a script and it might be possible to fix that for a large number of them relatively easily!

That's because web devs have different expectations. They *expect* to work with a packaging tool. They expect to find and install dependencies. They don't expect to work with a ton of native dependencies. They don't have the same problems. This only scratches the surface of the technical complexity here. The reason there are so many tools for managing Python dependencies is because Python is not a monoculture and different folks need different things.

You gotta deal with the users and the stans. Wanna know why I stopped working on Python packaging? I got harassed for *months* because KR picked a fight with Reddit right when I dared to include pipenv on http://packaging.python.org Fuck that.

Fundamentally these users do not want to think about this shit, and they're a *huge* group of users. You know who does think about this shit? Web developers, and every time someone comes along with "Python packaging sucks and someone should fix it" they're a web dev.

Precompilation is *hard*, especially for high-performance libraries. You can't just distribute a build will all the fancy vector extensions enabled cause someone on a different processor won't be able to use it. You wanna see a nightmare? Look at TensorFlow.

The packages they use, however, are complex fucking monsters. They're a mix of C, C++, FORTAN, Haskell, Julia, and god knows what else. They don't want to waste time installing build tools and compiling these things. Their packages need to be precompiled and ready to go.

Some don't even know they're using Python! Here's some examples: Python's in the Linux Standard Base and bunch of critical Linux stuff is written in Python. Distros gotta package those & their deps into their package database (deb/rpm). Most distros want nothing to do with the language-specific package manager. They want to manage everything though rpm/deb/portage/whatever and they don't want you fucking around with system packages. Ever got burned by Python included with macOS? Yeah, same deal

So OS vendors want Python to be invisible to the user. They want it for system purposes, and they want to distribute python apps, scripts, and packages on their own terms. Cool. Let's pick another group: academics and researchers. They want to do their research. They don't want to program Python. They want to work their data, create visualizations, and very importantly: they want fellow researchers to be able to use their code. These folks don't really want to think about packaging.

You gotta convince a bunch of unpaid volunteers maintaining existing tools to give up their projects for your solution. Projects they built from the ground up for their own use case. You gotta write several PEPs and get them accepted.

You gotta deal with the politics: The PyPA which is completely volunteer and has all the responsibility of maintaining existing tools and practically no real authority or resources. They aren't a unified body, more of a loose collection of people that chat sometimes.

But let's assume for a moment that you can overcome those technical challenges. You can create a tool and workflow that works for the vast majority. Now you have to deal with people. You gotta convince a bunch of unpaid volunteers that you're right and that they should help.

You gotta deal with the Python Core team and the steering council. They have consistently abdicated the details of packaging to the community. They aren't, at this time, very interesting in taking over packaging and telling the community how to manage their dependencies.
