Except when I can't stand AI, and then I have the Libre Office project to perfectly align with. Or, when I'm working on a red team or counterstrike engagement and it would be stupid to deprive myself of tools that my adversaries will use freely. Then I guess I have Mozilla to align with. So that's a clear yes, one way or another, every day of the week.

@evan@cosocial.ca There are loads of scenarios in which you absolutely have no choice but to contact someone who does not want to hear from you. Let's start with the basics: sometime people in families fall out, and someone decides to become estranged. OK, fine. But what do you do when someone dies, and you know they won't have any way of knowing?

@evan@cosocial.ca And so on and so forth. So for me it's yes, but only if you have no other choice.

@evan@cosocial.ca Then, what if you have an apartment, and agree to let a contact use it, paid or not when you are away. You come home to find the place trashed, and things are missing, and your contact has blocked you. You have no choice but to try to sort it out. So if you don't try to start with a dialogue you jump directly to a subpoena, which is still a kind of contact.

@Michigander@toad.social Swiss here. I miss snow. Until recently we would have two months of snow at our elevation every year. Now we have to go to the Mountains. Even there it's not the same as it was.

I think people get too hung up on Fedi-etiquitte, and forget that social media exists in a world where you have to contact people who would rather not hear from you, pretty much all the time.

@maj Fedi: as close to zero as I can make it. Facebook: I'm a bit careful, but I'll engage those who are horribly misguided. Local newspaper comments section: if I don't draw blood it's a wasted day.

To block or not to block, in a nutshell. When you get there you discover, say, four or five subtoots about your friend, as well as some pointless piling on about various people who, while really cool, have annoyed the internet recently.

@evan We dealt with a colleague a few years ago who did this repeatedly. But there were other issues which made approaching the colleague directly difficult or impossible. But then, I wonder, what is your definition of a work call these days? If part of your job is attending or hosting (un)conferences, do you now think of those as work calls? I think that might have an impact on my own thinking if I were in the same spot.

@evan@cosocial.ca I'm firmly in the yes camp, but I find myself trying to explain what linked-data is and why you should use it a couple of times per week. Usually it happens when I'm configuring a SAML integration, and the vendor doesn't understand why attribute names are expressed as URIs. So I find myself trying to explain RDF and how this became linked-data. Then the vendor just dictates that we send role data in a plain-text attribute "Role".
