@0x00string@infosec.exchange @Niall@mastodon.nz @thomasbeagle@mastodon.nz Musk dated and had kids with a technoDJ after they got high and talked about artificial intelligence. That's basically 60% of the nerds I know. The problem was the belief that Nerds can't be Nazis.

@0x00string@infosec.exchange @Niall@mastodon.nz @thomasbeagle@mastodon.nz Listen - Grimes was different and that's important context. And I mean - someone can be a nerd without being interesting. I think it's important to own the shitty parts of our own social graph. Eric S Raymond is a hacker. Elon Musk is a nerd. That doesn't mean they're good - and we just need to own it. Nerd doesn't make you good. Being good makes you good!

@artemis@dice.camp I think there's value to thinking about how the US military is funded by talking about cool weapons and how you could kill people with your thing. There's a lot of money in tools to setup military equipment quickly on the field. There's no money on setting up a gym in a few hours. The US can easily replace weapons and defenses. It can't replace comforts and things that let people live.

@mayintoronto@beige.party also - I think Epistomological Collapse is a huge deal, losing our ability to engage with the concept of knowledge. But - I'll wait until @firefly_lightning finishes all dozen papers and three books and writes the essay she's working on to be rigerously mad about it.

@mayintoronto@beige.party @firefly_lightning Not only that! All facts are equally presented and sourced. You need an image of a migrant killing an ICE officer? Sure buddy! You need a source that vaccines cause autism? Got you! You need a source that sunburns are linked to skin cancer? Done! If we use these things to learn - we quickly will learn everything with equal depth, and we can build epistemological communities based on the fact lines we've walked and the LLMs we've used, and then eventually - our own personal reality which is corroborated by our own source documents. Sure - this is happening in general with the internet - but this is scaling it.

@mayintoronto@beige.party convenient.email/display/2c704… People ignore this effect. The small "open source" models are made from chopped up LLMs, and can't get updates without synthesizing their data.

My favourite parts of the internet are people doing "Hold my beer while I try this" style shit using incredibly rare and powerful skills.

Posting to the fediverse from a payphone, smashing a super nintendo with a brick until it's a handheld, building floral clocks. Just absolute peak skills being used for dumb shit. I love every second of the way the internet has pulled back the curtain of genius.

@izder456 I became an OpenBSD user because I wanted an OS that was boring and simple. I was frustrated in the middle of the night one night with a broken computer, and I installed OpenBSD like... 3 times in 15 minutes (used local files, didn't need to wait for the internet), and it made it so much simpler. It's boggling.

If you think Xorg/X11 is bad, fine. If you want to replace it you must offer a replacement that meets the basic needs of its users. Wayland is not that.

@tinker@infosec.exchange the fascinating thing here is that he's ignoring the technical merits to make a political statement. LLMs make bad code, but he's politicially aligned with them. It's silly, but, this is berzerk from every level. (Yes, LLMs are political, Linux is political, and the statement is dumb, but the other part is important)
