@DemocracyMattersALot@mstdn.social place and feature names on maps are usually the officially recognized names. Trump passed a law, as moronic as it is, and now we have a new name that these companies use. My map company does the same thing.
Not defending Trump, just explaining how maps are made.
245lb floor press. Not a PR, but I'm down ~10lbs in bodyweight.

Do you think that is a scalable solution for 99% of people?
Click a button to be 'reasonably' anonymous (for most people's needs at least), or whatever your solution.
Of course if you have an elevated risk profile, you need additional steps. IMO, if you're on the government radar, you shouldn't be using ANY tech/internet platforms.

So you believe it's either all or nothing?
Should everything we on the internet be completely public unless you have an arbitrary high level risk profile?

Your claims are an oversimplification. Proton has annual third party audits, which it passes. It also had to turn over logs but couldn't because they didn't exist, as verified by court documents.
I'm not saying VPNs are a magic bullet, and many of your arguments are very sound. I just dont agree with your whole premise.

The question is, do you trust private VPNs or your ISPs/telcoms more?
Hearing crypto nerds talk about how great "AI agents" will be to their already ridiculous ecosystem, and then reading that this dude convinced a bot to send him 200k is just *chef's kiss*

You're arguing just to argue. Re-read what I posted. That's exactly what I said, and in fact how it works...
I just pulled up gmaps on mexico vpn (and private session to avoid cached tiles) and it shows Golfo de México. Same with Canada.
I did the same with Apple Maps and it shows the localized name: Gulf of Mexico.
I work in the industry, we don't get to arbitrarily decide what names to show.

@rozeboosje@masto.ai @DemocracyMattersALot@mstdn.social localization should be a thing. It depends on what your local government accepts as "truth". Simply flipping your VPN also might not reveal the correct answer, as you might have cached tiles, etc...
My point is, no matter how stupid the decision to change the name is, it *is* an officially recognized name change.

Dems just voted to increase funding to ICE, just as they have for the past 20+ years. Dem mayors and governors are having their police arrest protesters. Meanwhile you took $300,000 from AIPAC and continue to support the genocide in Gaza.
WHO DO YOU EVEN WORK FOR???
Looks like I'm rustling some jimmies, just for recommending The Deprogram podcast lol
