@Kir @infobeautiful yeah. Maybe calories would be a better metric, if the goal is to compare (but that would make coffee meaningless). Hard to capture all in a single image.

RE: https://mastodon.scot/@Wen/116345487395720028

I fail to get myself excited for recent space developments, for a number of reasons.

... However, this kind of comparisons are pure poison. If we cannot take something good (at least in principle) and evaluate it objectively for what it is, then what's the point in doing anything? It's a sad, miserable life if nothing good can exist without being contrasted to something else. As if every person involved in an achievement had their work nullified by the crimes of someone else.

What a sad, joyless attitude.

@veronica I nuked my discord matrix bridge a few weeks ago (I wasn't using it but big communities were heavy). It was very old and I think I had to get a token out of the browser to set it up. I'm amazed that THAT survived for years and your legit api one got canned. Nothing should grow past the size where humans can't reverse an automatic ban. Or perhaps the size it even need an automatic ban.

@niko @rebe_gc @tek @wortezimmer @Kir @infobeautiful Were talking about land, not emissions. How you fertilize something has little to do with its direct land usage. And even if you care about that, the fertilizer need is directly proportional to the land.

@niko @rebe_gc @tek @wortezimmer @Kir @infobeautiful sure, purely grass fed livestock grazing unusable land is pretty much the ideal case. Not denying it. But that's not the average reality. For every animal industrially farmed there's land where its food grows instead of mine :) That's where the comparison makes sense. Re: fertilizer I'm not an agronomist, I don't know what is the minimum amount of animal farming needed to have enough fertilizer for the vegetable farming. Assuming there is a minimum. Plenty of ways of fixating nitrogen, I'm sure all with externalities some better, some worse than cow shit. But we dont farm cows for their shit.

https://matduggan.com/if-i-could-make-my-own-github/

(Pet peeve of mine: criticizing billionaires' rocket programs by referencing the phallic appearance as if you're the best Freudian acute observer since Sigmund. I mean.. It's a rocket. What should it look like? Now if you design a bycicle that looks like a rocket, I'll raise an eyebrow. Other than that absolutely marginal observation, the article is interesting.)

If I Could Make My Own GitHub

My friend and I have a game where we talk about what we'd do if we were rich. Not rich like 'paid off the mortgage' rich. Rich like a man who owns a submarine he's never been inside. Rich like a man whose third wife has a skincare

@mdhughes@appdot.net they are the same companies, not the same people. And even if they were the same people, they are different things. My point is that if we check every outcome for complete ideological purity (and I understand that mass murder is a big thing to ignore) we end up blind to the good. Life's hard, yes. And the world is a shitty place. Repeating it next to the work of someone who tries to keep a piece of it shit-free is not "being aware" but being self-righteous.

@publius@mastodon.sdf.org let's agree that this time it lasted a bit more than 2-3 years. :) I switched because I could not get to scale a 4k display in X. Only in ways were ugly or slow. I only vaguely know the basics of Wayland vs X11, but... If it's solving problems that I have, I consider switching (and yes, it added other problems. So.. Yeah...)

@Edent@mastodon.social I use matrix mostly as infrastructure for bridging other systems and even for that it's going to shit. My 4GB ram single user server buckles under the load of opening a room with more than a few participants and after a CSAM attack like those you reference I've had to run some arcane procedure to make sure I was not hosting that shit. I'm on vacation since today and my todo list says "deploy prosody". Enough.

@mcsurl@mastodon.social @ironicbadger@techhub.social that's how most complaints to Homeassistant changing things sound like, because there's a lot of old men among us. I'm in the chorus for this, "app" is a cursed term. But it's not the end of the world.

@susankayequinn@wandering.shop what's your recommended store for a DRM free epub? I thought Kobo would have it, but it doesn't let me download it (I know it's not your fault, and I would buy it full price if you have a better option.
