@silverpill I once ran a fedi poll among sysadmins, asking if they'd change software if it didn't imply sacrificing their community. Granted, my sample slice was tiny. But all of them said "yes". on nostr I can swap the relay software freely without causing my people any major disruption.

Appanot. what you experienced is very close to how it is to join mastodon.social and lool at the global feed. Onboarding is still very bonky for lonesome explorers. But yes, there are emerging communities. It all depends which relays you consult: much like the fediverse community is built around them. the difference being your identity does not belong to them. wss://spatia-arcana.com is absolutely lovely

In it's current form it is vowed to turn into fodder for corporate AI training. This is not my wish. It is the sad reality. Fediverse is awesome purely because of it's people. I reaöly hope they'll see what I see without having tp learn the hard way.

@johnofrobotz if we are to stand a chance, we need to organize on cheap and resilient infrastructure. I keep https://s.basspistol.org alive because I don't want to disposses my people from their identity until they come through. But I despise being the custodial of their creative output. No one should be such a custodial. But in reality, I'm just renting it all from a domain name registrar.

@johnofrobotz Nostr isn't a social media platform. It's nascent datamodel that's accomplished more interoperability in 4 years than fedi did in 16. If you tried 5 clients, you haven't scratched the surface. On it we can build resilient, nomadic, moderated communities, at a fraction of the cost of fedi. And we can express ourselves in an infinite amount of formats. An example: I update my website by posting events to relays. https://setto.basspistol.com No cryptobro is going to push me off that wave.

This is about the 3rd path you forgot to enumerate: to explore, dream up and reclaim protocols, networks, archives, and shared conditions that can build the internet we actually want!

Regardless, I think it is pretty cool that gift economy and value transactions are embedded in the protocol. Bound to make it less prone to the surveillance capitlaism from adds financing the web. Even without, I run a fedi instance on s.basspistol.org. the community nostr relay is far more affordable in terms of the resources. And we're talking decentealized git, group chat, media server etc etc...

@johnofrobotz@mastodon.girolab.foo not sure how nostr could ever be a silo. In fact, I posit fediverse's decentralization is only applicable to the value produced but a silo to your identity. However, there is already a plethora of bridges between the two. But they're auto blocked on most fedi instances.

I have 500 character in this fedi app that only does microblogging. But yes, it scares me to see the grassroots organize here. Fedi was built when the web was mostly friendly. It doesn't stand a chance in the (sadly) extremely adversierial fully automated web. It doesn't even have a trust establishment mechanism, and encryption is still on a far off horizon.

@silverpill@mitra.social I suggest you run a benchmark against any given nostr relay. But yeah, sure. If everyone runs a single user GTS (tech savy). or maybe your software, I will try it sometime! Ever tried to run a mastodon for +20 people on a raspberrypi? (rich from any other perspective then westener) but you could always fall back on someone else's server and hope they never find you controverisal or are subdued to force you off, sure (well connected) @johnofrobotz@mastodon.girolab.foo

@silverpill@mitra.social i agree, nobody should use mastodon, yet, at this point of the network, if you have any new cool idea for the fediverse, you're going to have to have it approved and incorporated by mastodon for it to float 😞 they pretty much own the network! If i were you, i'd make it trivial for admins to migrate a mastodon instance to your thing! that would shake this joint up a bit in the right direction! @johnofrobotz@mastodon.girolab.foo
