@grahamdunning@post.lurk.org your brain doesn't waste time, when you idly stare into space your default mode network gets busy processing stuff and making long range predictions even mindfulness gets in the way of that, you should just let your brain do its thing, you prob got enough going on without cramming even more in relatedly i reckon scrolling is part of why people feel like life's so unpredictable lately, they can't predict anything cos they never give their brains the chance *this message was brought to you by the staring into space party

Just found this gem lurking in a folder: AE_LIVE_ROCHDALE_221290 Performed at Baillies, Baillie St, Rochdale, 22.12.90, for Darrell Fitton's birthday party. Most of the gear we used was from Daz's studio. We spent a week putting it together in the rehearsal room downstairs at Suite 16 studio, which was right behind Dr Rock (Daz's studio was in the loft above Dr Rock). Incidentally - Suite 16 used to be called Cargo, same place Unknown Pleasures was recorded.

@Cognessence@social.linux.pizza @silvermoats@mastodon.social yeah it's funny how people on hifi forums talk about instruments sounding natural and how good the staging is when the song is a guy playing acoustic guitar and singing into two diff mics and it was mixed on a board but then if you do put a stereo/binaural pair into a room/venue with the same guy in then it just sounds like ass, so it's more about how well the illusion is holding up than anything ykwim

@Cognessence@social.linux.pizza @silvermoats@mastodon.social when i met rob he had an Aiwa CA-100H and that thing was fascinating sounding with DSL on, like all the hats were glistening and any lowrate sampling sounding gorgeous i should prob try to get my hands on some old aiwa tech and make a DSL processor, although it's prob like you say, very dependent on the speakers and whatnot 80s music and hifi kinda grew up in tandem (same for club rigs and PAs back then), everything was coloured for context, people making beats for boomboxes and all that i mean nothing is gonna be flat, chasing ghosts there p much (even worse with electronic music cos what even is 'should')

@silvermoats@mastodon.social @Cognessence@social.linux.pizza nothing about 80s hifi was accurate tbh. idk if u rem 'loudness' buttons. really ridiculous but some of them sounded ace, eg aiwa's 'dynamic super loudness', that was amazing but with tape u had diff tape types with diff bias settings and nothing about that was flat, you were cutting and boosting based on the tape response - plus you had dolby which is similar to multiband compression it was a minefield of tonal modification also why a lot of 80s albums sound thin and terrible on modern 'flat' setups

@oxy@social.bsdlab.au idk tbh i haven't taken the back off yet - i expect you can though you could prob ask oxi, they're small and responsive def a premium item, comes with a little case the heavy alu body means you prob don't wanna drop it face down but it feels good to use one thing is the encoders are a little wobbly (i got detented and idk if the smooth ones are also like that) - it's not that weird for push encoders to be like that though, so i allowed it and just got a couple of spares the other one i liked the look of is the Neuzeit Drop, might be worth a glance

@oxy@social.bsdlab.au it's got some knobs, idk i'll prob get one, might come in useful at some point recently bagged a few oxi e16s and i like them a lot - obvs diff things really but they prob make the bcr32 a bit surplus for my setup but it's cheap and hopefully will be widely available so that would be a plus, and their encoder-controllers have been p solid for me, i still have a bcr2000 going strong

@ghostmeet@mastodon.social yeah that's happening too with the synth (and there's other buffer-related stuff going on there as well) idk if i can call that verb poly cos there's not loads of voices, but there are diff pitches for diff parts of the network so it rings along with what's going in i make loads of these stupid things though, some are closer to poly, a lot use mc now

@ghostmeet@mastodon.social yeah he didn't mention the pitch stuff on the track on mine basically the whole reverb is pitched, lots of independent pitches, but no resynthesis happening - even though i enjoy the sound of adaptiverb and these kinda things it gets a bit too recognisable for me, it's too smooth/obviously resynthed theirs does sound more natural than adaptiverb though from the demos (i'm not really going for natural but good job anyway) i've used transient detectors on reverb sends before, that can work well tbh, and also removing noise can work, and vocoder-type stuff (tuned filterbanks, things like that) there's a million ways to do this stuff though, more fun finding your own

@ghostmeet@mastodon.social ok i see, they're using that to remove dissonance i guess there's fluid.bufstft~ in flucoma, guess u know that i took a v diff approach making those reverbs (it's rob's track using mostly my stuff), but i should commend them for the hack cos that's a cool seeming way to get something similar (not heard it, just guessing from the way i think it's working) although watching a bit more of this he's not talking about the pitch stuff there so idk actually, maybe just osmosis

@Cognessence@social.linux.pizza yeah so the gear we had up there was Casio FZ10M, Roland R8, and Atari 1040 ST running C-Lab Creator (all that stuff belonged to Daz) it was a bit of a weird setup for a live set tbh, but we'd been using that stuff in his studio for a bit and he asked us to do a set so we were like ok, let's have a go doing it this way the low res acid bit is a 202 running really fast at a high octave, sampled and pitched right down, i think we did that on the SK-1 but could have been the SK-5 (we used to do similar things with the RSD-10 a lot) there's a few other bits on there we made with our gear, eg one bit i can here that's a 202 and MS-10 - we just had samples of those bits playing on the FZ-10M the big stabby snare thing is off an old hip hop track - The Manipulator by Mixmaster Gee
