mastodon 4.8.0-nightly.2026-10-06Creates & solves problems. Sometimes, in that order!
Open source documentation & community wrangling. Technical writing for reader empathy. Bowling alley proprietess. Sings all the parts.

This year @viteconf.org@bsky.brid.gy is back online for all to enjoy! For three years, I've been sharing ideas about what docs is. Tune in for 2026 to hear my take on what docs is... not?

Finally coming up for air after life kind of turned upside-down on me. So many changes; so much new. Had some challenges, but I'm settling into a new normal.
Found a new choir to join, and their website is Astro (?!?!), so maybe this is the universe's way of saying it's all gonna work out. 😂
It's in the paper, so I guess it's official now!
See you soon, Manitoba! It's been a minute...

My initial hopes that this was a post about a cappella were soon dashed... 😂

New @astro@m.webtoo.ls site in 4... 3... 2
Wow, applying some of my own advice to my own writing *really* makes a difference. I should do this all the time! 😂
Watching a bunch of "how to hem your own pants" tutorials on YouTube and maybe the best advice so far: "If anyone is looking that closely at your hem, you don't need them in your life."

Looking forward to working with
@yanthomasdev@mastodon.social to devote some love to the @biomejs@fosstodon.org docs so they better serve the entire community: readers, contributors, reviewers, and maintainers!
It's strange having client docs work that's *not* open source, so I don't know how public to be. 😅
But, if you happen to know whose docs I'm helping... just published a batch of small but strategic sidebar nav & onboarding changes to usher in the weekend that (I think) make a HUGE difference. 💪
Brb... updating my profile to add "Bowling Alley Proprietress"
One of these days, I won't be able to keep up with the amazing @astro@m.webtoo.ls community... but I live to fight another month!
OK, not the *main* story of the day... but, the v6 major upgrade guide (and several brand new or revamped docs) was a BIG part of Team Docs life for months.
A lot of us worked on it. I hope it works for you when you upgrade! (And if it doesn't... well, that's just an opportunity to contribute yourself!)
🎨 As we're getting closer to the release of Astro v6, @astro@m.webtoo.ls and Starlight core maintainer Hideoo takes us on a trip down memory lane... with a new Starlight theme which is heavily inspired by the timeless design of the legacy Astro documentation.
(For the record, this is the only Astro Docs theme I recognize. Purple and orange, or it didn't happen.)
I had LONG given up hope of having any hits on my "Sony RX10V" search/alert, but yet, here we are.
(When you buy a whole bowling alley, WHAT'S ONE LITTLE NEW BIRDING CAMERA in comparison, right??)
First robin sighting of the year in the backyard! (We do have year-round robins, but they tend to be sneakier in winter and are more in the forest than backyards.)
I, also, have been sneakier this winter and exploring some big life changes... so, taking this as a sign of avian solidarity! 🐦⬛
I haven't made the time yet to write about contributing *a cappella* to open source, but at least I now have another example to use when advocating for the opportunities for and importance of contributions beyond code!
(Should open source projects have *jingles*??)
It's Global Big (bird) Day! An excuse to go hang out in one of my favourite spots before the baseball game. (And, no day is complete without some blue jays!)
Why no, I have no idea why LumaFusion keeps crashing on my Android tablet.
Oh no. I do not need to be given ideas... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiKMmEHBqVY
It's not even 8:00 a.m. and I've already teared up twice watching various Blue Jays news and media. I'm gonna be a hot mess tonight. 🐦⚾ #BlueJays #BlueJays50
In the last 3 weeks we've had *18* "help wanted" issues in the docs repo closed by community-submitted PRs, & it feels pretty darn sweet!
It's like my ViteConf talk "Docs as Community Building" isn't just hot air: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWK3Y_1kmaM&list=PLqGQbXn_GDmnObDzgjUF4Krsfl6OUKxtp
My ViteConf 2024 talk is now out as a standalone video!
Was really honoured to be able to share the stage with so many great speakers, and share some tips for building an open-source community through documentation!
Check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MK4s-P3kqyA
Even if you didn't catch the start, it's never too late to hop into @viteconf@fosstodon.org ! We're a few hours in, but the 12 hour stream will immediately repeat. So you can join at any time and just keep watching.
Join us at https://viteconf.org/live #ViteConf
OK, getting ready to start the 2nd run at the top of the hour! Jump in to https://viteconf.org/live if you missed the first showing.
The full 12 hours of talks is about to start over from the beginning again, and... I'm still awake! Will I make it the full 24hrs?? You'd better come join the chat and find out/help me!
There's way too much streaming, in way too many time zones, to keep track of today! #ATmosphereConf is 4hr diff, our provincial youth bowlers at nationals (Joe is coaching!) 3 hr diff, and Blue Jays 1h, had to carefully map out my day from multiple schedules, all written in a diff, & not my, time.
That thing where your crows wonder why you'll rush outside to photograph the eagles flying overhead, but don't pay specific attention to them. After four "hello"s, I came out with peanuts.
(This is an older video, but we have regular "Hello Crows" in the backyard.)
The @astro@m.webtoo.ls month-end blog post and newsletter have been drafted! If you're not subscribed (to either/both), now's a good time:
https://astro.build/newsletter/signup/ - Just a tiny taste to whet your appetite. A handful of news items, and your monthly "Top 10".
https://astro.build/rss.xml - The full 8-course meal! (Too big?? NEVER!) Put on your stretchy pants and dig in!
Based on my regular home play from the couch, pretty sure that my signature form of Jeopardy! question if I ever got on the show would be, "Is it...?" 😅
