I wanted to quickly explain why school kids should learn markdown instead of MS Office, and ended up writing a major Epos on Markdown vs obsolete writing formats:

https://ia.net/topics/markdown-and-the-slow-fade-of-the-formatting-fetish

This is, I kid you not, about 1/6th of what I wrote. I'll publish the rest later.

Had a great time giving the talk on Madness and Imagination this morning at Beyond Tellerrand #btconf. Here are the slides (raw unedited). I'm on the way to Berlin right now. Will be back tomorrow. https://sharing.ia.net/presenter/b541d9ee82f24318a025b3a1a2f97d67/view

Madness and Imagination

We all have reason to get mad about how universally ugly, dumb, and badly made things are around us. And while many of us are angry enough to take things into our own hands, unfortunately, making things better is not for everyone. It takes more than frustration, anger, and rage against the machine, it more than money, skill, and brains, to do things differently. It takes imagination.

My topic for this year's Beyond Tellerrand in Düsseldorf. https://beyondtellerrand.com/events/dusseldorf-2026

beyond tellerrand in Düsseldorf - 27–28 Apr 2026

beyond tellerrand is the affordable single-track event where creativity and technology meet. Taking place in Düsseldorf and Berlin these days with 500+ attendees each in a renowned, familiar and friendly atmosphere.

Back at my favorite topic: "We can fully attend to only one thing at a time. Multitasking is an illusion. Task switching is expensive. To write well, you need to protect your focus. You either write, structure, or format. Avoid doing everything at once. You’ll write better, and enjoy it more." I wrote this almost a year ago. Not sure why I didn't press publish. https://ia.net/topics/separate-writing-and-formatting

Just posted my post about Microsoft Office and how obsolete it is, Siri hon the bus, and then I hear two women complaining about... Microsoft. "You know why it's so crazy? Teams made for people that are not like me. Very boring people with only one email account." "They surely exist." "Maybe. But since everybody uses it, I have to use it, too." "Sometimes I wonder if these boring people exist though, or if it is made for people that don't exist." "I don't know but it does drive me crazy."

@sherold@mastodon.online @mdalves@mastodon.online Yeah, well I don't miss the bullying from Google and the broken frameworks, the 1-star Play Store Karens that don't want to spend money on software but would like to talk to the manager, and I certainly don't miss the scattered device landscape, the exponentially rising support cost and the shameless piracy from Android. But never say never. The app is still there, it still works, but it stays frozen in Carbonite, for now.

@michael This is the way. :-) Seriously though, our son is a big fan of iA Presenter. He's not impartial, but mostly he prefers it because it is much much faster than WYSIWYG. I need to write about an Office in schools next.

@imsop Calling it a "false dichotomy" is a polite way of ignoring the message. The comparison isn’t about features—it’s about how tools shape thought. Word trains people to format documents. Markdown encourages them to express and structure thought. That’s the axis. I left the detailed comparison "WYSIWYG clickedyclick" vs "writing structure" and that in fact all you need to know to use Markdown well is the hashtag out, for later. Images and Links, yeah, not really great.

We've thoroughly studied all kinds of presentation apps for years now—but it's the first time I see them all compared directly with iA Presenter. Traditional designs enlarge the thumbnails in the WYSIWYG GUI and compress the narrative. Feels redundant and uneconomic. iA Presenter showcases visuals on the left and puts the focus on the narrative. Notice the limited space given to the story in conventional presentation apps. This makes clear why we often pack our slides with text in PPT & Co.

@benhamill Yeah, 1/6th is about school. GDocs is a special case in terms of format, it's made for collaboration and that shows deep in the format's architecture. It still imitates Word's UI which is part of what makes it so weird. Not sure if collaboration is the right form for kids to learn writing (it's definitely useful in companies), it could be useful at school, and it could be great if schools in fact taught collaborative writing. For flyers you need layouts or templates.

@oblomov @blaine I'm going to later make the case that basically, all you really need to write, just write is the hash for headings. The rest is for later. I left this out in the first part because it was already long enough.

@veronica Similar history. In the evenings I now work on a side track where I deal with all sorts of import and export to and from Markdown. It's not the most fun part of the project because it's made for writing, not for parsing. :-) I struggled quite a bit trying to explain what it is in comparison to real formats. Writing the article made a couple of things clear that were not clear to me previously, even though I've been working with it in our writing app for 15 years now.

@TimWardCam "Oh, and why does anyone care about typography, which you appear not to?" 🤣 https://ia.net/topics/the-web-is-all-about-typography-period Since 2006 I care. I also farmer about writing. I care enough to say with confidence that they are two entirely different things.

@agebhard I noticed while I spoke how the e parts of the speech started growing together. Who is to blame? The economy? The technology? Design? Everyone that works. What we accept as normal scares us to trust our senses when we perceive the that what is commonly accepted as normal is not necessary (not-wendig) but historical and often plain accidental.

@agebhard First part went well then I got nervous and started speeding through taking shortcuts. Too much material. I also just realized after the talk that the key to imagination is trusting your perception no matter how abnormal it may be.

@agebhard Not sure about that. Switzerland definitely doesn't like them. In Japan "nails that stick out want to get hammered in". Even in Australia they have a "tall poppy syndrom" (heads get cut off). The U.S. may be a bit different.

@agebhard I watched the talk and saw lots of gaps, wondering: "is this still Morse code still comprehensible?". It's difficult to judge how much one needs to explain to make sense and how much people can figure out by themselves. One can feel it though. A stripped down V2 will definitely substantially better. :)
