RE: https://indieweb.social/@bonfire/115507615653471686

What @bonfire@indieweb.social are working on is impressive and important and y'all should consider supporting their crowdfunder!

Bonfire was absolutely the top contender for my work building New_ Public's Local project (https://newpublic.org/local); in the end, I'm building mostly from scratch not because Bonfire isn't great, but because I wanted our team's 2+ years of research, planning, and design to lead the conversation, not the technology.

BUT we're in a unique spot. Most communities could use Bonfire.

RE: https://mastodon.social/@wearenew_public/115645917115143165

Six months ago, I joined New_ Public to help build a new social platform for local communities. Today, I could't be more excited and proud to share what our amazing little team has cooked up, and is launching in closed beta this week.

This isn’t another toxic, chaotic space — Roundabout is designed to be useful, fun, and helpful and it isn’t motivated by stealing your data and selling you stuff.

@anildash@me.dm one day I'd love to change your mind. Markdown is a great tool for low-consequence things but I have *scars* from dealing with situations where devs thought it was a good idea to put it in front of non-technical people with flavours that had bespoke functionality. As a result of markdown's success in scratching an itch for folks who understand html, the tech industry has woefully under-built text editing tools for people who find HTML and markdown confusing.

RE: https://mastodon.social/@wearenew_public/115729800203396909

We've been working hard over the past six months to ship Roundabout to our pilot communities. It's amazing to see them come to life, and I'm so excited to keep building & learning to support healthy online spaces for local communities. 💖

Folks are crowdsourcing GDPR compliance playbooks for Mastodon instances. Because of course they are. ❤️

Canadians: am I out of line for thinking that an NDP (union-left, for those outside of Canada) politician probably shouldn't re-post Theresa May talking about the lack of civil discourse being the result of digital platforms, and positing that what we need is more gatekeeping of who gets to speak? 🫣

@backupbear@aus.social @anildash@me.dm 100% agreed; the difference is that we don't have articles excited about latex or word star. ;-) My markdown scars are entirely around devs doing [human] style transfer / cargo culting and saying "wow markdown is great for my github pages" / "therefore this will be great for people who call themselves 'writers'" Thankfully I haven't come across many examples of "I created an amazing CRM tool for Aunt Betty's online business, it uses LaTeX in the notes section." 😂

@anildash@me.dm (and the argument that markdown is "easy" to me represents a tech chauvinism, because I have 100% listened to smart people who have tried to use it and found it very confusing for anything but trivial examples like *bold*, even though I think a lot of your assessment is spot on 💜)

@anildash@me.dm @lkanies@hachyderm.io this is one of the things I think we got right with OAuth. There are many problems with that spec and the "ecosystem" around it, but the "Gruber-esque" alt-universe where everyone "vibe-specced" the token-auth pattern is a much worse one than ours.

@anildash@me.dm any experts I see using the "advanced stuff" I view as wielding a foot-chainsaw (slightly tempered by your extremely valid 'how important is data consistency really' point, and how insanely great llms are at munging this stuff). I've also seen way too many examples of people taking the "easy" stuff and applying the advanced stuff for non-experts, hence my trigger around it. 😅

@lutindiscret @wearenew_public also (so many caveats / subtleties!) we're very interested in what federation / credible exit looks like for these communities and their users alike, but it's a complicated scenario that existing platforms haven't tackled to our knowledge. We'll be doing more work in the new year both internally and externally to figure out the best strategy there.

@emma@orbital.horse @ben@werd.social there will be ActivityPub. 💜

One thing that's interesting, though, is that for "big world" social media, the value of interop is immediately clear. For small communities where the goal is the shared space itself, the value of decentralization is less obvious and getting the UX right becomes an even bigger challenge.

We're excited to properly explore these questions in the new year, though!

The project opened up so many questions, which I think is critical. The prose collaboration space – currently dominated by Google Docs and MS Word – should be a whole industry. I hope that Upwelling can serve as a first step towards many new tools and approaches to serve writers.

@emma@orbital.horse @mat @ben@werd.social not sure if Emma will see this reply either, but thankful for the observation and that when we do explore "out-of-silo experiences" 👽 we'll be making sure to reach as diverse as set of networks as possible, in support of our goal to really empower stewards, communities, and their members. 💜

@reichenstein html is hard to learn. Markdown is slightly easier, but e.g., link syntax is decidedly not obvious. Once we start introducing more complicated syntaxes, it goes sideways into a realm of total non-comprehension very quickly. I think this is all in-line with your argument, but I guess I would add that it's maybe worth adding a giant warning sign that while limited, situated markdown can be great, it shouldn't be put in load-bearing situations that it's unsuited for.

@trochee one of the really nice things about using Automerge/Peritext here is that the comments aren't necessarily lost on merge, and thanks to arbitrary metadata, could be preserved with varying visibility tags (e.g. "documentation" vs "change-specific discussion")! The wiki question looms large! So many thoughts, so few characters. I'm sure @pvh has thoughts, as do @gordon and @cdata. 👀

@trochee 🙏💯 One of the other things I'm super curious to see is more refined ways to comment and discuss code, too. Inline comments are so limiting; feels possible to do better (without depending on infra like github)

@jcfischer one of the most interesting parts of the work for me (that wasn't the focus of Upwelling) is that writers don't have tool choice when it comes to collaboration – everyone has to use the same tool. We think there are ways around that, similar to how developers use git for collab but can choose their text editor freely. Lots more work to be done in order to get there, though!

@lcannell alas! We really wanted to, but spent much of the time in the early phases fighting with JS packaging and getting things in wasm land going, so the actual functionality was more notional than usable. The tech is now solid and being used elsewhere, so hopefully there'll be future iterations that can do as much.

@lutindiscret (and, to be clear, I'm not representing any formal decision by @wearenew_public or Roundabout here, just that to my knowledge, it's not something we've definitely decided one way or the other, and I want to be up-front and honest that at present, it's not open and that we haven't yet done any of the work to make that possible)

@reichenstein in my experience (in particular, implementing and improving a CMS whose primary editing interface was markdown [not my idea] for Condé Nast writers and editors), beyond the most basic concepts like bold and italic, non-technical people really struggle with markdown. I think this is because markdown _is_ html: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_Generalized_Markup_Language I've talked and thought a lot about markdown, and I like to say that Gruber didn't invent it as much as he re-discovered it.

@joshua me too! 😅 Not actively working on anything rn, but I'm so stoked that we have primitives that can enable people to build better tools. The last time I tried, ca 2012-18, the underlying collab libs just weren't up to the task.

@amirouche I know, totally get it. It's just a UX affordance, but like many affordances, matters in a subtle but important way. (And I totally understand and agree with the resistance to implementing it, too!) Worth reading @shengokai's thread on the birdsite about why these things aren't so simple as a community preference.

Basically, instead of QTing something, on Mastodon it's possible to reply to a post and then boost your reply.

That way, the visibility is the same as a Quote would have been, but with the interesting property that the OP doesn't get silenced/steamrolled, but the original post is still easily visible. More conversational, less adversarial.
