Conor Titania Mc Bride
mastodon 4.8.0-alpha.2+glitchIrish in Scotland, maker of mistake, I'm Conor, a trans-femme poly Computer Scientist. Titania is my middle name: it's nice if you use it in "full name" situations, but I remain "Conor" in first-name situations. I am not the first girl called Conor, and I think it could catch on.
Professional pronouns: they/them
Personal pronouns: she/her
Tony Hoare once told me he was tickled my idea of the "vowel derivative". A vowel deriviative is a one-hole context for a character in a string, such that you get a valid word, whatever valid vowel you plug in the hole.
E.g. "b-g" is a vowel derivative because "bag", "beg", "big", "bog" and "bug" are all words.
Tony further told me that he enjoyed thinking up definitions for the annoying missing words that blocked candidate vowel derivatives from acquiring that status.
So let us honour the late lamented Tony Hoare by cooking up appropriate definitions for

The fact that "sodium bromate" sounds like a made up water impurity that turns men Australian yields a hilarity compounded by the fact that it's an actual chemical.
I'm profoundly grateful to friends who made me react to she/her pronouns with blushes of joy.
Let me give youse all a piece of old person unsolicited advice.
GO WHERE IT'S GOOD TO BE QUEER.

God loves the beautiful woman I am. People sometimes notice.
argyments was a typo but I decided to keep it
When you find yourself in the business of having argyments about matters of fact with people coded as scientists, do not be surprised when you are met with secondhand disinformation, uncritical regurgitation of prejudice, abuse, and if you are very very lucky, flattery that you are a big-brain whose thoughts are not in the same universe and therefore require no engagement.
Thinking about ask-bis, I wrote a page to talk about how I'm reimagining equational derivations: https://github.com/msp-strath/ask-bis/wiki/Equations
In the noughties they DID NOT WANT dependently typed programming. And that meant they did not want me. But here I fucking am.
In ask, a problem is presented as a present imperative (e.g., define or prove) until it has been solved, at which point the verb changes to a past passive (defined, proven). It occurs to me that the data declaration already fits this pattern, and what is now needed is an interactive mode of data type construction in which the problem begins da!
Today so far:
I was annoyingly awake.
I made coffee, did my cardiac meds, had a bath, and put on clean clothes.
I turned yesterday's leftovers into lunch and ate them.
I napped on the sofa for several hours.
I cooked dinner and ate it.
I napped on the sofa for several hours.
I am now annoyingly awake.
Being trans isn't even the weirdest thing about me.
Fighting for acceptance is not new.
It was with mixed feelings that I just sailed past a very long queue for the ladies' toilet at Edinburgh Waverley and let myself into the queueless and unoccupied "third space" with my radar key. It's hard to look all "this is what you wished for" when you really need to pee.
I am so exhausted right now.
What a year.
Dependently typed programming.
They didn't want it.
I made them fucking eat it.
I genuinely cannot believe it has taken me this long to check whether there is a British Rail station with the three-letter code LLM.
I'm still scarred by the fights that I had in the noughties, even though I won them.
I was reminded of a line from Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Control (Alexander Knox) says
"Merlin's become an industry. It's the industry and I'm not employed!".
Control always preached that intelligence depends on a kind of gentleness....
SPOT THE MASTER'S TARDIS
Teaching is listening.
So many ex-colleagues never figured that out.
"HOW RUDE!" is the first thing they say when you resist their dismantling of your dignity.
The next thing they should say is "OW!".
Funky differential operators show up a lot in CS103, because I love them. In Sem 1, we do the forward difference operator for polynomials in one variable. In Sem 2, we do Brzozowski for regular expressions. None of these operators is quite the derivative they learned in school.
And then on the test, I give them this thing
prop Insertion ABC (List ABC) (RegEx ABC) where
-- you can insert b *somewhere* into xs
-- to get a string which p likes
prove Insertion b xs p by Between as cs where
prove xs = as ++ cs
prove Likes p (as ++ b : cs)
and get them to prove some eerily familiar laws about it...
Anyway, it's time to stop napping on the sofa and go be annoyingly awake in bed.
I was just about to go to bed when I heard a new woodpigeon.
insert "by the British"
Stone Duality always reminds me of this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Xsv9iZPYwE and in particular the joke with the sign at the end.
Queen's Park, I am in you. But I don't half need a bath.
Trio -- Da Da Da [[ Official Video ]]
And some Steve Khan, which somehow always reminds me of Variations, or is it the other way around? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSeo_wCn7b0
And with that, I’m on a train back to the southside. Might be on for larks in a bit.
RE: @billyjoebowers@mastodon.online
And people are still arguing over who to vote for. Voting is over. Only murder now.
Nothing about my childhood or my education made room for my humanity.
