Github Copilot’s new pricing model went live today and r/GithubCopilot is having a meltdown. It’s glorious

So is this where we finally realize that *a ton* of ad impressions are actually bot traffic and web crawlers and the whole ad-supported model of the internet was an unsustainable, unfair rip-off anyways?
Replying to
@Steve@social.coop It’s totally unexpected! And this is definitely isolated to only Github Copilot and won’t be coming for OpenAI, Anthropic, and Gemini. That would be crazy /s

@StarkRG@myside-yourside.net Running multi-trillion parameter models all day, every day, for $12/mo is not sustainable?? What do you mean??? /s

@dawn@social.lol Did… did they just suggest a loan-based pay-over-time prediction market betting on LLM usage at any given time?
We are up to 3 sticks from our crows. They’re really doing their best to help us build a nest 😂

@dawn@social.lol Silicon Valley capitalists have consistently used sci-fi as an instruction set. We need to stop giving them ideas
This would’ve been stick number 4, and the biggest stick yet, but they dropped it on accident :(

@xorlou@lgbtqia.space From the looks of it, they’re all running to Deepseek, ChatGPT Codex, and Claude. The price corrections will spread eventually though 🤞

@tessarakt@mastodon.social Based on what I’m reading, I’d brace yourself for some irrationally frustrated devs. And here I am blocking Copilot in Github and throughout our Microsoft org :D

I don’t need a proper debugger. Just give me 93 printf statements and I’ll fix the bug just as quickly /s

It’s like real-life mean girls sometimes lol. Business and sales people taking over a company is a death blow. Sustainable business requires the people at the top of have an intimate understanding of the inner workings of the company’s products
Replying to
@jackryder @arrjay @da_667 I’ve only been in the industry professionally for less than 10 years, but it doesn’t take much to learn from history and the mistakes of others.
You’re right that it’s amusing though. At a certain point, I think all of us have to become at least a bit nihilistic, or else risk totally burning out and losing our shit
Replying to
@jackryder @arrjay @da_667 100%. CS degrees are not a boot camp, but they’re certainly drifting towards boot camp territory
There’s a lot of assumed competence given to people with high pay and big tech companies. In reality though, a lot of them are isolated from reality, leading to the shitshow we have today

@jackryder @arrjay @da_667 could be its own class in schools as part of a computer literacy program tbh
Replying to
@jackryder @arrjay @da_667 similarly, we need more ethics classes for devs. It’s so important to think through the consequences of the features and projects you work on and how they will affect users. That might also be fixed (or at least helped) by real unions in tech, but we all know how that’s going

@hub@cosocial.ca @tessarakt@mastodon.social You can disable it org-wide in Github. There are myriad ways to block Copilot and Recall on Windows, though they seem to break without rhyme or reason. Copilot showed back up on my machine despite being blocked via Intune. I haven’t had time to dig back into that yet though
Replying to
@hub@cosocial.ca @tessarakt@mastodon.social You can block the Copilot desktop app via Intune and group policy rules. You can also disable Copilot integration in Office apps/Edge, removing the icon from all of their UIs. If a user somehow still accesses it, Copilot should show an error about being blocked by the org. That’s been my experience at least.
