Fuck, I need to do copyright screaming.

Summary:

  • Copyright is an approximately good idea that was immediately captured by the worst kind of ghouls.
  • Creatives deserve the control and benefits of their works.
  • No one needs their entire lifetime + another entire lifetime.
  • Companies that enclose the commons for profit should be destroyed at the regulatory level.

I'm not even sure how to express my feelings here.

If you still think LLMs are a _net good_, you need to square with yourself fast. If you want to save any face, you need to start being very loud about the abuses of power and principle at the heart of this technology.

And if you don't understand why Gallup deciding to use the bullshit machine to make up statistics is the beating heart of evil, maybe you're too far gone.

Honestly, at this point, my horror at the "The computers are totally thinking!" types is shifting.

For a long time, I considered it mostly a mark of how gullible some folks are.

But as the march of "progress" goes forward, I realize the horror is actually how small they imagine other people to be.

To the sufficiently advanced booster, we're all just p-zombies.

My college degree was in information systems, and a couple of my cs courses talked about the previous iterations of the no code, no engineers, just business men with their ideas cycles, and let me tell you, living through the latest one, I get why my professors talked so poorly of the silver bullets.

UML and expert systems were both taught as systems to make non-programmers effective at building information systems. In a course in 2011/2012 talked about how both failed to live up to their promise.

Just a thing I'm thinking about as the software industry all collectively waking up to the latest do everything system isn't actually good at everything.

@xgranade@wandering.shop Yeah. Fucking. This is one of the deepest signs that the US, as a society is "post truth". The people whose job was to find the truth have all relinquished their duty and decided to throw in with the liars and cheats. And we're being told we should trust the process.

@SnoopJ@hachyderm.io The construction has also been used by bigots to specifically imply that "they're not _actually_ their pronouns, but they're the ones they _prefer_"

Like, it became a dog whistle for "trans people are crazy, don't ya know" and a lot of the anger is in response to that.

Today I learned about vb/vi units in CSS.

They're the viewport percentage units (vh/vw) but combined with the logical directions block and inline.

So if you're using a writing system that isn't left to right, top to bottom, the direction fit the writing system you're using.

This is very neat.

I might need to add a section to my PyCon talk that is "I just think it's neat" because there's so many features I do not have time to develop material on, but folks should _definitely_ go look.

Seriously, though, I'm learning a bunch by just, reading the specs, CSS is way cooler than I thought and I already liked the language.

@xgranade ... as someone who runs an open source project with dozens of first ever open source contributions, like... I agree with the principle of engaging with newbies and helping them become successful. But like... I also close spam without comment. And if most llm prs are, as the writer claims, spam, there's no actual thing to teach? Don't spam is a fundamental norm of human centric internet culture. I'm not wasting time on someone who hasn't learned "being a person in a public space," and I don't advocate anyone else does either.

Write tech talks. Learn even more about your technical special interest.

Did a few minutes of poking at my little markdown word counter, and the voice of @treyhunner@mastodon.social came to me and got me to change the output print statement from:

```
print(f"Total: {sum(result.count for result in results)}\n\t{"\n\t".join(f"{fc.file}: {fc.count}" for fc in results)}")
```

to

```
print(f"Total: {sum(result.count for result in results)}", *(f"{fc.file}: {fc.count}" for fc in results), sep="\n\t")
```

It's gnarly either way, but at least I don't have a bunch of "\n\t" in the middle anymore.

EDIT: Okay, and it also doesn't have nested F-strings anymore. Very cool feature, but wow does it make parsing a line harder.

Okay, because I want to say a thing in a talk, and I want to see if others agree before I say it:

#IndieWeb types:

Self hosting does not need to mean "hardware you own" and can include "hardware you rent". (EG Would a VPS count as self hosting?)

Happy to hear reasoning for either side or both if you're landing in the middle.

(To be clear: I will be saying this, but whether I say it without qualifiers will depend on if this is largely accepted.)

@glyph @davidism Yeah, glyph's got the lay of the land, my last straw was the announcement in my email today about them making it an "open AI platform" is the opposite of what I want from the software. The only power I have in this relationship is to stop paying for it and finding a different tool. So that's what I'm doing.

Dykes "first pass" was making sure that exactly this works.

Type hint your argument class with a Path and get the right behavior.

My word counter's looks like this:

```
@dataclass
class WordCounter:
"""
A simple markdown word counter.
"""
paths: Annotated[list[Path], "Paths to files to operate on."]
debugging: Annotated[bool, "Show debugging output."] = False
```

Okay, worst talk development problem:

It's tight, it's missing some of the ancillary sections (intro, outro, a couple of interstitial jokes), but it's a full ten minutes short.

Going to be adding detail. >.>

Okay, I've compiled all the suggestions, just for community interest: The top three suggestions: 1) VSCodium with 7 total suggestions 2) Emacs with 6 3) vim/neovim with 5 For the data nerds: A "suggestion" is "mentioned positively by a person". A person could (and many did!) make multiple suggestions. I combined vim and neovim by personal preference. I did not keep the differentiation, but I don't think neovim was suggested on its own, and vim was. Also, multiple emacs folks were self deprecating in their suggestion, which I find funny considering my network has a bunch of fans.

Clarifications/thoughts: "Has AI plugins" isn't a deal breaker. If all the tools did AI stuff strictly as plugins and not forcing them on everyone, I wouldn't be having this conversation. Yes, I know demanding cross platform is demanding, but I write code that is consumed by students. The most likely OS for them to develop on? Windows. If you come at me with OS elitism, I'm as likely to block you as verbally slap you. Yes, I like Linux, too, but I don't have the power or time to convince every person on the planet to switch. And replacing all the tools isn't strictly necessary! I'll take "good for Python" or "good for the web" or "good for databases". I do need to replace all those specialties because they're currently all jetbrains for me. And a single tool would be amazing, but I recognize that's complicated.

@b0rk @sarajw css color 5 is really exciting generally. With the syntax above, you don't even need to craft from the same color gamut. You can have rgb colors as the from to hsl, for example, and it does the necessary conversion for you. To answer the original question, if I need quick prototype colors, I'm using css named colors, which is not everyone's cup of tea.

@DarcMoughty I can only speak from my projects, but I wouldn't knowingly accept PRs from either group. There's a pile of other reasons besides the spam angle. If you submit a PR that doesn't have cleared copyright, you put my project and me at legal risk. Unfortunately, llms regurgitating rights reserved code is known and largely untested in courts. Until there are clear legal lines, I cannot accept any LLM generated code for practical reasons. My biggest project is an education tool. It is, entirely, about learning mastery of skills. LLM coding is antithetical to that purpose and I will always prefer hand coded solutions to ppb problems because the whole point is learning to understand computers. And finally, look at how much context you had to write for this "just curious" question. Do you see how you're creating a volunteer bandwidth problem just by posing it? Imagine this question, but every single LLM PR you get. Do you see how you've doubled (at least) the amount of work for a given PR?

Being able to call up table views and poke at them to get a sense of the thing. But I can also do that with table descriptions in the database shell. The IDE just means I don't have to remember the invocation for the particular database engine to spot check things.
