@eobet The interviewer is so desperate to have the empire be something else, other than the USA, that it actually helps reinforce the point, because George has to be so explicit and keep repeating himself.

@yosh@toot.yosh.is In my experience it’s a more nuanced reaction to the *intent* behind the “stolen” works. Anna’s Archive, The Internet Archive, and other archivists seek to preserve media intact, and give credit to the original creators. LLM companies use artists’ own work, absent their consent, to train systems explicitly intended to replace them and erase any trace of credit from the replicated work. It’s legally similar, but ethically it’s not even close.

@hpod16@eupolicy.social @chroma@raccoonisland.social The EU commission has recently been promoting “W Social”, a European VC-backed social media company that requires ID verification to sign up. It’s not actually independent of US tech, since it relies entirely on Bluesky’s AT protocol, but several high profile EU politicians, including Ursula von der Leyen, have been pitching it as THE European social media platform. @_elena@mastodon.social has written about it recently, if you need a starting point. https://blog.elenarossini.com/tag/w-social/

W Social - Elena Rossini

A series of articles about the controversial social network W Social, a for profit company set up by Swedish entrepreneurs, who openly admitted they want to help train European AI models with their users' data (amongst other things).

@mahryekuh@hachyderm.io @jik@federate.social It has been weird watching my work roll out AI, because ostensibly they understood this.

What they pitched:

  • more time to do research, craft specs, explore designs, write tests and iterate
  • the tools enhance our existing skills and knowledge
  • more collaboration across the company

What they’re doing now:

  • expecting features to ship 5-10x as quickly
  • only AI agents may commit code to the app
  • briefs, specs, ‘skills’, documentation and tests are all hastily written by LLMs

@mahryekuh@hachyderm.io @jik@federate.social I certainly didn't believe them by the time this change actually happened. And maybe I was naive, but a couple of years ago, I think I would have believed them. We're a tiny startup (~5 people in our whole product team), and previously the things we claimed to do generally matched up with what we actually did. We were extremely agile and flexible in how we worked. We shipped whole new products in a single week, prior to using AI. We're *much* slower using the AI so far.

@penpot I’m a designer/front-end dev. I use Claude (not Code) at work sometimes because I am required to. I don’t use LLMs for design or coding. The costs of the tools (stolen data, exploitative training practices, resource use, the ghouls running them, etc.) are far too great, no matter the quality of the output. But when it comes to the output, it’s also mostly very low quality for design and front-end code, anyway. I don’t and will not use LLMs outside of work for any purpose.

@Hippie Autistic folks have a nasty historical habit of pointing out unfairness and injustice, and refusing to transgress moral and ethical boundaries, which is a bit of a bother if your whole thing is running a fascist oligarchy.

@kimcrawley@zeroes.ca Was the alt text for these written using an OCR tool? It’s a bit messy, with some random extra letters and slightly incorrect content order. Also, the low contrast between the text and background colours makes most of them a bit tricky to read. (That’s why I was reading the alt text.) Sorry to nitpick.

@yosh@toot.yosh.is I don’t trust this argument because I hear it often in my own workplace, and yet the real effect of LLM coding has been the opposite. Now that you don’t have to go via, and get feedback from, opinionated developers who may slow you down, we’re seeing a kind of “first idea best idea” pattern play out. Exec level folks can much more easily and quickly create artefacts that they inevitably get attached to, or even ship. It’s “my daughter drew this logo idea” but for an entire code base.

@tante@tldr.nettime.org 100% I don’t think anyone really hates technology. What almost everyone hates, but may struggle to identify or articulate, is the rapacious, capitalist, consumerist, colonialist, patriarchal hierarchy by which our technology is informed.

@sturobson@front-end.social This is so cool. Adjusting the scale for different viewports with a single custom property is great. I wonder if there’s a way to combine this with something like the Utopia fluid scale, with the values calculated in place, negating the fixed breakpoints almost entirely.
