@MLE_online@social.afront.org What’s cool about broccoli pods is that as they dry out, the outer shells shrink and harden, creating increasing tension against that inner membrane. Once the pod is dry enough, the tension gets so intense that the merest touch will make it fly apart like a grenade, scattering seeds everywhere. It’s an incredible propagation system!

@MLE_online@social.afront.org I can see the resemblance — those translucent discs look a lot like the membranes in the middle of broccoli seed pods (same material, different shape!) https://flic.kr/p/2kVVvyh https://flic.kr/p/2kW11bm

More exciting #animation news from the San Francisco #SIGGRAPH chapter: The legendary Aaron Blaise will give a behind-the -scenes talk about his award-winning hand-drawn short "Snow Bear", Thursday April 16 at 5pm Pacific. Tickets are available here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/snow-bear-from-inspiration-to-a-finished-film-tickets-1985639871307

@topher_batty@mastodon.acm.org Great idea! Feel free to add me (if publishing a few papers every couple of decades counts as “academic”! ;-)

@kach@mastodon.mit.edu Sounds like a paper that must be heard to be believed! Is there a project page with audio?
