Since today’s theme appears to be hugely expensive products with unique hinging characteristics that, nevertheless, share much of their underpinnings with much more affordable versions, let me remind you of this absurd but interesting sedan. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2019-lincoln-continental/

Cannot imagine any drug giving me a greater high than I had today when I needed 85 grams of butter and, in a single cut, made a block weighing 85.1 grams.

Do I trust this computer?, my iPhone asks me for what has to be the thousandth time using the same computer logged into the same Apple ID. Enter your passcode, it demands once again, reflecting the hardware, software, and services working together in a way only Apple can deliver.

I have no idea why half the desktop apps I use today operate in a single window only, but it needs to stop. Let me open windows! Don’t make me toggle between tabs!

Replying to
@amonduin@mstdn.ca That was, in context, a comment specifically about the mic-trains-ads conspiracy theory. I see what you’re saying but the two pieces are not contradictory. This is a problem of perception and an actual problem of privacy and consent. Both are true.

There is a pretty basic argument for effective public transit, which is that driving is a skill and, like any skill, something not everyone can do well, so there should be other choices.

Sometimes I regret pieces like the one I wrote last night because this space is full of people who think they’re being helpful by pointing out that it’s my fault for expecting a service to work correctly or as marketed.

I Regret the Blood Pact I Have Made With iCloud Photos

Sometimes, I do not recognize a trap until I am already in it. Photos in iCloud is one such situation. When Apple launched iCloud Photo Library in 2014, I was all-in. Not only is it where I store the photos I take on my iPhone, it is where I keep the ones from my digital […]

There is no granular control for Siri Suggestions so they basically function like noise with occasional useful signal. No, I don’t want to call into my work. No, I don’t want to enable work focus. Yes, I would like to open Overcast.

I don’t know how sacrilegious this is, but substituting about one-third of the pecorino Romano in a cacio e pepe with pecorino Toscano is a real good choice, I think.

Sysco was blocked from acquiring U.S. Foods in 2015 for $3.5 billion. Something not in this article but relevant: U.S. Foods returned to the public market shortly thereafter and is now a $20 billion company. https://www.worseonpurpose.com/p/your-dinner-got-worse-on-purpose

@lapcatsoftware@mastodon.social I don’t think it’s a straw man argument at all. The ZDNet review (the first of the ones you linked to) concludes “Ultimately, the Neo is worth it only if you're committed to using it for what it's designed for: everyday tasks, internet browsing, media, and iPhone integrations”, which is basically Gold’s thesis.

People can and should be able to find the limits. The most damning paragraph is the one about Blender on Chromebooks, which reflects the difference between user control and top-down app policy.

Live Rewind Is a Creepy Part of Apple’s Audio Intelligence Suite – Pixel Envy

Apple held its annual September major product rollout today announcing, among other things, updated Apple Watch models with “Audio Intelligence” features. One of those features is “Live Rewind”: A double press of the Digital Crown shows the previous 15 seconds of a conversation as a text snippet, so the user can catch something they may […]

@morrick@appdot.net In theory, yes! In theory, you should review all 1,075 privacy policies before making a decision. Credit where credit is due, though — when I visited, only the “necessary cookies” toggle was on; the others were off, so if I just clicked “agree”, I shouldn’t be opted into all thousand “trusted partners”.

‘Reclaim the Net went even further, claiming the decree represented a “formal, court-enforceable admission: the federal government pressured social media platforms to silence protected speech.”’ (https://www.techdirt.com/2026/03/27/the-missouri-v-biden-settlement-is-a-fake-victory-for-a-case-they-lost/)

The RTN article is attributed to a person who probably does not exist and who used to be represented on the site by an A.I.-generated image. RTN is an InfoWars-like conspiracy site.

The informed read-between-the-lines version of this story is that Alberta separatists obtained a copy of the elector list and illegally used it to build a campaigning tool. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/elections-alberta-electors-database-9.7182667

Elections Alberta granted injunction to pull down electoral list posted publicly by separatist group | CBC News

A court injunction obtained by Elections Alberta on Thursday has forced an Alberta separatist group to shut down an online database built from an electoral list that contained personal information of millions of Albertans.

@lapcatsoftware@mastodon.social Even with more context (which I only stripped for readability), that’s exactly reflective of what Gold is saying! “He knows the consensus. He knows it’s probably not the right tool for everything he wants to do. He has decided he’ll be fine.”

What am I missing here?
