WhenI was younger, I was obsessed with installer makers. Played with them all. InstallerVise, as a JAWS user, was the one that generated my favorite output - even though I had no programming skill to speak of. Well, Freshen gives us a bit of an UX issue. If app has installer, version mismatch when Freshen updates it. And I don't want to just run the installer. ...I may, in fact, be making an MSI Generator that treats Freshen as a first class citizen.

Alright all you Beepers, listen to me! BeepRS 1.0.1 is out. Open Beep and click Check for updates and tell me what happens. Beep itself should tell you what's new. For those who don't know what's going on, I'm going to link you to 1.0 first, so you can test Freshen, the update crate, for which BeepRS is the reference implementation. https://github.com/Nick6489/BeepRS/releases/download/v1.0.0/beeprs-1.0.0-x86_64-pc-windows-msvc.zip

ICYMI: In order to test Freshen, I reimplemented the most complex, thought provoking, amazing title @LWorksGames@tweesecake.social ever produced... Yes, it's BeepRS! Beep, but worse! With all new sounds and dialogue! Genuinely folks, Please download version 1.0 and play it - it has a save feature because the updater test requires files it shouldn't modify. Yes, saved games comes to Beep. https://github.com/Nick6489/BeepRS/releases/download/v1.0.0/beeprs-1.0.0-x86_64-pc-windows-msvc.zip

I wanted to know if Claude Code could, in Rust, write a Petzold-style Notepad that has a few extra features (Markdown HTML preview tabs, a proof of concept direct screen reader abstraction). It made this today. It's bugged (You can't load MetalPad and immediately CTRL+n a second tab) and the bug will not be fixed. This is a proof of concept so I may vibe code bigger things later:

@matt@toot.cafe Sorry, I was opaque. i wanted to know if Rust would efficiently bind to something like Tolk, SRAL, or AO2. SRAL ended up being what I settled on. I did that because to keep with the Petzold Aesthetic, The tab control isn't in the tab order, but I still wanted a screen reader to tell someone that they were switching tabs. I went with SRAL, even though it was a les eficient option than UIA, as a test for future ideas I have.

@matt@toot.cafe I'll answer for @Derek@hkc.social, it's actually a comedic side scroller, not a rhythm game, it's just music themed, kind of a parody of several things. He just happens to have very distinct ideas - which he hasn't shared with me - of what the sounds would do.

Beepers! 1.0.2 is out!

  • Spite found three more voices. There are nine deaths now.
  • @FreakyFwoof@universeodon.com asked for a better shuffle. The next death will not be either of the last two. It can still be rude.
  • @Derek@hkc.social threw a cleaner loop at the developer. The bed comes back around without the old splice. Freshen replaces the bed and the beep.
  • The install button promised to quit. It restarts. The label has been told. You won't see that until 1.0.3's update.

Check for updates!

this won't be the last such Beep test, as we exercise Freshen slowly and methodically. With every new version, Beep wil grow new death sequences so at least you'll have something funny to listen to as we continue testing Freshen update scenarios. Freshen can be found here. https://github.com/Nick6489/freshen

ICYMI: BeepRS, a reimplementation of the classic @LWorksGames@tweesecake.social joke, has released version 1.0.1. However, BeepRS's entire reason for existance is to test Freshen, my update framework inspired by @FreakyFwoof@universeodon.com. To that end, please download 1.0, play a game, then check for updates and tell me what, outside of a mislabeled install and quit button, breaks. https://github.com/Nick6489/BeepRS/releases/download/v1.0.0/beeprs-1.0.0-x86_64-pc-windows-msvc.zip

Today at 2 PM EDT, 19:00 CET, I'm broadcasting on HKC Radio for one of the most special episodes of Sonic Onslaught ever, as I am finally permitted to play you the song I've been producing with Gianluca and @Derek@hkc.social for the band Lyriel. The song is called Echoes, it will be out March 27, and HKC Radio is the first place in the world you'll get to hear it.

@clv1@mastodon.social @WeirdWriter@caneandable.social I tried Delta a few years ago and found hte desktop client very unimpressive and the mobile clients had real access issues around voice messages. Have these things been bettered?

@TheQuinbox@dragonscave.space Heads up. Since switching to Rust, I believe the read only edit field has gotten less responsive with NVDA on very long documents. Moving up and down simply takes longer, and that can effect Say all.

@fastfinge@fed.interfree.ca @amir@dragonscave.space Hey gang. I'm running V17, or trying to, on latest stable NVDA. I have a maximally unhelpful error message. "Could not load Eloquence Synthesizer". Can you tell me how I might figure out why it's barfing?

@kd6cae@dragonscave.space @radio@hkc.social Real simple. You're running upstream. We're not. Apparently, the linger mod we had Claude develop had major issues - but it's kinda necessary for what we do. This codebase is so rickedy and patchy. Eventually, we intend to have a completely rewritten Icecast in Rust, but we're still working some stuff out.

@kev@dragonscave.space The more efficient way to do this would be to simply bundle a jcf and have the installer detect JAWS, but I wonder if @TheQuinbox@dragonscave.space would even want to do that.

@Tamasg@mindly.social @jaybird110127@dragonscave.space Honestly, I don't see myself ever doing anything else with it. THe goals were to determine if Claude understood what the Petzold-style aesthetic was (Knocked it out of the park) and whether Rust had a screen reader abstraction library Claude didn't hate (SRAL).
