@ColinTheMathmo@mathstodon.xyz I was taught another use of the vinculum; when it is placed above a sub-expression, this is to be treated as a bracketed expression. It is commonly used in this way in conjunction with the radical sign, to cover the term or expression whose root is to be evaluated.

@quixoticgeek@social.v.st first time I saw mention of the Westergasfabriek, I thought immediately of the French phrase, "usine à gaz", which more or less means a Heath-Robinson contraption. Dwz something of mind-boggling complexity and not necessarily effective for its purpose.
