RE: https://mathstodon.xyz/@Paul_Taylor/116393432979937863 Google and Microsoft - the global email service duopoly - block other services in the name of "fighting spam". I get it. Spam is a perpetual arms race. But the opaqueness of Google and Microsoft's practices and decades-long predatory self-dealing mean no one trusts them to apply even their own rules. Email still works interoperably. Just about. Getting off US duopolies and monopolies is vital for the future of the internet. So in that way, digital sovereignty is vital to save the internet.

@Paul_Taylor@mathstodon.xyz

I have been using email for 40 years. It used to work.

As an (independent) academic researcher, I need to contact new people, primarily in universities, to ask questions.

I refuse to use Google, Microsoft or the other American IT giants.

But they are increasingly preventing refuseniks from sending email at all.

I know what RFC, DNS, MX, SPF and DMARC mean. My email goes through small British companies with intelligent, friendly and helpful staff.

mxtoolbox.com says that I must have DMARC to send email to M$. So I set it up. I now get a dozen copies of the same report from G or M$ for each email that I send out.

They show that my email gets to G and M$ sites, but then it is marked as spam.

The stupid senior management of numerous universities has surrendered their staff email to M$.

Web searches and AIs preach about spam. I don't send spam - I want to contact my colleagues.

Rumour has it that previously unknown senders are treated with suspicion and their emails are sent to spam. In other words, it is impossible to **initiate** communication with someone.

Let's be blunt about this. They are a mafia that is enforcing an **oligopoly**. It's got nothing to do with reducing spam --- I have no doubt that they let through emails from "trusted partners", ie companies that bribe them enough to send their spam.

The result of this is that it will only be possible to send emails by paying M$ to do it, and then it will only be allowed to express "approved" opinions.

What can we do about this?

At the very least, those of you with senior positions in universities can tell your management to revert to competent standards-based email systems hosted on Linux systems.

RE: @SteveRudolfi@mastodon.social

If one definition of evil is its wanton destruction of everything that is good and whole in the world, then Google is an active agent of evil.

It is setting out to destroy the world wide web and steal the livelihood of everyone who builds and depends on the web.

I honestly don't know how to mobilise normies to care about and stop this evil. It probably seems too niche and incremental until it's too late.

Oh yeah, and in the UK an ex-Google exec is now running the BBC. . .

RE: @mariafarrell@mastodon.social

Well this is admirably concise and direct by Germany's justice ministry.

"Chat control without cause must be taboo in a state governed by the rule of law. Private communication must never be under general suspicion."

THANK YOU. Without Germany's support, Chat Control is dead in Council. For now at least.

Some serious introspection now needed by DG HOME for its antidemocratic draft law and illegal lobbying.

Gods I'm too fucking old and tired to rehearse the 'don't break E2E encryption' debate AGAIN, but here we are. This time the novel twist is 'client side scanning' of every European's device for CSAM, just in case.

I no longer make many arguments on principle. This open letter to the Irish minister who supports pre-emptive surveillance for everyone merely asks him to imagine how he'll feel when, inevitably, the powers are used against him:

I'm publicising this #OpenSource conference because I want to go and can't! And wanted to go last year and couldn't then, too. Cue tiny violins...

The call for papers for Luxembourg's 7 October OS conference is up. They're looking for proposals for 20 min talks due late August:

https://pretalx.com/open-source-conference-luxembourg-2026/cfp

They're looking for talks on OS + public sector (including Open Source and Digital Sovereignty), AI, edtech, cyber security, and OS+cybersecurity+humanitarian work.

CfP closes 23 August

I have the most middle-aged, middle class and frankly blue stocking injury imaginable; did in my back by 1) doing no yoga for months, 2) spending a bank holiday weekend digging the garden after a post-flu winter of inactivity, and 3), the kicker, carrying WAY too heavy a bag of books to and from the library to work (was I thinking the library had run out?).

Margaret Atwood's advice to writers remains the best; move regularly and do exercises to strengthen your back.

I'm told by @Privacymatters@mastodon.social that Germany has stayed strong and blocked the Council majority, so chat control is dead (for now)!

Thank you, everyone who's worked like a dog to stop this nonsense. Again...

Saw this Very Good Boy in our London park walk this morning. He was ever so poignantly watching his human children as they played on the swings and slides in the no-dogs area.

Setters really are such especially sweet family dogs. What am I saying? I love them all.

the encryption that e.g. underlies routing security at multiple protocol layers from secure routing announcements to UDP to TLS and to the whole assurance and certification regime underlying SSL. But honestly this is just a wild guess. Who, that actually knows about (potential widespread future) quantum decryption, is thinking about how it might impact internet infrastrucrure, especially routing? Would be curious and grateful to know more (and where/if I'm wrong). 2/2

FT reports from Munich that some elite-level global south resistance to caring about Russia's invasion of Ukraine stems from their leaders' resentment at rich countries' refusal to share the covid vaccine and to pay climate reparations.

and ... yeah. I get it. We weren't with them so they're not with us.

This is exactly what people meant when they said overcoming drugs company lobbying to share vaccine boosts ALL of our security. We made drugs companies richer and now we're all less safe.

It's not my 'job' to do for someone who's not paying me. I think that way so many tech journalists have of being all 'it's google's world and we just live in it' is a reflexive urge to sound 'positive' and give the reader a 'takeaway' they can use. it's just the bizarre emotional affect of those who cheerfully obey in advance.

@SebastianGallehr@norden.social I certainly hope so, though think about the number of people on Chrome! I think patent registration is a record of exploration and intent, not a business plan or indication of exactly how something may be used. But the direction of travel is clear. tbf I really struggle with firefox for many reasons - the AI move of mozilla, and how so. many. websites. widgets. just don't work with it - and am always on the brink of ditching it. but the alternatives seem bad in other ways!

@dianshuo@mstdn.io Yes. a category error. It just feels like such a fail-state and very now-in-the-UK decision to make. Aligned with making an ex amazon exec the chair of the competition authority. And the 'grown ups' doing it seem to think it's such a smart move, rather than an admission of abject failure and dereliction of their moral duty. It is demoralising that the exact same decisions US tech-worship are made under this government as the last.

I also think that patent registrations aren't plans but possibilities, though the direction of travel and intent are clear. but I wouldn't write off commercial websites as being fair targets. e.g. I buy most gardening stuff, especially plants, online, and from independent retailers, and that sector in the UK is under massive consolidation pressure which would only be intensified by this kind of thing. tbf I don't use google's browser or search engine.
