1st, it's totally possible to travel by train further than you would first think. 2nd, night trains rule. Treat yourself to a comfortable option, it's probably cheaper than a hotel night + a train ticket. 3rd, more academics should consider the possibility. The most common reaction I get is surprise, from people who did not even consider the possibility. Inside Europe there are often more train options than you might think.

Something I love about engineering/physics/CS culture is that almost every intellectual resource is available for free. There's a real presumption of non-gatekeeping that is, in my experience, not present in other fields.

@mbaudis@genomic.social @kofanchen@biologists.social Indeed, there's some privilege that I use: no young kids, live in center of Europe, have funding to pay expensive train tickets. If those of us who have this privilege don't use it, there is no chance to change the system. And many people are in a similar situation to me yet will fly. In this case, Lausanne-Glasgow is a long day, but just 1 day. So keep the flights for those who have no choice, but those who can should make an effort.

"we should start to stigmatise X usage for what it really is: a small and selfish part in making the world measurably worse. You are not special. Interesting study of the performance of phylogenetic models for gene expression evolution, although they seem to have only investigated single-optimum OU models, which IMO limits conclusions on datasets with orthologs and paralogs. (Indeed they find poor performance for our 2016 dataset testing the ortholog conjucture.)

Evaluating the Performance of Widely Used Phylogenetic Models for Gene Expression Evolution

Phylogenetic comparative methods are increasingly used to test hypotheses about the evolutionary processes that drive divergence in gene expression among species. However, it is unknown whether the distributional assumptions of phylogenetic models designed for quantitative phenotypic traits are realistic for expression data and importantly, the reliability of conclusions of phylogenetic comparative studies of gene expression may depend on whether the data is well-described by the chosen model. Swiss universities warn People’s Party ‘10 million’ plan could harm research

The higher education association Swissuniversities warns against weakening Switzerland as a centre of education. The SVP initiative "No 10 million Swiss!" creates chaos in legislation, unsettles partners and weakens the economy and universities. There would only be losers.

Plan U: Universal access to scientific and medical research via funder preprint mandates

Preprint servers are a low-cost mechanism for providing free access to research findings, and can also significantly accelerate research itself by making results available immediately. This Perspective article proposes that funding agencies should mandate preprint posting to ensure universal free access to the world’s scientific output, as well as stimulate new peer review and research evaluation initiatives.
