publishing apps as free software, and not making them mandatory by offering alternate access to services, would go a long way in weakening the dominance and lock-in of the mobile operating system duopoly governments should go a step further and actively promote the adoption of a sovereign platform, instead of further entrenching the dependency on this duopoly CC: @Gina@fosstodon.org

you may also argue that it is absolutely unreasonable for foreign companies to be entitled to decide who can or cannot get government services, by allowing or refusing accounts that enable the installation of the apps required to get those services, or even to get information about the services. promoting and favoring platforms that enable foreign companies to decide who gets to be a full citizen, and who gets marginalized, and to set the terms and conditions for the enjoyment of digital citizenship, is a disservice to the citizenship, and an unacceptable subjugation. since when is open souce even concerned with ethics? free software is, but we do understand that failing to respect others' freedoms is just one out of many ways in which something could be unethical, and when the actions are carried out through software, the ethics failing is not of the software proper, but of that who controls it to behave unethically. so maybe you're sort of right after all

quando eu jogava xadrez, competitivamente, me chamavam de atleta. estranhei de início, depois acostumei. como maratonista de programação, tampouco precisava de muito preparo físico. mas há outros esportes que precisam mas pode não parecer. pra pilotar carro, por exemplo, ouvi dizer que precisa de um baita preparo físico. até pra alguns jogos eletrônicos precisa de resistência. because it's not software, it's a service, thus it's delivered to you under someone else's control at every use; because those who control it will twiddle it so as to better serve themselves instead of you; because they profit from ads, the more ads they get to show you in your search, the better off they are, so it is in their interest to degrade the search results; because they know they can enshittify it to no end and most victims won't leave.

sounds like software distributors now get to experience what most users used to experience: all of a sudden a problem that someone else knew about but we didn't needs to be figured out and dealt with urgently. disclosure procedures made the situation more comfortable for the distributors, but not so much for the users, who got the whole story at once and had to react promptly, instead of as a developing story. maybe this new development levels the playing field a little, making things really inconvenient for everyone. that sort of moral justice is not much of a consolation, alas 😕 CC: @gregkh@social.kernel.org @wdormann@infosec.exchange @Viss@mastodon.social

as long as governments mandate user-controlling apps, such as age-verification ones that require such remote-controlled operating systems, google's and apple's dominions will remain supported and required by governments, rather than challenged for citizens' sake. as long as such features as biometrics and DRM are allowed to be used to serve remote interests through users' digital devices, taking precedence over users' interests and control over users, remote interests will keep on abusing and normalizing them, and solidifying the need for such remotely-controlled devices, making it even harder for individuals and societies to escape them even through democratic governments. if we control the server that sends javascript to our browser, there's no loss of freedom involved, so no objection from me. holding issues and PRs locally sounds great, I look forward to it. I'm curious about the data model that will enable seamless merges as multiple users update issues without coordination.
