Remember kids, if you take Cypro, also take your 100-200mcg[1] oral B12 supplement daily! Unfortunately, a can of monster energy only contains 13mcg so it's nowhere near enough. @calcifer@masto.hackers.town I remember taking some light interest in lock picking when I was a kid, I got some very low security locks open with paperclips but ran into the problem of paperclips not being rigid enough to tension locks that were any level of serious about their security, and didn't have access to any better tools.

Bambulab is the perfect example of a dipshit company taking all the openly available prior art and then trying to privatize the shit out of it, making random patents around it to stop anyone else from competing when they couldn't exist without the previously existing open ecosystem.

They are now
suing someone for the crime of forking an AGPL project

It's really a systemic issue, because the patent system's exclusive purpose is enforcing monopolies and it never helps actual innovators unlike its stated goal. And intellectual property law is a scourge on society.

I will however also blame everyone who kept buying bambulab printers after it was clear they will pull as much anticonsumer anticompetitive bullshit as they can get away with. The locked down firmware scandal should have been enough to never buy anything from that company. Instead they're thriving while burning down the ecosystem that allowed them to come into existence. And consumers give zero fucks about it despite alternatives existing.

If it's fine to shit on tesla owners for ignoring what elon musk has been doing with the profits from the company, I think it's only fair to apply the same logic to 3d printers where bambulab is suing out of existence the people that made this tech accessible for hobbyists in the first place.

Sooo the alarmist takes about Bitwarden closing down the source code a while back were entirely warranted. I mean, they did it quietly too while still advertising as open source. They are not open source anymore, at least the core API code is not.

@ifixcoinops@retro.social this reminds me of how EPUB3 is basically "what if we made an e-book format known for reflowable text, except we added fixed layout text, the entirety of HTML5, JavaScript and some other bullshit that requires you to run an extended version of chromium to implement?" Which is like, how the fuck did they lose the plot so bad, no EPUB reader that isn't a web browser supports this shit spec as a result so it's kinda dead. Entirely because instead of focusing on being a reasonably sized, possible to understand, possible to implement specification with the narrow goal of being very good at reflowable text ebooks (in direct opposition to PDF), they decided it must do everything. Why in the fuck?

@Nine@chitter.xyz @ifixcoinops@retro.social to be fair 20mb is still more than enough for a site as long as you have no (large) media in it webp can crunch down images to mind boggling sizes much better than JPEG could, you can have a shared CSS file for the whole website, and you can fit quite a lot of HTML and text in that space

@Nine@chitter.xyz @ifixcoinops@retro.social that's with basic size optimizations, I could do better but I didn't see a point in trying. And then there's some very specific pages where I have unreasonably huge images and perhaps I should have thumbnails for them because 8MB per image is kinda unreasonable. Basically I listened to the people screaming about how JavaScript is the root of all evil and have some very… creative CSS hacks for basic features (and ended up adding a sprinkle of JS anyway because turns out my CSS hacks fucked with accessibility in annoying ways. It's still technically usable without JS but with a few UX papercuts like the image viewer accidentally blocking you from downloading an image when it's zoomed in. And the tab-order being weird and nonsensical in some cases.). Which means adding thumbnails in a reasonable way would be pretty hard actually!

GNOME vs Linux Mint conflict

Oh the GNOME Calendar vs Linux Mint situation is so much worse than I thought from the GNOME perspective rant blog post.

The key thing that makes me say this? The existence of LibAdapta. Mint maintains an entire ass fork of LibAdwaita whose sole purpose is theming GTK apps to look more at home within Mint's look.

Keeping GNOME branding and support links on something this deeply altered is such a middle finger, especially when GNOME explicitly asked before to not repackage their apps with custom theming because it points angry users of software far altered from what they ship toward them.

It used to cost I think something like $20/year, now it's ~$32/year, going up to ~$36/year. Can't exactly trust them to provide any sort of stable service when they keep increasing prices by like $4/year .eu would be interesting if not for the fact that if your country decides to leave, suddenly you apparently just lose the right to renew the registration. So, that leaves .pl, which is managed by some Polish government entity, probably will forever, and which I shouldn't ever lose the right to renew because the country can't just randomly revoke my only citizenship.

@mjdxp@labyrinth.zone you using Linux doesn't mean you agree with Torvalds or any of the other maintainers with harmful views. It doesn't make you evil. Much like I wouldn't blame someone using Adobe or Microsoft software to make a living for "supporting an evil corporation", when they don't have alternatives that will reasonably accomodate their workflow. You understand the issue and acknowledge it, and you complain, but if it's not something you can do much else about, then it's not worth your time, you can put effort elsewhere where you can make a difference.

@mjdxp@labyrinth.zone ruined feels like an exaggeration considering that my experience using distros that have been getting a lot of flak for AI use (Fedora) has been extremely smooth and largely issue free recently. Systemd also keeps on just working. And the desktop experience is getting better, which is the opposite of what I've experienced with commercial software that keeps degrading nowadays. The one time I'd agree would be rsync perhaps, of course the slop was the culmination of an overworked maintainer with no funding that saw a way to potentially lessen the load and took it. The software became untrustworthy, but I wouldn't give the maintainer flak for it due to the circumstances. A part of the solution to these issues will be recognizing why people use AI and hitting the problem at the source. And those issues go deep into the politics of open source and society at large. There's a significant practical difference between software where the maintainers use AI to review PRs or look for bugs and software where the code is slop that noone understands. They're still some level of morally in the wrong, considering the AI use contributes to the bad externalities, but the software they're developing is affected much less negatively than in the case of vibe coded software.

thinking about how I now find it almost impossible to find information about a lot of topics online search engines are shit, google has gotten so bad it's not even funny, marginalia sometimes works but doesn't have a big enough index yet sometimes google will give you something usable if you swap to AI mode, but that's wrong half the time too so you're gambling for a link to a useful source it feels like a skill I took my whole life to develop suddenly lost all value because the tools I relied on have rapidly degraded over the past few years
