There are four schools of thought that each have their own ideas on how scientific peer review can be improved. Wolfgang Kaltenbrunner, @stephenpinfield@mstdn.social, Helen Woods and I have revised our paper on this topic https://doi.org/10.31235/osf.io/v8ghj. We have also created a visualization that summarizes the key tensions between the four schools. We are grateful to the reviewers of our paper for their very useful feedback.

I just declined to join ISSI 2023 program committee. The conference "will make limited use of online presentations – only for those who cannot attend legally or physically for whatever reason or who have disability making it difficult to attend" https://cns-iu.github.io/workshops/2023-07-02_issi/. I believe conferences need to do a better job in terms of promoting inclusiveness and carbon reduction. Researchers who cannot or do not want to travel should be able to participate virtually. @crsugimoto@sciences.social @lariviev@mastodon.social @neesjanvaneck@akademienl.social
Very useful discussion of differences in copyright legislation in different countries and the implications for text and data mining, in particular for research purposes. https://doi.org/10.1126/science.add6124
Quantitative Science Studies @QSS_ISSI@scicomm.xyz can now also be found on #Mastodon. Interesting resemblance between ongoing debate about social media infrastructures (#Twitter, #Mastodon, ...) and discussions about scholarly infrastructures taking place in the field of quantitative science studies and in @QSS_ISSI@scicomm.xyz!
"My local council doesn’t bother telling me when a road is open and I am able to drive down it. They only bother to erect a sign when it’s a dead end, a cul de sac, or no entry. Surely the world should by now have shifted to expecting OA without it having to be specifically labelled?" https://www.coalition-s.org/blog/open-access-is-dead-long-live-open-access/
"Many are frustrated at the inertia in the current system ... What we are doing at @eLife@scicomm.xyz is creating an alternative publishing model and providing an alternative output that can be used in research assessment. We are convinced that others will take up this model over time." Indeed, I'm sure others will take similar steps. The developments in this space in the coming years are going to be extremely interesting! https://upstream.force11.org/elife-reviewed-preprints-interview-with-fiona-hutton/ @mfenner@mastodon.social
How do different bibliographic databases (@crossref@mastodon.online, Dimensions, Scopus and Web of Science) handle funding acknowledgments? @CWTS@akademienl.social colleagues Dan Gibson, Jeroen van Honk and Clara Calero illustrate this using a case study. https://www.leidenmadtrics.nl/articles/acknowledging-the-difficulties-a-case-study-of-a-funding-text @leidenmadtrics@akademienl.social
DocMaps to expand to increase the visibility and machine-readability of preprint evaluations https://docmaps.knowledgefutures.org/pub/eyp3ckeo/release/1. "A more diverse system of evaluation offers many advantages over traditional peer review, but adoption is hindered by technical barriers to participation ... The DocMaps project has been working to overcome these barriers by providing an extensible, standards-based, and machine-readable framework. This framework fully represents metadata relating to preprint evaluation"
@smart314@mastodon.green In the closing poll the #RecognizingPreprintReview participants just expressed overwhelming support for some of the key ingredients of the #RecordOfVersions. Preprints, journal articles and peer reviews all need to be fully connected to each other, both for humans and for machines. There's a lot of important work to be done! @ASAPbio@mas.to
@rodrigocostas1@mastodon.social @QSS_ISSI@scicomm.xyz Thanks Rodrigo for taking the lead in undoing the injustice done to our colleagues Vít Macháček and Martin Srholec. Like the other signatories of the letter, I believe Scientometrics made mistakes in the way this case was handled. Importantly, however, the source of the problem is the very problematic behavior of Frontiers. Those not familiar with the background of this case may want to read the following piece in #RetractionWatch https://retractionwatch.com/2021/09/07/authors-object-after-springer-nature-journal-cedes-to-publisher-frontiers-demand-for-retraction/ @ivanoransky@birdsite.tcjc.uk.

In this Friday's @CWTS@akademienl.social seminar Soohong Eum will discuss his research on (mis)alignment between research funding and research outputs. Soohong will present the results of a case study of green energy technology in South Korea. Join us virtually at 15h CET using the MS Teams link provided at https://www.cwts.nl/seminars/announcements?article=n-s2w2c4.
Very much looking forward to the Research Intelligence Network Netherlands (RINN) symposium this Thursday at the University of Groningen https://www.researchintelligence.nl/activities/. I will give a talk about the rise of preprinting and the implications for research intelligence. The growth in preprinting is a critical development that has major consequences for the way research results are communicated. Registration for the symposium is still possible, both for physical and for virtual participation. @CWTS@akademienl.social
@NathanHarvey@kolektiva.social @stephenpinfield@mstdn.social Thank you, Nathan, it seems we are attracted to the same school! I appreciate your suggestions. There's definitely a need to critically scrutinize the ideas of the Democracy & Transparency school. I expect this will help to improve the way in which these ideas are implemented and the ideals of democracy and transparency in peer review are realized.
@Aschniedermann@fediscience.org @stephenpinfield@mstdn.social Thanks Alexander, and yes, the number of initiatives and other developments in this space is quite overwhelming. I hope our paper is helpful by offering a structured perspective on the many different discussions that are taking place.
