My talk is about seeing through the noise — the intersection of people, data, patterns, and intentional AI. In a moment when AI is everywhere and loud, let's slow down and look beneath the surface.

Monday at #UNOpenSourceWeek I co-facilitated a session on AI tools in #opensource. The conversations were hard to stop at the end!
The themes are similar across audiences: AI shifts workload rather than reducing it. and Trust is eroding. BUT guardrails and tools such as https://AGENTS.md, CodeRabbit, and repo scaffolding tools are emerging.
The number that stuck for me was real cost: a $200/month subscription == ~$15k/month in actual costs (maybe more). A blog coming soon.
Made it to Long Beach just in time for the start of #pyconus !! I can't wait to see all of my friends and colleagues!! This is always my favorite meeting.

I am honored to be representing @sovtechfund@mastodon.social again this year at #unopensource week.
When teaching ecologists to code, I wrote pages of scripts to wrangle messy data.
Then I packaged them.
Result? 40+ researchers went from pages of code to single lines. More time for science, less for debugging.
That's the power of #OpenSource packaging.
Teaching Python packaging Nov 6 so more scientists can build reusable tools.

When I learned to code it wasn’t pretty. I wrote (messy) MATLAB scripts that somehow worked (on my computer only😅) and took hours to run. I had no training, no roadmap — just #science curiosity & a friend who helped me get started.
I founded @pyOpenSci@fosstodon.org to support researchers like me create #openscience. I get to teach workshops on all things #python #opensource so that others don't have to learn the hard way. 💛
Community makes the impossible feel doable. We go further when we learn together.

I'm working with friends to rebuild the all-contributors bot maintainer team. We're discovering the hard way that accounts/workflows aren't documented.
If you're maintaining a project:
✅ Create DEVELOPMENT.md from day one
✅ Document all accounts & access
✅ Use shared accounts when possible
