What It Actually Takes to Read Music Without Sight (and What AI Can Help Solve)

How accessible scores and Braille music make concert prep possible, and why reliable tools today matter more than AI’s promised future.

I have what I find to be a helpful update for my Image Description Toolkit out. As a reminder, this is a series of applications that allow you to use various AI tools to generate descriptions for large batches of images. (1/4)

Quickmail 0.7.8.1 is available with fixes for attachments not working properly to save or open, shift+F10 not working the first time it is pressed within the app and more logging of what the program is doing behind the scenes if you run with /debug. https://github.com/kellylford/QuickMail/releases/tag/v0.7.8.1 Pending any large issues, this will be the last release for a few days as I transition to a different install technology that will support automatic updating and add additional test coverage with such a change.

I know a number of people asked me how my basic GHManage tool compares to FastGH. From my quick trial, FastGH has a UI experience that is further along and far more functionality and seems like a good program. It appears the project accepts contributions so I'll likely see about contributing the few things I found that GHManage does that I don't find in FastGH just now. Like I said, my web search didn't turn anything up but clearly it missed this program.

One cool feature I added is whether you are viewing an issue, a commit, a branch, a workflow or pretty much anything else, pressing f on that item makes it a favorite. You can pick your list of favorites just like any other repo and then arrow through those items and they can be from various repos. If I've missed the party and all this functionality is already available in a user friendly app (not a CLI or web app, feel free to let me know. Not looking to reinvent the wheel as the saying goes.

New in QuickMail 0.8.37: you decide what a message list row says. View > Message List Fields lets you check the pieces you want — sender, subject, date, unread, attachments, source folder — and move each one with Alt+Up and Alt+Down. A preview updates as you go. "Tell me about unread but never say read" is now a setting rather than a wish. Messages, conversation groups and sender groups each keep their own arrangement.

You need to have the GH command line tool on your system and authorized for my app to work. My app also has some interactive functions for repos where you have access. For example, you can change the state of issues, comment on them, schedule workflows to run, download artifacts from a completed run and more. You can also provide the URL to any public repo and use the app functionality there.

I'm also not looking to replace tools like GitHub Desktop here. I made this mostly to help with my own productivity and will continue to tinker with it. Issues, contributions and such are welcome. I have no grand plan for this app though beyond just adding things as I need them or someone asks. And again, if I'm missing something let me know but I can say in the couple days I've been using this, it has saved me loads of time already.

@jonathan859@someplace.social I used code signing from Microsoft Azure portal, which is available for $10 a month. Getting signed up and authenticated was quite a hassle especially the ID verification process, but I’m hopeful overtime as my apps are downloaded. This will make it easier for users.

I'm far more inclined to contribute ideas, if not code, to another project here versus create the same things over. With my Quickmail, WeatherFast, Sports Scores and Image Description Toolkit projects, I have more than enough irons in the fire as it were already. Like I said when I mentioned my small GH tool, I could have been late to the party and in this case I probably was.

The University of Washington has an opening for a Director of Digital Accessibility. This is one of those great jobs that do not come along very often to have a big impact at a place that is already one of the leaders in accessibility. (1/2)

A big, big warning if you use Claude or OpenAI models. I've done my best to ensure token use here is reasonable but given these services cost, please absolutely check your own account and the token use being logged by the app. I'll continue to refine my prompts and the way I handle images to maximize description quality and minimize cost but please do not start a large batch of images without testing one or two first.

Version 0.8.1 for Quickmail was pushed out earlier today via the automatic update process with an improvement for a possible hang in the app when replying to email. I won't spam my timeline with every update or users who use the update service with constant updates but wanted to mention this one because it is the first actual update to use the new process. My goal, pending any critical issues, is to release a formal build around once a week while the app is in active development.

The other good news that will hopefully be helpful over time, it that my Windows apps will now be code signed. Eventually you should stop getting the notifications from Windows about an unknown application.

QuickMail 0.8.37 adds watched conversations. Press Ctrl+Shift+W on any message and its whole thread is watched from then on. The Watched Conversations folder collects every message in it, from every folder and every account — including the replies that have not arrived yet, which join on their own. A flag marks a message you already have. A watch is a standing subscription to the conversation. Notifications for replies are optional.

The release notes have many more details on all the enhancements, fixes and more. Again, this will not be delivered via automatic updates yet. Given the amount of change, I opted for those who might want to try things and share any feedback before turning on the automatic update.

@serrebi@serrebiradio.com Also, can you try adding —online to the command that launches Quickmail once to see if this still happens. That won’t try syncing any mail.

The toolkit has two apps. ImageDescriber is a full UI experience for describing individual images or big batches. There is also a CMD tool, IDT, that you can use. There is a user guide linked with more details and I'll be creating more documentation and obviously refining the experiences. This is a beta and creating Mac software is new to me. The apps are both written in Python with AI assistance and at least here running well. I know famous last words. Issues at https://github.com/kellylford/Image-Description-Toolkit/issues

Quickmail 0.8.33 with comprehensive calendar support for Google, iCloud and Microsoft is available. Please see the full release notes for this and previous releases at https://github.com/kellylford/QuickMail/releases I've obviously tried to ensure the calendar support both from usability and appointment management perspectives is high quality but this is a large area so I suspect there are issues.

Facebook's Muse has certainly been a bit of a spark in the AI world this week. What's the long term play here for them to pay for all the AI functions Muse is offering?

Sweet! I just connected Apple Foundation Models and Intelligence to my Image Description Toolkit Mac app. On an M1 Mac with Mac OS 27, I'm getting local descriptions in about 6 seconds an image. I’ll be releasing an update shortly.

@NikJov@mastodon.social @jscholes@dragonscave.space This is such a loss of functionality and annoyance throughout Windows. I've had this conversation with developers and program managers so many times and every time an app switches to a new framework we have to start over.
