Should you ever be looking for information on a weird old plug or socket, or are just interested in such things, the online "Museum of Plugs and Sockets" is one of those sites that makes the Internet seem like less of a terrible mistake than usual.

https://plugsocketmuseum.nl/

The page on old British "BS 546" is unmatched, in particular: https://plugsocketmuseum.nl/OldBritish1.html

Picked up a fairly nice-looking Honeywell HEPA air filter from a charity shop. When I got home, I discovered it didn't work, and smelled strongly of "magic smoke".

I could have done the reasonable thing, and just chucked it. But did I do that? Of course not. Instead, I invested many hours of time and lost sleep towards turning it into a cloud-free "smart" device.

Really though, it's an excuse to re-learn PCB design after a 20+ year hiatus.

If you have an Aclara I-210 "smart" electrical meter on the side of your house, like I do, the NY State Dept of Public Service (NYS utility regulator) has done you a favor, and put the entire operator's manual for the meter online, despite the manufacturer's protestations about its proprietary-ness in the front matter.

Among other things it contains a handy key to the physical display, which I've always wanted.

Really wish that there was a way to define Pip-based dependencies from inside a #Python script, without the overhead of creating a whole Poetry project (or requirements.txt or any of the other dozen ways of packaging Python "projects").

Mostly because I don't want to create a "project"! I just want a simple, standalone, *one file* script… but you can really only do that if you stick exclusively to the standard library.

Why is "import pip.whatever" not a thing?

Who set the default #Debian networking timeout to 5 minutes and 3 seconds?

What's the extra 3 seconds for?

Randomly found a nice little site that's still using Tripod web hosting:
https://cheatthezone.tripod.com/wireless/colinear.html

It seems to be the canonical page that most other instructions / YouTube videos / etc. refer to when describing DIY co-linear antenna construction, too.

@rsalas@hachyderm.io @john@sauropods.win It appears that there's already an ongoing effort to bring a #Mastodon-like UI to the #Pleroma backend, at least if I am understanding this project's goals correctly: https://lily-is.land/infra/glitch-lily/ I feel like I'm going to need a quick reference guide to keep track of the various software forks that have sprung up, though: #Glitch, #Hometown, #Akkoma, Pleroma Rebased, etc.

@pammystarr @katedegerdon @john That already exists: https://masto.host offers managed Mastodon hosting ($40/mo for ~500 users, seems a bit high but not unreasonable to me), but right now they are so swamped they're not taking new subscriptions. Heck of a problem to have as a business. I do have some questions about how well Mastodon (the mainline server) scales, and if there are opportunities for optimization that could make managed hosting cheaper per user.

Masto.host was built from the ground up to make running a Mastodon instance easy.

@piccolbo @tomat0 @john @rsalas @pammystarr @katedegerdon I'm a bit unclear on this as well, but I *think* that users on the mutually-blocking instances won't see posts originating from the other instance, so they end up with different threads. Not sure how else it would work, TBH. Sidebar: I noticed today (when viewing one of @john's posts from SDF, vs a friend using vmst.io), that we were seeing different versions of the thread, presumably due to delays in propagation across the network.

@john This is Reddit gossip so take it with a very large chunk of salt, but there are claims that:

The founder of Pleroma, Lain, programed Pleroma to be harder to block from other instances than a comparable Mastodon Instance. Those blocked Pleroma instance Admins tell me their posts sometimes get through to the Mastodon servers.

Source: https://old.reddit.com/r/Pleroma/comments/yu8xof/pleromas_rebased_fork_vs_akkoma_fork/

I don't know what that means from a technical perspective, though. How is an instance "hard to block"? 🤷‍♂️

@admin @p @john Without access to the code I'm speculating, but from the docs I don't think "un-blockable messages" is how it shakes out. It appears that Revolver has a single, distributed DB with content split across its nodes (strong whiffs of FreeNet!), but at the edges it exposes an ActivityPub-compat LitePub endpoint, to interop with rest of Fedi. It also promises content filtering of what each node propagates. A Masto admin would treat that LitePub endpoint like any other instance.

@Danhon@mastodon.cloud Not sure why you'd want the explicit subdomain. We don't usually have "user@mail.domain.tld" addresses anymore; "user@domain.tld" works fine. DNS SRV records would be the obvious way to point users/clients to a specific server (like MX records do for mail, but more flexible).

@raymaccarthy@mastodon.ie @dec23k@mastodon.ie Really interesting! In the US, un-metered electric service is very rare, to my knowledge. Possibly street lights in some places, if they were installed back in the pre-deregulation days. Maybe very heavy industry. But my local gas company has a line on the bill for "unmetered gas light" service, which are charged a flat rate, if you have them. I suspect it's for outdoor gas lights that tap directly into the street mains. #infrastructure

@twofirstnames@mstdn.social @Danhon@mastodon.cloud That seems like a very roundabout way to do what DNS SRV records are designed for. You can add as many SRV records to your domain as you need, each pointing to a server (and port!) that hosts the service. They also have a mechanism for specifying "priority" and "weight", for load balancing and failover. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SRV_record
