@juandesant@mathstodon.xyz

@scalzi I’m afraid I’m old enough to have seen Star Wars when it debuted… and the fact that it was labelled as Episode IV was always in my mind… so it was Star Wars (A New Hope) for me. (Of course, it was not Star Wars here; it was “La Guerra de las Galaxias”, which is even more powerful 😉)

Replying to

@ahimsa_pdx@disabled.social OK, in both cases they are light reflected from interplanetary dust essentially in the disc where planetary formation happened in our solar system. The main difference is that you can see that reflected light either at an angle from the sun, and then it’s zodiacal light, or back reflected directly from the sun behind the observer. In any case, it’s always material (mostly) in the plane of the ecliptic, which means you have the constellations of the Zodiac in that shine, regardless of mode.

Replying to

@ianbetteridge you stuck the landing of this piece, well done! «The technology that displaces the worker and the proposal that makes that displacement politically tolerable are products of the same class of actors, emerging in the same news cycle. That is not a coincidence of timing. It is the shape of the new economy that they want to see emerge. The Roman grain dole didn't give the plebs more power. It made them manageable. What is being proposed now by the tech bros carries the same structural logic: not the reversal of dispossession, but baking it into the structure of society. The question of who owns the machines — and who should — still goes unasked.»

Replying to

@shana I think the reverse take is more powerful: some loops can be avoided if you have a closed mathematical form for them. And as someone else noted when quoting this post, for loops imply an ordering, the mathematical operation does not. Plus, loops are just one form: generators are another, and the fact that \[\sum_{i=0}^{m} f(i) = \sum_{i=0}^{n-1} f(i) + f(n) + \sum_{i=n+1}^{m} f(i) \] means that generators are really another option.
