for whoever needs to hear this: you're not alone. i'm not vibecoding any of the software i write. i'm writing it by hand, but i've leveled up my emacs with eglot/lsp. i'm modernizing my stacks and use languages with excellent compilers. i think about how to do more with less. i'm trying to combine the best human-written libraries and modules and assemble them with minimal boilerplate. i enjoy reading your manuals and references. i believe in robust, secure, human-written software.

This. Don't let them tell you that the end-goal is to write as many lines of code per day as possible. The end goal is you, your enjoyment of the craft and the connection to other people that you make through it. Improve yourself and help others to do the same.

@mntmn@mastodon.social Well, it "works". It's just not "done". The prototype can be seen in the photos. There is a 3D printed stem which you stick through a hole in the keyboard PCB. The trackpoint sensor can be found in different varieties online. Some of the keycaps needed to be modified of course. Remaining problem is the fragility of the stem which is made of PLA. A thinner stem would be better and would avoid having to file some material away at the corner of the switches as well.

@mntmn@mastodon.social Other parents hand their children their smartphone. I just handed my daughter the Pocket Reform streaming some video over sshfs from the local NAS. No smartphone needed anymore and so much more fun this way. You can all imagine how cute it looks to see tiny human in front of tiny laptop. 🥰

@mntmn@mastodon.social You might want to get in touch with the Debian #Mobian team for this. They are running Debian with gnome as the foundation on devices like the PinePhone, PineTab and Librem 5. I'm sure they'd be excited to help with adding the MNT Vector to the list. They are in #mobian-dev on OFTC which is bridged to #mobian-dev:matrix.org

@albertcardona@mathstodon.xyz In a world where just throwing the grant proposal into an LLM becomes the norm *you* are of course also no longer needed. The grant applicant can have an LLM generate them the same text that you would've generated them. And if they know that's the game, why would they hand-write their grant proposal by hand at all?
I agree to all your points and applaud your idealism. 👏

Now that @mntmn@mastodon.social boosted this post, let me also add the missing credits: minute routed the traces of the Reform Keyboard V4 specifically to make it possible to drill a hole at the right spot without damaging the traces when I asked them for it. It is also thanks to MNT that I have this keyboard without switches for performing this experiment. Both keyboard as well as the trackpoint module are recognized via USB and work as expected.

@alisynthesis @mntmn I feel we need to somehow stuff the pocket reform mainboard into a classic reform case to have the classic reform have feature parity compared to the pocket reform (not just because of display port alt mode over usb-c but also because the pocket has wifi, bluetooth and umts with rk3588...)

@gkrnours@mastodon.gamedev.place @eliasp@mastodon.social @codemonkeymike@fosstodon.org @frameworkcomputer@fosstodon.org And in contrast to a Framework computer, in case MNT ever does something you sincerely dislike so much that you never want to buy anything from them again, you can *literally* just fork their work and build your own. This is not possible with a Framework computer as many seem to be realizing only now. Framework never was the open hardware that many advertised it for. The MNT Reform on the other hand has been that from the beginning.

@mntmn@mastodon.social The classic Reform and Pocket Reform silkscreens call it the "motherboard", respectively. Intentional change to "mainboard" for the Reform Next? For example the handbook has 1 mention of mainboard (accidental?) and 65 mentions of motherboard. I used to look up which one was the right term when talking about it in irc.

@tj @alisynthesis @mntmn More seriously I am hoping that we can re-use the Reform Next mainboard in the classic Reform. It already has support for eight LiFePo4 batteries, for the panel and since the left/right port board are separate you could create a port board with full size ethernet for example. :)

@bwh@tech.lgbt It's worse than that. For example to simulate "dpkg-buildpackage -A" you need "sbuild --no-arch-any --arch-all" (so one flag in d-b translates to two in sbuild). I would've liked to use the --build option from dpkg-buildpackage in sbuild but unfortunately sbuild already uses --build to mean "build architecture" 🙁

@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz Also to expand on what @0x9E01@snug.moe said earlier about rubber dome versus mechanical switches and injection moulding versus CNC aluminum: At some point @mntmn@mastodon.social said that one of their goals when designing products is: if MNT ever goes away, you should still be able to make the hardware. @jacqueline@chaos.social showed that it's indeed possible to build the hardware just from the design files. If framework goes away, nobody can re-create their laptops.I'd certainly buy a Reform made by cool tech zone! :D

@hrw@society.oftrolls.com These guys? :) The chip on the other board (the big green one) is indeed able to interface with them and makes them available to me as a USB HID but I'm unable to source them. There are many variants of these out there. The two on the photo are identical electrically but the physical sensor part differs. I have two more and none of them looks identical...

I sincerely hope that you find fun and enjoyment doing other things in the future. Moin @hrw@society.oftrolls.com 👋 I'm familiar with the piercing stem idea. I read it here: https://github.com/alonswartz/trackpoint#q-what-should-i-use-for-the-trackpoint-stemstick Unfortunately my sensor board does not have a flat surface but comes with a small steel stick itself and gluing steel stick on steel stick is not ideal. So I started experimenting with PLA but also have a small aluminum cylinder here into which i might be able to drill a hole of the right size... Experiments... :) Alternative: I have to source a different sensor board.

@bwh@tech.lgbt Both positive and negative options override the default or whatever the user set in the sbuild config, yes.
Yes, I think it would be confusing to overload the meaning of --build. On the other hand, I also got confused in the past by --build being the option to set the build architecture. It makes me think of "building stuff" instead of the architecture of the same name...
I'll keep thinking about this. I'd like to improve this somehow in sbuild.
