German Federal Government spending on Microsoft *licenses*: 481.4 million euros (2025), 347.7 million (2024), 274.1 million (2023)
How much #freeSoftware development could be funded with that money? Now, scale up to all public administrations in Germany. Now, scale up to #EU (and you could go on scaling up).
Does the current situation make sense from a purely economic point of view? #publicMoneyPublicCode
Trying vocalinux for speech to text in my Debian-testing box. Works like a charm. Just type CTRL twice, speak, CTRL twice again, and text is produced.
Works with all applications. Recognizes Spanish and English without apparent problems. Everything running on my laptop, no external model used. Works on CPU.
For me, this is going to be a game changer.

The family of #freeSoftware software suites for EU public administrations is growing:

* Mijn Bureau (NL): https://minbzk.github.io/mijn-bureau/
This reminds me of the situation in Spain 20 years ago: the blossoming of Linux-based distros (Linex, MAX, Guadalinex, Lliurex, and many others) promoted by regional public administrations, that we're discussing in the #LaEraDeLasDistros podcast (in Spanish) https://laeradelasdistros.es/

The USA Supreme Court: Federal agencies are no longer independent
Max Schrems: “Even in the European Commission's logic, the basis for any EU-US data transfer deal is dead. We call upon the Commission to start an orderly exit from the US cloud – which is not easy, but unfortunately unavoidable. The Commission built a legal house of cards under industry pressure. Now that it clearly collapses, it has to take responsibility.”
More and more concerns about EU's dependency on USA tech. #freeSoftware could be a part of the solution

HuggingFace: We detected and responded to an intrusion into part of our production infrastructure. This one was different from anything we had handled before in one important way: it was driven, end to end, by an autonomous AI agent system - and we detected and dissected it largely with AI of our own

I got carried away and asked OpenCode to “translate” MSDOS-1.0 (originally written in 8086 Assembly) not only into C, but also into Rust and Ada. I found the comparison between the versions in the three languages—and between any of them and the original Assembly code—to be intriguing and interesting.
