I prefer watching youtube in the evening on the couch, and because the TV will absolutely never touch the internet I'm using the youtube plugin for Kodi that's running on a LibreELEC box.
(This is your chance to nope out from this post, it's only even more tech-bullshit from here…)
That works pretty great, when it works, but 4K has problems, and the biggest issue is that it requires an API-key, which is the only reason I still have Google account(s), and I'd really like to get rid of those.
So I thought I'd go the yt-dlp route and just download the channels I regularly watch, if I'm going to stream it anyway, might as well, and it's nice to have a finite amount of stuff to watch, more conscious.
There's a project called ytdl-sub that makes it "easy" to subscribe to basically anything yt-dlp supports.
When I say ✌️ easy ✌️ I mean you have to configure everything in some yaml files with their own custom syntax, presets that have presets that have presets, and somehow their own custom scripting language.
I got that working after ignoring most of it and writing my vastly simpler presets by hand, at which point I really could have just used bare yt-dlp…
And then Google decided to flag one of my IPs (thankfully only IPv6), so I spent two days getting a pot-provider (yes…) plugin running, which requires a typescript server running via deno (all new to me), it all works now, but aaahhh :Blobhaj_Blanket:
I'm going to subscribe to nebula tomorrow…
