26, he/they, #pianist and #composer. Expect relatively few posts about that, though, and many more about #accessibility, #languages, #travel, #food because I am more food-oriented than my labrador... And I'm as blind as it gets, for whatever that's worth.

Today on "I can't figure out if this is because this app is probably 80% vibe coded or because Microsoft is Microsoft", Teams has decided that it will begin saying "file deleted" through my screen reader about twice a second while a download is in progress, coming very, very close to giving me a minor heart attack. I feel like it would cause a minor uproar if your screen started endlessly flashing "file deleted" after you clicked download on your company's files, but this is accessibility we're talking about, so it'll probably be like this for a good few months worth of Teams versions and we'll be quietly trusting that we're not actually wiping our company's archives every time we want to grab a file from their Teams. how's everybody's Monday going? Mine feels pretty normal.

I have encountered more image descriptions on Mastodon in 24 hours than I have in Twitter in a couple of years. Seriously. I'm not exaggerating.
As a blind person, this means a lot to me. If you read this and you describe your images, thank you so, so, so much on behalf of all of us. If you don't, now you know you'll be helping random Internet strangers make sense of your posts by typing in a few more words than usual.

@Scott@tweesecake.social Genuinely I cannot think of an app that has made me want to commit horrible crimes more times a second than Teams. With regularity. Depending on it for work is another kind of torture. I'm constantly dreading the moment where some part of it becomes completely unusable and I have to be like "hey, sorry guys, can't work without help for a few months"

Silly me! Silly me for thinking that subscribing to a newsletter for a store with rotating stock which I enjoy visiting would yield useful information. Silly me, stupid, clueless me, for thinking that the newsletter would contain something other than "link image see more", "link image see more" and "link image see more".

This is, of course, not because the newsletter contains no text, or because the only text it contains is "see more". it's because this is 2026, and everything has to be an image. Text has to be in an image. Even images have to be images nowadays. Go figure.

But hey, at least we have OCR, at least screenreaders are doing a little bit to make this whole situation less hellish. At least, and hear me out because this is going to make some people very angry, we have AI. At least we can use a combination of all of these tools to counter the carelessness and laziness and exclusionary practices (intentional or not) of those tasked and paid to disseminate information.

"Today we are very proud to announce that the United Nations has switched from Google Forms to CryptPad Form for collecting endorsements on the UN Open Source Principles: " Welp, guess blind people are left out of that too! If CryptPad Forms is about as accessible as their documents, sheets and presentation editors, we're well and truly fucked. But it's like, great. And open-source. And respectful and encrypted. And good. Just plain good. Accessibility just, isn't one of its features. Oh well.

Windows is the kind of OS that will forcibly push an unwanted 10+GB update up your urethra, take 5 minutes to install it on startup while confidently showing you a "You're 100% there" banner for 3 of those minutes, and then forcibly open Edge (ignoring your default browser settings) to a latest features page.

"Look, we just snuck up to you while you were asleep and force-fed you 50mg of THC, which like, you were fine before and you didn't want them, but doesn't it feel great? Doesn't it? DOES IT NOT?"

In other Thursday morning news, VoiceOver has decided that it will sometimes read * at the beginning of a line as "star" and sometimes as "asterisk". This might have something to do with VoiceOver's language switching or it might have something to do with VoiceOver sending stuff to Eloquence weirdly. Thank god VoiceOver is so transparent with its internals and respectful to its users and will let me diagnose this without much hassle. Ahahahahahah funny joke. It's okay though, because this is one step from all of our synthesisers being replaced with AI voices whose text-to-phoneme rules are governed by the designs of divine providence alone.

@Scott @FreakyFwoof @ToniBarth I have absolutely no desire or need to defend Meta, but in the last few days they seem to have started addressing the stupid quoted message behaviour in the best way possible (now reads "replying to [person], message, quoted message: [content]"). I don't necessarily have faith in them, I really don't, but Drew not being there doesn't automatically fill me with dread juuuust yet. I am preparing to eat my words in a week or two.

Any blind Joplin users around? I'm trying to figure out whether this is just the least unpleasant to use out of the unpleasant to use notetaking apps or whether there's actually a reason to properly like it. So far I find the focus on the Mac app to be quite unreliable when moving around the note list, the editor on the iOS app seems to have terrible navigation around the text with VoiceOver...

@CanisMajoris@mastodon.social There's no right or wrong way to do it really. It's all dependent on context. If you want people to absorb every detail, write detailed descriptions. If the point of the image in the context of the toot can be made clear with a concise one-liner, that's completely fine as well.

@Saidhbhin@mastodon.ie Hmm, that's a tricky one. If you're going to describe in multiple languages, maybe make it known in the second language that it will follow after the first, if that makes sense. Otherwise we can just use a machine translator :)

@john@sauropods.win That one's a little tricky. As a musician, I agree with you entirely–I don't know if I would be able to describe Beethoven's 3rd piano concerto in a way that would make sense to someone who cannot hear, and I don't know that there would be a point. I'm not sure that everyone agrees with that point of view.

@Peg_Erman@mastodon.ie It can be embedded into the image. Your client should give you an option to do it as soon as you add media. Each one does it differently.

@AgnesHenri@social.sciences.re I think thre's no systematically correct way to do it. In fact you hit the nail on the head, I'm of the opinion that you should describe what is relevant to you and to the understanding of the post. If only one part of the image is going to make a difference, describe that one part. If you are posting it purely for aesthetics, maybe you can get a little bit more into detail. Does that make sense?

@GeoffreyGevalt@mastodon.social We use a program called a screenreader, which converts whatever is on the screen to combinations of sound, speech and Braille, depending on user preference. Text is completely fine. :)

@efi@chitter.xyz There's no way to directly affect most screenreaders universally. Most of the time we just want our text read concisely and as is. I can definitely try to help you set up some accessibility software for testing, though it's likely that your OS has some built in.

@ivan_soto@dragonscave.space Oh hey, thanks! This works pretty damn well. Would you consider adding the card's own volume control/some other way to slightly boost the volume? I feel like it's a bit softer than every other synth, which is also the case with the NVDA add-on before touching the volume control
