VC means that business need to make money so they can increase their return on investment. More often than not by generating a fake "need" and marketing it heavily so everyone decides they need the thing they didn't know they needed and were happy without previously.
Someone that bootstrapped their business (so, self-funded or small investments to get going from friends etc) usually means they have a business that is solving a real problem for clients (by providing a service or product that clients actually need), and the money they earn from that pays their bills.
