checking out the internet. might be a fad, might be a thing.

header image: a photo of the sea, somewhere on earth. there's a bit of beach angling from mid bottom to low left. then a bay, and coming in from the left, some hills slope down to meet the sea. the sky is vaguely bluish gray, with a sun casting rays through particulates in the air. it reflects across the waves, which are low.

pfp: a pair of sunglasses on a car dash at night. the frames, which are translucent, are lit up orange-y red from a stop light and the lights of other cars. the lenses are dramatically contrasted and very dark.

Another banger from @pluralistic@mamot.fr "The best argument for this ("rights for robots") is that every time we extend rights to the nonhuman world, we end up treating each other better. Movements to extend moral consideration to animals raised uncomfortable questions about the treatment of humans: slaves, workers, poor people, women, children. The Rights for Nature movement, which seeks to extend legal and moral personhood to watersheds and forests, has been key to winning legal and moral victories to protect the environment, and thus the animals and people who depend on it. But while extending rights to natural things produces positive spillovers for human thriving and rights, the opposite happened when we extended personhood to artificial constructs. Corporate personhood has been a catastrophe for human thriving..." https://pluralistic.net/2026/07/10/posthuman-as-in-no-humans/

@JessTheUnstill@infosec.exchange @ainmosni@social.ainmosni.eu For sure. There's a lot of unexamined symbolism out there. Fourth of July has way more flags than I'd like, but I don't worry too much about my city flying them, or my neighbors if I know them. Depending how well, I might chat with them about it at some point. We all have our blind spots and things we don't consider how it'll make others feel! Hopefully, one good potential outcome of this time is that people will find out that a flag can imply a lot more than they thought!

@danlyke@researchbuzz.masto.host I run Linux at home, so far Fedora is still doing OK for daily driving, but I'm a tad concerned that AI code will start introducing more bugs and I'll have to find another distro. My work PC is an absolute nightmare. It's slow as hell, updates are broken, things that worked fine for years suddenly don't, I just don't get it.

@gwynnion@mastodon.social "Any lifelong Republican should shut the hell up, go away, and never talk politics again because they've been wrong their entire lives and they have nothing of value to add." Honestly, conservatism is just acting like a pathetic child but actually being able to act on it. Their understanding of the world is incredibly stunted at best, and completely incorrect at worst. They don't understand complex societies, interactions, and people. It's a surface-level understanding of literally everything, and they should not be allowed to vote. On top of that, it's impossible to be a conservative and a good person. They think their private singular acts of charity make them good, while voting to strip many of their rights, kill plenty of others (and boy is this one in particular hard to take on, as an American in a shitty American political system), and in general harm anyone who isn't in their "friend" group.

@ana@starlite.rodeo One benefit I really enjoy is the ability to browse albums and movies in a way that doesn't feel as "discoverable" on streaming (even if it's my hosted streaming). I can flip through a book or shelf of CDs, see what hits the spot, rather than having to know a genre or something. It's tactile and I appreciate that for me.

@xgranade@wandering.shop I get that experience counts! But so does ability to function, as you well articulate. I've also dreamed of some sort of system that grants more votes based on some combination of experience and expected remaining life. I know that functionally it'd be nigh impossible to implement, but I would love to see it. Those with a longer stake in the world should impact it more!

@JessTheUnstill@infosec.exchange I hate that it can be good at natural language search. We spent a lot of time getting good at internet search, and this works, but it really needs to return a list of sources rather than explain it because that's where hallucinations cause problems. I expect many people just trust it because it's right *enough* of the time, and yeah...

It's made by, and supports, the most unethical and immoral people out there. It is not possible to use AI ethically.

@xgranade@wandering.shop We have to have some sort of term limits across positions. This is crazy time. But there are so many benefits in the house and senate so they stay, and some of them die in office! WTAF. There should be a Thank You For Your Service thing that you get after X terms of Y years above a certain level, and then you are out. We have a government by and for the people who won't be alive in 10 years. This is insanity.
