Apparently, #Google has lost track of their goal for #Android "We wanted to make sure that there was no central point of failure, where one industry player could restrict or control the innovations of any other. Hey #Google, cool you're adding a bit of #BinaryTransparency. Unfortunately, it doesn't mean much without #FreeSoftware #OpenSource and #ReproducibleBuilds. When can we expect you to adopt those practices?

https://blog.google/security/bringing-binary-transparency-to-the-android-ecosystem/

For the record #FDroid has offered binary transparency since 2017 https://gitlab.com/fdroid/fdroidserver/-/merge_requests/226

And we even offer binary transparency for your #Gradle and #AndroidSDK binaries
https://f-droid.org/2021/02/05/apis-for-all-the-things.html#binary-transparency-logs

How about expanding your logging to all your binaries?

This #PlayIntegrity stuff is really questionable. My banking app won't run on a #GoogleFree #LineageOS running #Android 16 with all the latest security updates. But a #GooglePlay device running Android 10 that was last updated in 2021 is approved. This is not a real #security check. This looks like a #gatekeeper #monopoly check.

@mro@digitalcourage.social I agree, highlighting the role of the signing key seems key. An app signing key is in effect a pseudonym. The hard part is that there is that there is no concrete way for users to verify what the key management practices of the developer are. Judging that from the outside means looking for any signs that the signing key was misused. If a dev wants to hide misuse of their signing key, that is pretty easy to do. For example, they could sign malware and only ship that to targeted users

@jexner@tooting.ch Can the human be anonymous while the "dev" is public? Clearly, we want the apps we use to be maintained by entities that we can trust. Are given names required for that? I think clearly not. For example, non-profits. People trust #EFF as an entity, even without knowing who everyone works there is, and whether the staff changes. So the entity can be trusted separately from human participants. I think developers are similar. Many trusted FOSS contributors operate under pseudonyms

@indigotime@privacysafe.social That's a link to the source code for the source.android.com website, specifically the "jb-dev" branch which was last updated in 2012. Nice idea to look at the source code, here you can see the actual commit where they removed the "philosophy" in 2014: https://android.googlesource.com/platform/docs/source.android.com/+/a336f0618e187b37297f53f385818cd4bc66e7fc%5E%21/#F0

@lehtimaeki@snapp.social At this point, Thunderbird is maintained by a tiny team for the size of the project. And it seems really hard to maintain FOSS email clients these days, since there aren't really any better options, although many have tried. I hope some digital sovereignty money flows towards desktop email clients in a big way. We need them to reclaim email from Google, and it isn't _that_ hard.

@mro@digitalcourage.social if the signing key is the root of trust in the developer, then it is important to know that the developer understands that and takes it seriously, and doesn't just give away the keys to the root of trust.

I wonder if the way the #US and #Israel are leading the #IranWar has something to do with too much reliance on "yes men" #AI setup. There is all the news about #Anthropic #Claude being essential to their #defense planning. It seems they are moving tactically fast, killing key leaders, bombing so many things. But it looks strategically stupid. They are surprised that #Hormuz is closed. #Gulf states' bubble of perceived safety has popped, etc.

@Luanti@floss.social Hey 👋 I'm a long time supporter of the project. I'm with F-Droid and in that context, we're putting together a funding proposal and we'd like to include Luanti, if there are contributors who are interested. Please get in touch! My matrix account is best, otherwise email or here on Mastodon.

We want to add the official #Tor onion service for f-droid.org as an official mirror, so that clients will automatically use it. Please test by sharing the repo link to #FDroid client then add it as a mirror:
https://gitlab.com/fdroid/admin/-/issues/12#note_1184095205

This should prompt to add it as a mirror, which is safe since the keys need to match. Click cancel if it offers to add a new repo.

@tarakiyee@mastodon.online @sovtechfund@mastodon.social Really great news! I hope this means that more places in the world can have their mapping freed. OSM is widely adopted in #Austria and local government data is synced with OSM. The OSM maps are clearly more accurate than #GoogleMaps. When properly supported, the OSM model works better than proprietary, company-owned mapping.

@newstik@social.heise.de @noname@social.tchncs.de @Mer__edith@mastodon.world Signal actually already decided to support Google-free devices, the problem is their implementation. Signal provides direct download links and does not require Play Services. Using #UnifiedPush would be a big improvement in what they already support. So we should focus on real world solutions that exist right now: keep Google push for those with Play Services, and use an existing FOSS solution for those without.

I'm already in over my head (but enjoying it!) So I can't do more. If people make contributions, we can find time to review and give input. Any ideas on where to coordinate this? I'm partial to the F-Droid https://f-droid.org/about/#contact Otherwise, donations do directly support this work: https://f-droid.org/donate/ #DigitalMarketsAct #DMA

@esplovago @fdroidorg If you would like to see an f-droid.org mirror in Italy, then you can help! One approach is to find a well known mirror for Debian, Ubuntu, etc and ask them to also mirror f-droid.org. You can point them to our docs about how to get setup. Then to coordinate with F-Droid, open an issue in https://gitlab.com/fdroid/admin/-/work_items/

@accrescent I'm curious about how you plan to do this: "We also plan to continue allowing developers to submit apps to Accrescent without registering their apps through Android developer verification" From what we've seen, those apps would not be installable on Android, but only AOSP ROMs that remove the new restrictions. Did Google provide anything concrete that lets Accrescent install "unverified" apps on Android devices? We've only heard vague promises.

The #US military industrial complex is not even being intelligent about this war in #Iran. They are stuck in a bubble thinking that their overwhelming air power can do anything. This war has been in the making for years, so they had plenty of time to think about it.

"Iran has demonstrated it can escalate the costs of the war for #Washington far beyond its military capabilities to meaningfully counter the US-Israeli attack directly.

@jxf@mastodon.social oh my god, sadly so accurate in so many cases. It turns out that grumpy stubborn people are the ones willing to keep on slogging to keep the thing alive, which also contributes to the grumpiness. This brings to mind the tension between the #volunteer-driven nature so many great #FreeSoftware projects, and the need to earn a living in order to do a good job of maintenance. This is a key point where projects should be funded by orgs like Linux Foundation, OTF, https://sovereigntechfund.de etc

The #EpicVsGoogle settlement has shifted to apply globally while watering down the terms. This is worse for #US users without providing much in exchange. Why would #Google accept global scope? Because it is clear that #DigitalMarketsAct and laws like force them to open up anyway, so Google doesn't lose by agreeing to global applicability. In exchange, Google gains weakened terms in the US, which is not pursuing something like the DMA

@network_is_reliable@mastodon.social @fdroidorg@floss.social we're working on that right now. The hard part is that the only way to prove that something is reproducible is to actually run the build yourself. Other than that, you just have to trust someone else to run it. So we need to understand how users think about this trust relationship in order to properly represent reproducible builds. It would be trivial to just put "✅ reproduced" in the UI. But what are users' expectation behind that? Any ideas?

A concrete example of how #AI saves #money for #PayPal: I have an old account with 150€. I want to get the money out but its locked. AI says I need to do more verification to prove I'm me. There are five pieces of info I had to provide. After months, four were marked verified. The fifth fails every time I try. Only #ChatBot support is available, which just points to me to docs. So they'll just keep my money knowing I won't sue over so little money. AI makes locking accounts like mine cheap.

When designing #secure systems, understanding how people fit into the user experience is essential. Technical measures are only one part of the system. Without understanding the audience and their expectations, #security problems will surely arise. The more #mainstream the audience, the more important the #UX becomes in providing actual security. Security is a not a goal for users.
