I first came across Steven Novella about 25 years ago. Great to finally be able to see him talk in person at the NZ Skeptics conference in Christchurch

mastodon 4.5.18I'm a Solutions Engineer but what I really do is fiddle with Linux. I'm a Pākehā whose interests include craft beer, black cats, skepticism, classical guitar, mandolin, metal (particularly symphonic and NDH), sci-fi, languages, and open source (although I don't contribute nearly as much as I should :( ). I don't care which pronouns you use but he/him would be the typical choice
You're welcome to follow me but unless we've met I'm unlikely to follow back

@kawaiicon I felt a great disturbance in the force. As if a thousand hungover nerds just remembered what time in the morning KawaiiCon starts

@nazgul@infosec.exchange @emilymbender@dair-community.social once a person i worked with reported a bug in a library to a company and they were initially 'oh yes, we'll look into this' but eventually came back with 'it's not a bug. it's a consequence of the way it was written'.
i've gotten a lot of mileage from that response...

So for this particular case what I think had happened is that for the problem the library said it solved they had taken a particular approach.
When we sent in our report at first they looked at it and thought 'yes, this doesn't look like correct behaviour', but when they looked at their approach in more depth they realised that actually their code was working exactly as designed, but the algorithm they used couldn't work for our particular input.
Just my reckons!
