The conditions’ health and financial burden still strongly outweighs the funding. “It’s not a priority, despite having a major destructive influence on our society,” says Chris Ponting, a geneticist at the University of Edinburgh, UK.
The personal cost for telling the truth when people were actually concerned about covid was immediate and lasting. I was tagged in threads alongside senior immunologists who dismissed the ideas outright, accused (implicitly or explicitly) of fearmongering or misinterpreting preliminary data. These characterizations spread quickly on social media, embedding themselves in timelines and memories. People lied about me. Zeynep and Jeremy Kamil said that I had paid for my own PhD, when it was actually paid directly by the National Cancer Institute for my discovery of a linked mechanism of T cell death and differentiation. Years later, a search of my name still surfaces echoes of those accusations, unaccompanied by context or correction. Professional relationships cooled; invitations to collaborate quietly dried up. I lost a fellowship offer at the National Cancer Institute as Tom Misteli, the head of NCI research, wrote how, "I needed to learn what I can and can not say." The energy spent defending basic mechanistic possibilities was energy not spent on research or clinical work. It was isolating, and it was unnecessary.
[...] I continued to watch the literature. The signals did not vanish: persistent T-cell alterations, exhausted phenotypes, subtle shifts in innate compartments. These were not the province of fringe voices; they appeared in mainstream journals, yet the narrative remained that mild infection was immunologically inconsequential for most. The possibility that repeated or even single mild infections could erode immune resilience was treated as speculative at best, irresponsible at worst. I paid a price for insisting otherwise, not in fame or notoriety, but in the quieter currency of reputation and peace of mind.
[...] The absence of reckoning is striking. Those who confidently declared “no phenotype” now entertain the same hypothesis without reference to prior denial. No correction, no apology, no credit to those who endured the backlash. This is not personal grievance alone; it reflects a broader pattern in science where consensus resists challenge until the evidence becomes overwhelming, then absorbs the insight as if it were always obvious. History is replete with such examples (Semmelweis, Warren and Marshall), yet we seem incapable of learning the lesson.
And they just…took it. They took the best work of my mind and used it to build the very thing that is actively ruining just about everything all the time. They took the books I wrote for children and used them to make it possible for children to not bother with reading ever again. They took the books I wrote about love to create chatbots that isolate people and prevent them from finding human love in the real world, that make it difficult for them to even stand real love, which is not always agreeable, not always positive, not always focused on end-user engagement. They took the books I wrote about hope and glitter in the face of despair and oppression and used it to make a Despair-and-Oppression generator.

The regulatory failure is staggering. OSHA requires employers to provide bathrooms and handwashing facilities. The Field Sanitation Standards have existed since 1987. They require toilets, handwashing stations, and clean drinking water for handwashing. But enforcement is a joke. Farmworkers are excluded from most labor protections. They’re disproportionately immigrant, disproportionately undocumented, and disproportionately afraid to complain because complaining means getting fired or reported to ICE.
And then there’s the labor contractor layer. Many farmworkers don’t work directly for farms. They work for labor contractors who have even less incentive to provide facilities. The contractor can claim they don’t employ the workers. The farm can claim they don’t control the working conditions. Everyone points fingers. Nobody provides a toilet.

Most trans people, everywhere they go, have to be the outnumbered loser who cares about the anti-trans movement, and who notices how that movement lodges itself in “safe” territory, in order to make calling it out look crazy and unreasonable. The most powerful thing you can do in this situation doesn’t concern your attachments, or even your beliefs. It’s giving up on the idea that there is such a thing as safe territory. A kid’s book, a magic wand, even the idea of joy itself can be a tool used to club a kid back into the closet. Act accordingly.
Even when the CDC indicates that a state has "Very Low" COVlD levels, it is important to note that there are sometimes still hotspots. The CDC uses the state's median (middle value). If 51% of wastewater sites are "Very Low," the whole state will use that category.

Are the cold and karmic swords of Saturn
I am all that you need
Wandering underneath
You will vow to me
All your secrecy
I am what you crave
I am your husk depraved
I am what you pray for
And lie for and lay for
I am coming through you
Winding up the seams
I am slipping through to
Places 'fore you see
I am all of this disease
I am all of this disease
I am all of this disease
I am all of this
I am all of your greatest nightmares come true
Everything wrong with the world
And everything wrong with youI am the oil spill

The ugly truth and the bitter pill
It's not gonna be okay
Climate change functions here as a shift in the background forcing under which every one of these coupled systems operates. It changes probability distributions. It increases covariance across domains that used to fail independently of each other. It erodes slack. Failures that once arrived one at a time synchronize. A local shock that would previously have stayed local propagates into cascade. The literature on this is explicit — for example Brovkin et al. (2021) and Lawrence et al. (2020) — but the grammar is what matters. Climate drives. It loads the dice. It does not cause in the billiard-ball sense we prefer for storytelling.
