Solar Farms Are Having An Unexpected Effect On The Environment "Researchers with the Argonne National Laboratory and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (via IOPScience) [...] found that retired agricultural land can produce power while native plants thrive under and around the panels. They quickly saw an increase in the abundance and diversity of native plants and insects, especially pollinators. Shoppers are already using AI to sort through and compare products before they buy, and now, retailers are looking to adopt autonomous payments. But those involved in processing payments will need to first sort out what happens when AI makes mistakes and take steps to keep bad actors out.

@hamishb@mstdn.ca you have hit on another issue: what happens in the morning. Before COVID the morning rush was chaotic with packed buses and trains. Having to leave early to account for missing packed buses was normal.

Replying to
@ChrisInToots@thecanadian.social trying to convince people to spend more time and money downtown when most have had a long day just seems to be a losing proposition, not to mention a blatant money grab. The whole point of return to work is not to improve services but to put money in the pockets of downtown businesses and commercial property owners.

Venues have unwittingly let extremist groups book events. Anti-racism groups offer tips to prevent that | CBC News

Dominion Society, which supports deporting immigrants en masse, is advertising a conference in Hamilton this month. It's prompted anti-racism groups to advise venues and businesses on how to avoid unwittingly booking events by groups they say promote hate, an issue that's come up in other parts of the country.

Why Pope Leo has excommunicated a group of conservative Catholics "The decision by Pope Leo XIV to excommunicate members of the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) is the latest twist in a long-running saga between the Vatican and this contentious traditionalist group. It is yet more evidence of the deep polarisation between conservatives and progressives within the Catholic church." @mpjgregoire@cosocial.ca I get the impression from the industry responses that this is a hard No for most. Both the cheaper power and the cost to move production would just not make it worthwhile.

Last week, city council unanimously passed a $29-million transportation plan, with the goal of making it easier for everyone to get around now that public servants are back in the office an extra day each week. [...] It ... includes launching a communications strategy that focuses on downtown Ottawa, with the goal of getting workers and visitors to "extend their time in the area in order to spread the egress from downtown over a longer period." The City of Ottawa's new transportation plan includes a communications campaign that aims to get workers to spend more time downtown and spread out when they head home for the day. It comes amid new pressures on the transit network, with federal public servants back in the office four days a week.

Been mostly offline today enjoying my 28th wedding anniversary. Art gallery visit followed by fresh strawberries and wild blueberries. Nice way to spend the day with my spouse.
