@25kV seen above the urinal in the men's room at a semi-rural airfield: "Pilots with short props and low pressure, taxi forward"

@clever_reports your reports are one of the best parts of my Mastodon scroll

@VanessaK hard agree. Buy Pratchett wherever you find him!

@VanessaK what a legend

@WataruTenkawa_1 I think it changes all through life. While they're small, having children is probably the hardest thing I've ever done. A few years later, I can see how I might someday think of it as the greatest.

@totalclaireity@toot.lgbt I always find it's easiest to ask the person wanting to connect (person's A and C), if you can send their phone number to B. They should be totally ok with this, and it means person B gets to make the choice. It also reduces the amount of postman work you have to do in the process.

@johncarlosbaez@mathstodon.xyz very interesting! I know almost nothing about this subject... I've been given to believe that e.g. steel has a crystal like structure, and what you do when you harden it (heat to x °C, then quench) - is that you're making that crystal structure more organized... Hence both the hardness, and the brittleness. Now that you've explained this, I realize that I've always thought of metal interior structure as a quasi crystal, and that that is probably wrong.

@dpreacher@freeradical.zone it's meant to cover specific expenses. So I do a per item estimate. As soon as you buy a car, you can predict an annual service, changing the tires after 5 years (or sooner if you drive a lot). And you can estimate the price. Just remember to adjust it for inflation, every year!

@nlowell@indieauthors.social I fell into the trap of becoming a connoisseur. You know - that guy that can spot the smallest mistake in rhythm or interpretation. It ruined classical music for me, probably for ever (it's been 20 years, I'm still recovering). More popular music is still enjoyable at times, but I find it hard to get into it in the way you describe. My best success has been to go to the opposites: punk rock, Goa trance, Metallica. There is beauty and joy to be had.

@ronnietucker@mastodon.art I think here are pdf lessons you can download and use as a book. Videos too! I learned everything I needed in a day or so. https://www.patreon.com/mangojellysolutions?utm_campaign=creatorshare_fan

@gummibunny@mas.to I don't want immortality at that cost. If I could have it at a reasonable cost, I'd learn all the things. Physical skills first: making things, flying/driving every kind of vehicle, all kinds of sports. But also languages, cultures, different kinds of people. I'd probably write stories, too.

@MLE_online @bhtooefr I mean. This would work. And be awesome.

@simontatham @poleguy this is the way

@junglegeorge@mastodon.africa ha. We must be about the same age, then!

@GoldenRetrieverGF I'm in stitches! You people are hilarious

@Daojoan "The Strive has narrative tension. Will they raise the round? Will the product launch? Will they make it?" It's like the hunger games!

@carnage4life :facepalm:

@BrunoLevy01@fosstodon.org @johncarlosbaez@mathstodon.xyz this looks like an interesting book! I'm going to see if I can get hold of a copy. Thanks!

@dpreacher@freeradical.zone I have a "rare expenses" spreadsheet that lists the things I've found trip me up. Replacing car tires every ~5 years, for example. Also replacing the mattress, my prescription glasses, etc. The spreadsheet breaks it all down to how much I should put away monthly, to cover the expense when it comes up. I have a recurring transfer set up that moves that much money into a savings account. Since doing this, there have been far fewer stressful financial events.

@dpreacher@freeradical.zone if the balance builds up too much (yes, it's that subjective), then I either pull a future expense forward (we can do the bathroom remodel early), or just do something else useful (buy a power tool, whatever). It's never a problem. Also, the whole thing is deliberate enough that I find my natural impulsivity isn't a problem either.

@mikro2nd@indieweb.social No, because this would make far too much sense!

@mikro2nd@indieweb.social how'd things go with the rainstorm? I hear about lots of damage along the coast

@SecureOwl@infosec.exchange yikes!

@SecureOwl@infosec.exchange do you write books? If much of your writing is like this, I'm buying whatever you have on the shelves. This is excellent.

@skeletor@mas.to why make this into a cupful of hate to pour out? You know that hate just leads to more pain, right?

@publius@mastodon.sdf.org wait, really? I've been considering switching from i3 to sway. The real reason for changing anything at all, is that when I set up this system 5 years ago I just took the archinstall defaults... Including btrfs instead of ext4. It works, but needs more maintenance than I want to give it. Also... Not sure it's great for performance on a desktop system. Anyway, thanks for helping me rubber duck this.. I know what to do now :-) (Switch to ext4 but keep i3. It works, don't mess with it.)

@grimalkina@mastodon.social oh this is so good. It's a fundamental tension, isn't it? And... "fractal", I think is the word. An individual has the same tension in their life (do I spend time mastering/exploring or performing/exploiting). Look I guess we need both. I really like casting it as an orientation, though! "All things being tolerably equal, I'd rather have us* work on mastery." *Self, family, team, company

@estherderby@mstdn.social I reckon one of the easiest ways to develop empathy, is to read good fiction. Like the work of Nathan Lowell, or Andy Weir or Brandon Sanderson, or... Well, lots of people who really think hard about their characters and their relationships. Terry Pratchett, George RR Martin... What do you think of this approach?

@marick@mstdn.social @Nonya_Bidniss@infosec.exchange er. I'ma long way from there, so excuse my ignorance. Are those masks a nod to KKK hats?
