I live, work and swim in Canada. I am probably enjoying good food or listening to loud music right now. My life is a dance with entropy, sometimes beautiful, sometimes clumsy, always meant to be interesting.

GWAR singing Chappell Roan's Pink Pony Club is worth a watch, even if you're not familiar with either one. Unless you take life seriously.

I made lemon sorbet. The lemons were nice and fresh, but it’s still very sweet. I think I need to reduce the sugar. The next batch will be Ting flavour.

I also remember dancing to Mambo No. 5 that summer. My wife can't stand that song, but it still comes on the radio sometimes and I tap my foot innocuously. It's worse when we're at the mall and we hear Kiss Me by Sixpence None the Richer... do couples still have "our song"? Because that was my song with my last girlfriend before I met my wife. I'm the only one that feels awkward, though, because I never mentioned it. https://open.qobuz.com/track/97535470

I've been thinking a lot about what I would want in a sovereign cloud (e.g. replace iCloud / de-Google). What apps are most important to you, if they were hosted in your country? Please boost for visibility. #sovereign #cloud #degoogle #diday

I'm not a big fan of Celine; she's super talented, but ... her music isn't my favourite. But for some reason, I sometimes enjoy listening to Isabelle Boulay. Maybe it's just where I was in my life at the time. Je t'oublierai, je t'oublierai - Isabelle Boulay, 1998. https://open.qobuz.com/track/80001858

@yora I love the perspective in the book How Minds Change by David McRaney. From the experience of the person who left the flat earth cult, it seems like sometimes "no leader" can be just as domineering because the cult-ural norms are enforced by the true believers as they signal their virtue. Anyway, thank you for sharing.

"The epistemological structure of the conspiracy theory is identical to the structure of spiritual awakening. In both cases, there is a surface reality that most people accept unthinkingly, and a deeper truth accessible only to those willing to question, to seek, to undergo the discomfort of knowing. The content differs. The initiatory logic is the same." https://www.ianbetteridge.com/zen-fascist-wi/

Inspired by @quaap No time to set up the equipment for a critical listen, but some fun #GenreBending. #music 1992 Maggie Reilly - Everytime We Touch. She’s a Scottish singer/song writer. As far as I can tell, this is the original. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTyCLMA90xM 2006 Cascada. They’re a German dance music act. The verse is new, but the chorus is a cover or sample from the original. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Z260ojNQPA 2023 Electric Callboy. They’re also German, sexy as hell, and cover the Cascada version, with over-the-top scenery and choreography. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuBXeF5acqE No Qobuz playlist because the videos are half the fun. I’m watching these again tomorrow while I donate blood. #GiveBlood

Finally, Barbie Sailers. A punk band with both male and female vocalists, from Ticino Switzerland. Still Waiting is not a long song, and not many people have covered it. Still Waiting by Bob Marley and the Wailers is a different song. So is Still Waiting by Prince. I'm Still Waiting by Diana Ross is also different. Here's the playlist: https://open.qobuz.com/playlist/61342679 #GenreBending /fin

Last post of the thread! ERA, a musical project by Eric Levi. I can't describe it, so here's Qobuz: "ERA's music generally combines downtempo electronic beats and lush synths with dramatic Gregorian chanting in a self-designed language similar to Latin and Greek, with no intended meaning." I first listened to this album on a CD at a listening booth in Virgin Records on Champs Elysee. https://open.qobuz.com/album/0004400631572

I learned that older people in France held the resistance and communists in high regard for their efforts to liberate the country during WWII. One of them played the song Heros, by David Bowie. It was meaningful to him, and now it's meaningful to me. It's from 1977. https://open.qobuz.com/track/44644266

The first cover is by Electric Callboy. I'm going to say they defy neat categorization in a genre, but Qobuz suggests "danceable post-hardcore." They rock and they're sexy. And this cover showcases their unique sound. It's fresh, released in summer 2025. They're playing in Vancouver and I'm choosing not to travel to see them. But I'm tempted!

One summer, I watched a bull fight in the Roman arena in Nimes. Barbaric. It was too hot, and there was too much blood and I felt ill. I'm glad I experienced it, but I wouldn't do it again. Francis Cabrel sang La corrida in 1994 and it transports me to that time and place. https://open.qobuz.com/track/12362423

I also bought an album by David Hallyday. I found it while digging through some old boxes, and put it on in the car. I can still sing along with most of the songs. Tu ne m'as pas laisser le temps, 1998: https://open.qobuz.com/track/772963 He's still active, and he recorded a duet with his father, Johnny Hallyday in 2024 called Sang pour sang (blood for blood, homophone of one hundred percent). https://open.qobuz.com/track/265955018

More Jean-Jacques Goldman. I don't know why, but he makes me think of Meatloaf and Brian Adams.

Bonne idée, 1997. I think I bought this album. I still listen to it when I'm feeling nostalgic. https://open.qobuz.com/track/27362

On ira, 1997, from the same album. This is one of my all-time favourite songs. It hits the nostalgia and wanderlust just right. "On ira, on partira toi et moi, ou je nsais pas. Il ny a que les routes qui tremblent, les destinations se resemblent." It gets me every time. https://open.qobuz.com/track/27370

Here's a French-language song that sounds very different: Le Répondeur, Les Colocs, 1998. You will hear a distinct accent, different pronunciation word choice that's different from France. This is a slice of Quebec culture: https://open.qobuz.com/track/33910316

Bonus entry! I just remembered this song, that someone posted recently. It's a banger, and it played everywhere in the summer of 1999. Tomber la chemise, by Zebda. https://open.qobuz.com/track/780686 If you have a favourite from that time, reply! Unless it's the Venga Bus song, I watched it on YouTube a few weeks back and it was stuck in my head for days.
