A fun and useful shell trick: you can, effectively, pipe things from a remote computer into your local clipboard. Context: you're ssh'ed into a remote computer. Locally, you could pipe stuff to xclip or wl-copy or pbcopy to put it in your OS clipboard -- but that won't work in ssh. If your terminal supports OSC 52 (it probably does), here's a way to get that to work over ssh or mosh: cat - | base64 -w0 | { printf '\e]52;c;' ; cat - ; printf '\a' ; } Put that in a shell script, maybe "remote-copy", and then do: cmd-with-output | remote-copy and it appears in your local clipboard. I had to fiddle a bit with tmux, which by default handles that OSC 52 stuff itself and intercepts it. I did set -g set-clipboard on set -ga terminal-overrides ',foot*:Ms=\E]52;%p1%s;%p2%s\a' in my tmux config - I use the "foot" terminal, you'll have to change that suitably. The script needs base64 because in the printf string, if the input has a semicolon, escape byte, null byte, or similar special things, it will mess up printf. Base64 avoids all that. The particular pieces to what's here: \e] says an escape sequence is starting 52 it's sequence 52 ;c; put stuff into the "clipboard" target then there's the payload, and a \a marks the end. #shell #terminal #command_line

Very interesting idea for I-94 in the Twin Cities: make it into a subway!

As someone who lives in between the downtowns, this would be awesome. Covering the I-94 trench would fill in and connect the "south of the interstate" and "north of the interstate" neighborhoods, making it easier to get around this area, and with a stop on Snelling, would make it easy for us to get to either downtown very fast.

It does seem like this is a hopeless dream; I really don't see MnDOT taking this seriously -- but lots of ideas like this seem impossible until they aren't. And the reasoning seems sound: you want underground rail via cut-and-cover -- and we already have the "cut", which makes it cheaper.

I'm not so sure about the article's claim of 16 minutes from downtown to downtown -- that's an average speed around 40 miles per hour, which seems ambitious if you stop, say, twice. But even at 20-25 minutes, that would be nice.

@noneuclideandreamer@mathstodon.xyz ah, so you're working on the diagonals -- and the full function can be described as: ((x XOR y) mod 3) == 0 ? But doing the four possibilities for the bits, isn't that equivalent to NOT XOR? 0 0 -> 1 0 1 -> 0 1 0 -> 0 1 1 -> 1 Did I get my bitwise ops right?

It's paying someone to take out the current flooring and actually do the tiling -- which is expensive enough with a trivial pattern, but here they would have to carefully follow a drawing. I *could* do it myself, maybe, but I am busy and not so skilled, so the resulting floor would probably be pretty wonky.

I was recently thinking of replacing some podcast listening with listening to research papers via text-to-speech. There are generic apps for this, but they are a bit expensive and I would have to get the PDFs out of Zotero and into those apps -- even better is to have that read-aloud feature right in Zotero. Oh my I'm looking forward to this on my phone.

@aerynv2@tenforward.social those questions seem pretty natural to me, but perhaps that's just my own perspective, living in a blue metro (and not just any blue metro area -- the one targeted by Operation Metro Surge) and working at a very woke liberal arts college. You mention Kant and Bentham, and I know a tiny, tiny bit about their philosophies, but I have already decided that one component of the course needs to be "so, what is ethics, anyway? What does it mean to be ethical when doing software design?" And so we're going to have to get our hands dirty with reading actual philosophers. ...and I'm a bit out of my depth there. But I have until spring semester to work something out. Suggestions welcome...!

@RuchiraSDatta@mathstodon.xyz excellent point -- it shows there's more layers/dimensions to the ethical considerations than you might think. Consider some bit of software that fairly and genuinely promotes human flourishing -- but comes at a staggering environmental cost. Compare that with some alternative that is more energy-efficient but is roughly like the worst of rage-bait social media. What should you do? I can easily imagine students disagreeing about this. Now I need to think about other dynamics like this: your design seems very good, very ethical, but there's another angle in which it is harmful.

I'm very excited to be starting a visiting position in the computer science department at St. Olaf College this autumn!

In addition to an introductory programming course ("CS1", as people in CS ed say), I'll be teaching two upper-division courses: Foundations of AI, and Ethics in Software Design. I've never taught either of those, but am very excited about them. Do *you* have any idea of what Kids These Days should know about either of those topics?

I do have the summer free -- I'm open to volunteering, or something temporary. I'm contemplating something that would, in a way, prepare me for teaching both of the courses above: some kind of job labeling AI training data.

@CatherineFlick@mastodon.me.uk also think about how, as cars and trucks get more quiet, the sound of a city will change. We've grown up learning that the natural sound of a busy city is...mostly related to the sound of internal combustion vehicles. Think about what our children's generation will unconsciously think of as the sound of a city -- more "eeeee" sounds from electric vehicles, and also perhaps...more sounds of nature and of people! (There's a rather gross-er example of this: as bars and taverns started to ban indoor smoking, the smell of cigarette smoke in those places went away, and we learned that, in some sense, the "natural smell" of a bar or tavern was...that of urinal cakes! Which I guess is better than the smell of cigarette smoke...)

@guilevi@dragonscave.space I do describe my images, and in my everyday work we take accessibility and screen reader support for our software very seriously. Sometimes when testing, I will start Jaws or NVDA and actually close my eyes and listen to the screen reader. Years ago, one of the "IT guys" in my workplace was blind. One day I visited his office and heard his screen reader. I was amazed at how fast it went. I literally couldn't understand a single thing, it was just so fast. #accessibility

@yoavartzi without reading the article, I am reminded of a similar example in the math research community -- Doron Zeilberger has for many decades given authorship credit to Shalosh B. Ekhad -- basically, his Maple code. Ekhad is even the author of entire books.... https://sites.math.rutgers.edu/~zeilberg/ ...and also check out Ekhad's web page: https://sites.math.rutgers.edu/~zeilberg/ekhad.html As far as "to be an author, you must be a human who can give consent", in the math world there's also Nicolas Bourbaki...who is fictional: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicolas_Bourbaki So, my hot take is: there's lots of prior art (...icles...) with authors that in one way or another aren't regular humans. Listing ChatGPT as a coauthor seems fine to me -- provided it actually contributed!
