Six years after Apple Silicon changed the Mac forever, the original MacBook Air with M1 still has enough power to make a second-hand one surprisingly tempting

Always lovely when devs take note of accessibility concerns. When I was writing about @quicheindustries@mastodon.social Browser for Stuff recently, I found a vestibular trigger. Mentioned it to the dev. Now it’s not only been fixed, but users can opt to use the simpler tabs crossfade without having Reduce Motion on. (If you do have Reduce Motion on, the crossfade animation is enforced.)

Doesn’t say amazing things for the Mac App Store that I find it faster to search for something in a search engine than within the MAS itself. And that’s when I already know the name of what I’m looking for.

I mean, I was irritated enough by rounded window corners when taking screenshots of emulators and having to paint back in ‘missing’ pixels. But in Sequoia, the windows rarely interrupted by work. In macOS 26, the corners are so ludicrously oversized that there is an impact on information provision and density, along with causing distraction in multi-window setups because there are loads of gaps. Plus it also makes the system look like My First Operating System.

RE: https://mastodon.social/@_Davidsmith/116398266142227490 A quick reminder to developers, though: framed shots look cool, but many publications require standard grabs at full-size, and so please include those in your press kits. If you don’t offer any, that reduces coverage opportunities. (Obvs, do both if you like. But don’t just put grabs in a frame, reduce their size, whack them online as JPEGs, and leave it at that.)

@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social Given the tumbleweeds trundling across the Apple TV Games tab, and that not even all Apple Arcade games making it across (including, most absurdly, Retrocade), I can’t imagine an Apple TV for gaming is ever going to happen. Beyond that, I’ve kind of given up hoping things will improve with Apple and gaming. There have been other times when people who really get games were in the mix, but they were always blips. Gaming doesn’t feel entrenched in Apple’s DNA.

@edmn@mastodon.social See, all that does for me is make my eyes dance around the outlines. The most prominent components become the borders and so the sidebar comes forward. The one thing my eyes won’t settle on easily is the actual window content. Honestly, I think Apple got its layering all messed up with this redesign. But sooner or later, we’ll all have no option but to start using it anyway.

@json@micro.sadlerjw.com Yeah. The ‘better’ statement doesn’t really hold up. It’s becoming more capable, but the basic failures are just happening faster and there are more things that can go wrong. Personification is an ongoing problem, and that was clearly intentional by LLM/agent designers. They want you to get sucked in by the perceived ‘humanity’ of something that is a tool. But these things are no more alive than autocorrect. As for Fry, I do also worry about her AI ads if if that colours things.

@JoshHrach@iosdev.space Hard to say. I think if you’ve very obvious local things that won’t easily work across countries, it’s worth at least adding one or two. eg if I made a weather app, I’d make sure I had grabs that showed C and F. But from my standpoint, US-Eng (say) is usually fine even in the UK.

Good grief, the UX for the new financing on Apple’s UK site is a shitshow. It turns out that 0% *is* available for Macs, but the option only finally appears when you are several pages deep into checkout. That seems like… not a good thing. People will see the default and assume 0% isn’t available.

I’ve seen a few takes of late that Liquid Glass is actually Pretty Good Now™, or that upgrade laggards are scared that Apple will merge its operating systems. Most of my devices remain on pre-26 systems because of Liquid Glass. In part, that’s about usability. But mostly, it’s still about accessibility. At best, Liquid Glass is poor, even with accessibility controls turned on. There are so many holes, and it’s clear Apple won’t deal with them, since we’re now on the road to the 27 systems.
