Digging the secret SILO website that’s just appeared (signposted from a weird YouTube video). A reminder of how fun the web can be at building mystery around other media. The last time I fell into something like this was the site that helped make sense of German time travel show Dark. https://howdidwelosethisworld.com

Back from a week working and walking on the edge of Saddleworth. Nothing restores my positivity quite like spending time on the Pennine moors.

One for fellow spoolers: WalkmanLand is a database of all 80s/90s portable cassette players (found via @simplebits@mastodon.social' fine newsletter). My WM-22 still outperforms any modern alternatives and it's lovely to get this much detail. https://walkman.land/sony/wm-22

Here’s part two: serenity at Sakamoto Library, lemonade at Lambert, feeling Karuizawa, and tripping with no clothes on. https://colly.com/journal/return-to-tokyo-part-2

Return to Tokyo, Part 2

Days 6 to 10 brought several trip highlights, including an outstanding café, trippy outdoor bathing in Karuizawa, and a perfect few hours at Sakamoto Library.

And finally, here’s part three. My sincere thanks for the kind comments (online and in person) about this little series; it’s much appreciated. https://colly.com/journal/return-to-tokyo-part-3

Return to Tokyo, Part 3

Days 11 to 15. We celebrated a retirement, caught beans for good fortune, and spent three Perfect Days ticking off favourite places and stores.

For anyone interested… Oxidised contacts were causing crackling when adjusting volume and input selection, often resulting in intermittent stereo with one channel frequently dropping. Had to do a partial breakdown, completely dissemble switches and faders, remove dirt and oxides with DeoxIT D5 and a razor blade, then lubricate with FaderLube F5.

Spent the day re-recording software piano parts on a lovely Yamaha YU-11 in a tiny Harajuku studio — then went record shopping.

Lots of Sakamoto moments on this trip. Watched the Tokyo Melody 4K restoration and also got up close with his Fairlight CMI. The highlight was an afternoon at Sakamoto Library (secret location, strictly no photos). Incredible to quietly read a book that I know he cherished and discover his margin notes and underlines.

@scottboms@typo.social Ah, wonderful — gonna be hot in June. Ping me anytime if you want specific recs or tips. If I don't know something, Geri probably will. (And thanks for reading.) BTW, Geri's tip for you, but I'm sure you know them: https://www.handsawpresstokyo.com

RE: @jonhicks@mastodon.social

I love this so much. Jon's side project is a wonderful example of what it means to really love music and how rewarding it is to be a fan.

@nazhamid@mastodon.social Yeah, I like a good kit shot. The job was frustrating at times, but strangely calming for long stretches. Easy to see how people (usually dusty and downtrodden men of my age) fall into refurbishing old machines for a living.

Happy Setsubun ("seasonal division," the day before spring in the old Japanese calendar). I was half-blind from staring into the sun, but managed to catch a packet of beans, which should help me ward off a few demons.

@damianwalsh@mastodon.social It does take courage — and without a decent video for the exact model you'll likely never succeed with the dozens of "I'd never have worked that out" moments and break things instead. I've had bad experiences with "professional" service and repair people in the past, so I'd rather try myself.

@Luke@typo.social Gorgeous, love a bit of Marantz (from afar, never owned any) and always chrome for me. For reference, this is the video I followed — outstanding stuff, except he never properly showed how to refit the hairline spring to the switch bar and I nearly lost my mind and hate him for that. https://youtu.be/KR3PuaE86Xk?si=eN6GRwzNTTDrwnqq&t=17

@onpaperwings@typo.social I'm not handy at all, never matured into one of those people. But then, there are coffee machines and hifi separates that I love too much, and YouTube makes a home repair believable. I hope one day to find a Prophet-5 in a skip and spend eight years rebuilding it.

@Paulmorriss@mastodon.social His was knackered, the screen totally corroded and pen tool missing. But it had his pencil writing scrawled on it. The new Tokyo Melody restoration only just released here in Japan but find it somewhere if/when you can — Sakamoto demos the Fairlight in detail.

@nazhamid@mastodon.social Yeah, it's a quick first attempt at a dark mode — I just went right through my stylesheet and set light-dark colours for everything. Posting this year's music roundup prompted it; I assume people would rather not be blinded during an evening listening sesh.
