@davidgerard@circumstances.run One of my first jobs was working for Nortel in Harlow, planning a mobile network fibre backbone for Vietnam. It was during the dotcom bubble, so they were a grotesquely rococo organisation that had to resort to interns to do actual work, like implementing Suurbale and Tarjan's disjoint paths algorithm on a secret linux server under a manager's desk, because corporate IT were crap. Anyway, we were building disjoint paths for robustness, and the problem they kept running into was that, as everything was virtualised, "disjoint" paths often ended up on the same fibre, and if not then the same duct, and if not then the same trench, and if not then along the same right of way. Their redundancy kept on being defeated by backhoe blunders. So we worked on hierarchical disjoint paths, so that disjointness could be a question of degree, depending on the value of the circuit. When I left they were considering province-level disjointness in paths for high-value circuits. I sort parcels for a living now.

@davidgerard@circumstances.run I think the intro actually says a lot. He's retired and doesn't really want to do it any more, but doesn't want to let go. I guess he sees AI as a way that he can retain ownership without putting in the extra work that he no longer wants or is incapable of doing. I think that's fair enough. I'm sure everyone reaches that point in their life and struggles with those things, especially someone who has been so lauded. In terms of rsync, I think it reinforces the idea of a fork for someone more hungry and able to work on this. Tbh, I do feel sorry for him for all the dogpiling, despite my selfish frustration at the inconvenience this is causing me personally.

I know Chatsworth well. It would be interesting to see something of the first Duke's pre-romantic scheme in evidence in a little corner of the place, just for curiosity and imagination's sake.

@raynerlucas@mastodon.social @davidgerard@circumstances.run It's interesting how much stuff about optimising threads, throughput, etc with local caches, coherency, queues, semaphores, etc, is reflected on the warehouse floor. I sometimes wonder how much of this old school, I suppose it's Operations Research, was reinvented or has a common origin. But it's really nice at the end of the day having done a thing that has realised value per se (like getting a thousand Mother's Day flower parcels off around Scotland), rather than doing something that relies on reputation /identity/ presence-in-a-social-space or future visions and dreams of rich/influential folk. Like "That is done: I did that thing and it is good, independent of me. And if I hadn't done it, someone else would have to".

@TheEntity@social.treehouse.systems @davidgerard@circumstances.run I mean, it's a guess from what he wrote. I don't want to lay into the guy. I'm just trying to make sense of what's going on. The stuff he writes about being flooded, huge amounts of work, being retired, "yeah, I’m OLD", wanting someone-or-something else to do the "grunt work", how everything's changed, how his expertise is out of date: I'm not an expert in the circles he moves in, but looking at it in terms of sentiment and intuiting emotions, that's is definitely what I'd take away from that single piece of writing. If that's right, I think a more healthy or humane thing to do would be to take on a protégé. Maybe I'm barking up completely the wrong tree. It has been known!

@davidgerard@circumstances.run Reminds me of when politicians say something is a "complex issue" to avoid talking about it. Sure things are often complex issues, but they can usually be summarized, and coming out of a politician's mouth it means "I don't want to talk about it" (other than in a "national conversation" which is government-speak for paying a retired judge to waste a lot of money before telling you you were right).

This story about the police leaving a bag containing weapons outside the Mayor of London's house is bizarre. It had a f@cking sub-machine gun in it.

Now, I'm not a police officer, so don't deal with this stuff every day, but surely at some point when you get into the car and check you've got your radio, your lunchbox, your high-viz, your helmet, you think "Wait, didn't I have sub-machine gun earlier?"

Is only one to retrieve food from class extra snack cupboard at end of trip.

Teacher tells kid they were about to throw it all out, no one else had remembered.

Kid comes home with whole class's snack stash.

@lothcat It's odd how very rich people seem often to be thinking about money all the time, and worrying about it, and having to step out of things to deal with it., and having opinions on it. It seems weirdly like being poor. I think there must be a sweet-spot somewhere. Being rich should mean not having to think about money because you've enough.

When you see someone you love peacefully sleeping it can be difficult to think of your own consciousness as anything but a curse.

Like, all a body wants is for everything to be nominal. Occasionally, various things deplete, and maintenance or replenishment is required, and an unfortunate state is entered into, akin to defecation, when we must replenish various things which are out of range.

I'm not saying that's true. The mind seriously objects, but it would be the body's Luciferian manifesto, were it to rebel.

That's something we don't admit in ourselves. We see time spent asleep as a necessary waste, or in the service of awareness. But when we see someone peacefully sleeping, everything humming along in range, we feel its value per se, and empathy circumvents our ego's self-deceit.

Snooker has some odd, complex rules. So in this "longest frame ever" I was half expecting a gong to go off after an hour and the ref to pull out jousting lances from under the table, and for the frame to be decided by combat, judged by the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, the Lord Lieutenant of Yorkshire, and the prioress of Kirklees.

If Barry Hearn wants to get in touch, he knows where to find me or, better still, medical attention.

@RolloTreadway@beige.party If anyone phoned me up asking about "if there was a general election tomorrow..." I'd be tempted to ask them "If the moon was made of cheese, would it be Gouda?" Not only would that be poorly advised logistically impossible and illegal (all things that could be removed by hypotheticals) our entire political climate would have been transformed for six weeks beforehand. It's just an incredibly rude question to ask all the hardworking volunteer canvasers, hustings organisers, and door-knockers in political parties. I think that would mean I'd end up in "don't know", 😀

TIL, using book-books (codexes) for important texts was a Christian innovation and was there from the start (it's even mentioned in biblical epistles). Books existed at the time, but were used for things we'd use note books or journals for today, note taking, accounts, etc. Everything important was done on a scroll. But not Christian texts: they were all books right from the start. Translating cultures, it was all basically a series of scribbled-in "notepads" passed around and copied. No one is quite sure why (there are, of course, many theories, or the direction of causation).

My favourite (the one I'm most convinced by) is that it was just aesthetic, functioning as a differentiator and in-group signifier.

Endeavour Ep. 1 there's a doctor near the start who says digoxin is from Deadly Nightshade. I spent the whole episode thinking he was a fake doctor(*), but it turned out it was just the writers not doing their research.

I was caught off-guard because there's a Midsummer Murders episode where someone forages Hemlock Waterdropwort claiming it was parsley and I cursed the writers for being so slapdash, and it turned out that was the plot!

(*) atropine, scopolamine and hycoscyamine are from Belladonna, but digoxin is from foxgloves.

Even a sensor can be okay, as long as it's out the way, and it's clear where the sensor is, y'know, a clear deliberate act. Some loos have this for the flush. I'm sure these ones were designed by an architect given how much it's style over substance, and how architects as a profession hate toilets. It's hard to tell even where the water's going to come out. I'm sure they were very expensive and have won a prize, 😄 .

Picked up an old Taggart DVD at the charity bookcase at Tesco. Whenever I watch the old ones with Mark McManus in, I'm reminded of my old dad's generation, the people he knew, the general way society we moved in was like.

It's really striking, and there's nothing like it elsewhere. It's a world that's still a kind of inscrutable, inaccessible mystery to me, in some way, the more so the longer I was in it.

It's very odd: we're not Scottish, there's no connection to Glasgow at all.

The best thing I can come up with is that maybe there's some kind of commonality to working class Protestantism that Taggart really caught the essence of. There's quite a few clues in each episode that Maryhill CID is Gers not Hoops, but it's hard to put a handle on things like style of dress and mannerisms that work on a subliminal level (though I always assumed Jackie was from the other side of the tracks: who knows why with these things?)

But it has a good type system (including Haskell-like type classes) and handles state-mutation and real-world modification much more cleanly and simply than the monad-like approach of Haskell (or bodges in other languages). The Prolog-like logic-language features are actually not super useful (beyond the usual places they shine, like constraint solving. It's kinda sad in a way they've come to dominate how people see the language.

The red button / blue button conundrum everywhere is symptomatic of something that the trolley problem also suffers from, a kind of ethical blanching.

It doesn't represent any instantiable scenario without the addition of facts which are morally determining in almost every theory.

Usually the exception is the author's favourite theory, where all the elements are present, and everyone else is stupid.

It relies on us going along with this idea that there are kind of ethical atoms, that situations can be reliably and universally boiled down into orthogonal components, which hasn't been shown.

So my final answer is that not only is this a stupid question that I refuse to answer, my refusal to answer is an ethical one.

Not now, Madonna!

I was walking around our mid-refurbishment Tesco thinking about how remarkably many of my friends, colleagues and acquaintances are struggling right now; folk who've not obviously struggled with mental health before, making dark jokes about illness and industrial accidents, taking sudden time off to "catch up with things", asides about meaningless and losing interest, about not needing to save. It seems near universal.

Then Madonna's "The Power of Goodbye" comes on, through the currently somehow incomplete speaker system, echoing and muffled, like The Caretaker's /An Empty Bliss Beyond This World/.

There's nothing left to try / There's no place left to hide /.../ There's nothing left to lose / There's no more heart to bruise // There's no greater power than the power of goodbye.

Something like /Love Shack/ or /Come On Eileen/ might have helped more!
