mastodon 4.7.3

Autistic Welsh NHS emergency care improvement person who believes universal human rights are universal to all humans.
(they/them or he/him)

Music, sandwiches, bit of cricket, a little politics (not too much). Sometimes a bit miserable because things haven't been great, apologies in advance.

I think we all need to try and help others, above all else. Not to prioritise ourselves.

(Profile pic: Buster Keaton sits unhappily in a steamship funnel; header is a glass teapot full of leaves.)

Sky News have calculated that Reform are doing 5% worse across England than they were in the local elections this time last year. Might be a useful way to offset the ludicrous hyperbole that is getting pumped out.

@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org I had a major problem with that film (not a spoiler because it crops up early on). The sheep are terrified of leaving their field and crossing a road. No sheep has EVER been afraid of such things. Sheep love escaping. If the escaping comes with a possibility of death, all the better. Given the opportunity, they will go where they're not supposed to be as often as possible. Anyone who has lived their lives in a sheep farming area has encountered sheep on the road far too many times to count. The writer of this story has clearly never got to know sheep. And that is the tiny hill upon which I shall lay down my life.

@Natasha_Jay@tech.lgbt I often think of these two pictures from Wallsend, taken by Chris Killip six years apart - the first from the time when Swan, Hunter was building those huge tankers, and the second from after the tanker business had left.

@ChrisMayLA6@mastodon.me.uk What I really want to hear from a government - any government - is that it's not just carrots and it's not just sticks. It's removing obstacles for many people who want to work but are prevented from doing so. Such as: healthcare (people who are off sick for a long time generally don't want to be), accessibility (so many disabled people are kept out of the workforce because reasonable adjustments laws are inadequate and the recruitment process is discriminatory), social care (people having to be a part- or full-time carer because state provision is inadequate), costs of accessing education as an adult, poor rural transport, etc etc etc.

@muz4now@mastodon.world It varies enormously, but I'll say an average is probably going to be twenty to thirty. Ish. (Some days it'll be one or two, some days it'll be over a hundred.) And what I always say is: my favourite genre of music is new. I'm obsessed with listening to new things.

@ChrisMayLA6@mastodon.me.uk Oh yes. And for what it's worth, I hope that legislation is passed in due course to this end. A ten minute rule bill can help establish that there would be support for such a thing. So I'm certainly not opposed to it! I'm just confused about how it's being reported, as if members on the opposition benches can just introduce legislation whenever they want. That kind of thing is massively unhelpful.

@davidnjoku@mastodon.world Of those options, it has to be the front room. Putting it in the front room is saying, I did a good thing, I'm proud of it, and I'm right to be proud of it. Putting it in the bog is saying, I'm proud of it but I'm going to pretend I'm not, whilst also imposing it upon others when they're alone in a private situation. Very lacking in class. The classiest approach, however, is to give it to a loved family member, so they can be proud on your behalf.

@davidnjoku@mastodon.world Saying this, I do actually have two medals from work, but I didn't really have to do anything. One was presented by the association of ambulance service CEOs to those who worked through the height of covid; the other was some random thing I got for being employed at the time Chuck became king, and I really have no idea why that exists. They're at the back of the bookcase. Bit embarrassed by them really.

@RickiTarr@beige.party Stuff which might sound better than it was. Let me think now. Monday was nominally spaghetti, but I didn't like it (or rather, I learnt later, I didn't like the rubbish sauce from the supermarket). What did I have instead? Sausages maybe? Tuesday depended on the season. In winter it was bacon and eggs. In summer, it was salad with some kind of cold pie or pasty. Wednesday was pizza, but if you're imagining a nice pizzeria, nope. Supermarket shit again. I didn't eat it. Have no recollection of what I ate instead. Probably some kind of ready meal from the same supermarket. Thursday I think was usually a casserole of some description, probably with mashed potatoes. Haven't got the least idea about Friday. A blank. Saturday, though, Saturday was a chippy tea, which Dad picked up on his way back from the racetrack (he spent his whole life watching motor racing at the nearby circuit). And Sunday was a roast, or when we were a little older, a meal at the pub which might have also been a roast, or a steak, or something like that.
