Last year I grew two turmeric plants. I tried to overwinter one, which is sometimes successful, but it died back completely in the dry indoor air. Out of spoons, I just ignored the pot in my living room. It hadn't been watered since December. I was planning to dump the spent soil and no-doubt decomposed remnants of rhizome. Last Monday I walked past the pot and was stunned to see a sprout. So I watered it, heavily and repeatedly. Today it's 16" tall. #IndoorGardening #TropicalPlants #Gardening

@passwordsarehard4@mastodon.social @mellifluousbox@mastodon.social @steltenpower@social.edu.nl Because a lot of mom-and-pop small business owners don't have a comprehensive business plan or even a comprehensive advertising plan. They come with core skills in the trade, not in running a business. So generally they do the thing they're selling very well, but they don't sell it well. And they don't always have a good understanding of the pros and cons of automated help when they can't afford a human. (Looking in part at myself here.)

@shoq@mastodon.social Most interesting to me, what I'd forgotten of this quote, is how he centers a "manufacturing economy." Just touching real things. Changing the oil in my motorcycle (sorry, ain't lying in the dirt getting used oil on my eyebrows like you have to do with a car, and also sorry I know it's different from assembling it in a factory) connects me to reality and thus to science. Another way Sagan's thinking stood out from stereotypical scientists'.

@frumble@chaos.social @mohs@aachen.social Increasingly, commercial and organizational websites don't work with Firefox. Sometimes it's just funky formatting and I can deal with that, but when the e-commerce part doesn't work at all, I need an alternative. Mostly I'd been going to Safari when Firefox didn't work, but nowadays, a lot of sites don't work with Safari either. I hate it here.

@PizzaDemon@mastodon.online @futurebird@sauropods.win @MarkHoltom@mastodonapp.uk A male runner keeping pace with the female leaders is still a high level elite runner, though not in contention to win the men's division. He'll likely have *trained* with the weight of a hydration vest, the aid of a carer, or both. But *racing* at that level, he wouldn't want the extra weight, and personal staff are likely banned from aid stations. This is all on the organizers.

@greenpeace@mastodon.social I genuinely wonder whether it's better NOT to recycle plastic, since the plastics will ultimately leach into the ground when containment efforts degrade - rather than being released as toxic fumes into the air near human habitations? (It's also my understanding that recycling steel, aluminum, glass and paper *does* conserve a lot of resources and decrease environmental impact, can you confirm?)

@futurebird@sauropods.win @MarkHoltom@mastodonapp.uk Yeah after you said that I went picking through, and it appears that this was such a small race that the results aren't online, at least in English, and I have no Chinese. Otherwise it would be super easy to find his name by his bib number. But the race is still being run, so anybody with Chinese language skills and maybe local contact with race organizers can find him :)
